I changed to the VGA cable and there's no sound. I guess I'm to assume that there's no speaker in the computer. Even the cheapest laptops have speakers.

Now I need to see if I have any speakers around that I can hook up. It works now.

Does anyone know if you have the DVI cable connected does that mean you have to use digital audio?

Desktop computers typically don't have speakers integrated, regardless of what laptops have.

Regarding audio over DVI, I found this, but I don't know if it reflects this computer's integrated graphics (ATI Radeon 4200) and audio. Generally speaking, I don't believe DVI implies support for audio. You may need a separate audio connection to your monitor.

As others have indicated Desktops don't have built-in speakers. With out knowing the make and model of your monitor we are only guessing what connectors it has and its audio capabilities(that is assuming the information can be found online). Check the manual that came with your monitor to see what your options may be.

The system itself has 8 channel 7.1 speaker capability. A quick Google search for "DVI audio to HDMI" indicates there are converter/adapters out there but I know nothing about them. At $200+ for the one I saw(that might work) you could buy a decent 5.1 speaker set. Most monitors only have stereo speakers built into them so it would seem a waste of money to use such a converter. My $25 2.1 speakers work and sound quite well. If I had the space at my desk I would upgrade to 5.1.

DVI is a video interface only and has nothing to do with audio by design. The system does have an electrical S/PDIF connector for audio, but it totally separate from the video.

Your answer may be a simple as running a 3.5mm audio cable from the system to the monitor to get sound to work, but you need to check your manual to see if it is an option.

I haven't owned as many as you have, but I've probably owned a wider variety than you since the early 80's. Several of the early ones did have a single (crappy) speaker in the case.

Pretty much all Apple desktop computers to this day have an internal speaker.

I'll agree that the computer we are buying here does NOT have an internal speaker that we can play music through.

Macs don't count. LOL! My wife being a teacher, we have also had our share of Apples & Macs. You are right, they did have really crappy onboard speakers.
One of my first computers was a Timex/Sinclair, also w/o onboard speakers.

To be fair you did state "desktop computers", Macs sort of fit in there.

The Timex/Sinclair didn't have much of anything onboard, I still have mine packed away somewhere. The Commodore 64 did have an ok speaker for its time, also have it packed away with 2 massive 5 1/4" single sided low density floppy drives and lots of other peripherals.

No, I don't know why I'm keeping this stuff . . .

Power Mac - had a few. Still wish I had my Apple II, Apple III and Sun II workstation among others I owned. There are collectors that will pay a pretty penny for them. Hind sight!

Here's my theory on shipments-

Woot! sold about 1000 more units than HP had on hand. The people who already received their computers got the old abused ones. The rest of us are going to get brand new ones that HP still has to assemble for us.

Just trying to keep a positive outlook on things . . .

Hmmm...not to rain on your parade but you'll be getting the new ones HP rushed through the QC dept. in a factory in China. Based on the number of returns Woot & HP just sold us we have a pretty good idea how well the first QC inspection worked out. Not sure who wins this round.

Mine arrived today too! It looks brand new - not one scratch or dent, nor any dust inside. Mine is the gray one (P6754Y). It has the internal WiFi antenna, a Hitachi 1TB HD, 2 x Micron 2GB PC3-10600 DDR3-1333MHz non-ECC Unbuffered CL9 240-Pin DIMM Single Rank Original Memory Module Mfr P/N MT8JTF25664AZ-1G4, and a Bestec Model ATX-250-12Z-D7R 250 watt power supply among other components.

Now if my new monitor ever arrives, I will even be able to tell you if everything works!

Btw, for those who are interested in obtaining the same memory modules, the least expensive I have found so far is $31.00 each at Anet.com (http://www.8anet.com/ShowProduct.aspx?pid=8817)

Hope everyone gets their orders soon!

I've read in reviews that the internal wifi is not very good. I did an install of a computer (not the same model) for a client a few weeks ago, he had internal, and the router was in the same room and he only had 2 bars...

Also, why is everyone maxing out the ram? you guys doing video editing or something? I have a desktop at the office with 2gb, and runs pretty good on win7 Ultimate. I am thinking 4gb is going to be just fine for most normal use.

I do agree, RAM is cheap though...

Sounds like HP is scrambling to put together enough systems to ship.

I'd say you got a better wi-fi option with the external antenna. Should give you much better reception. I have 2 systems with the external setup and and they have been working fine for 7 months now. Your internal antenna reception will depend on it's location if reference to the router. I would have to guess it would be less then the one with the external antenna. It is hard to tell without antenna specifications and HP hasn't given very much there. The card has the same part number, so I assume(bad thing to do) they are only changing the antenna.

So, some of you might have read my earlier post on page 8. I didn't receive any external antenna and as a result the wireless card was not finding any connections. It had the RED X sign over the bars instead.

Anyways, I contacted HP and they were like, based on the information you've given about your device, you are supposed to have an internal antenna but we have sent you the wrong antenna, so we will now send you the correct internal antenna. I got the new one today with FedEx and it is the exact same internal antenna that was already inside the computer - pictured below

It has the cable connected to this internal card as seen on the picture and then it's connected to this golden part inside the computer which then sticks out to the back of the computer waiting for an external antenna to be attached to. Without an external, this thing doesn't pick up any signals. Am I doing something wrong? I borrowed my neighbor's external antenna and attached it to my computer, I get about 2-3 bars, mostly 2 bars. It is a D-Link antenna. I don't mind going and buying an external antenna off of eBay but wanted to get an opinion as to what to get, so that I can get a stronger reception.

Thanks guys

First, sorry for the large picture. Couldn't find a smaller version and don't have a place to put it right now.

So you have this without the antenna:

I tried to find a part number, but so far no success. I get all 4 bars with this antenna on my system. I don't know why HP can't find one.

I don't have a recommendation right now, but I will take a look and let you know unless someone else beats me to it.

Update: A ZyXEL EXT105 might be a good replacement antenna. There are several vendors including newegg that carry this item. It appears to match the specifications, at least those I can find. I would ask the vendor if it is the correct match before buying it. Hopefully this will give you a starting point. Good luck.

A quick look over at eDealInfo with a search for "1TB external" shows that there have been plenty of $49.99 deals this year (none at the moment), and lots of others <$80. Agree with everything you said, but I've seen 2TB externals there as low as $60, so $80 for a 1TB is no longer any great deal.

You need to send an email to service@woot.com. Include your order number.

A question though, is it physically not there, or is it the system doesn't see it? How could HP run a final test without having a drive in the system?

OK, this is a question for the more involved techies / tech purchasers who might still be reading this thread. For those of use who missed this deal (& it looks like it was one of the better desktop deals Woot has had in a long time), what is the most computer you know of, available online now, for a comparable (~$300) price? How much more can I get if I stretch the budget to $400?

This purchase would not be used at all for gaming, but would be used primarily for remote access / large file transfers & occasional video editing. Also, this computer would be left on 24/7, likely for several years.

So massive 3D video power is thus not required. Plusses for me would be a mobo that is ready for the 6gb SATA, and perhaps USB 3.0 built in (so I don't have to add it with a card later.) Also, Win 7 Pro or Ultimate (for XP compatibility mode) would be worth spending a little more, if I could upgrade to that for not a lot.

I've been keeping my eye on eDealInfo, but with so many deal aggregation sites, plus retailers like geeks.com, NewEgg, etc, plus scores of options in powerful CPUs, it's hard for someone who doesn't follow this all the time to pick out the most outstanding deals.

As this system will have to last a few years, would love to have a Core i5-2500K cpu, which seems to provide a great balance of performance/price, but those appear to be going for $600 & up...

It is showing me that there is a wireless adapter under Device Manager but it is not picking up any wireless connections. I looked on the back of the computer and there is the golden plated antenna area for the wireless but there is no antenna attached to it? Could that be the problem? I haven't used a PC in a long time, so I am not familiar with wireless cards in general.

If someone can tell me what I should do, I'd appreciate it. I just assumed that it would pick up a wireless connection right of the bat.

Other than that, it seems quite fast and all good.

No. The hard disk has a recover partition built on it. You can create a set of recovery disks once you get booted up. As long as the recovery partition is in tact, you can boot to it and restore Windows that way.

Got my confirmation emails ("Woot order tracking number") on Sept 1; the systems arrived yesterday, Sept 7.
