'Smartpost' shipping means you will wait at least 2 weeks before you get this. It says they will ship within 5 days, so count on it being 5 days before they ship, and then another 5 days before it gets to you.

Smartpost is slow, but you can write to service@woot.com, just to be sure it is on track.

That's right, they're only going to kill the truly, ridiculously, dangerously stupid people out there. The dummies who are too stupid to live anyway. The only ones who are going to get killed are the individuals who are so lacking in basic sense that they would trust the $30 toy rather then their own senses when staring down a muddy logging road, or trying to pull a trailer up a sand dune.

I'm scared to think of how expensive and useless these GPS's would be if the lawyers took over and tried to compensate for the most idi*tic of idi*ts who attempt to use this device.

I got mine yesterday. I created an account on Home, hooked it to my computer and it said a newer map was available and was downloaded and installed for free. I programmed in my work address this morning and it recommended the route I always take, which is not a direct route. I'm very pleased with mine after the first use.

Mine said exactly the same thing... Only reason I bought it was the new maps.

Mine also said a newer map was available and listed a price. However, in the Home software, I went under the Tools menu item and selected "Use Latest Map Guarantee". It then told me a newer map was available, and allowed me to download and install it for free.

2 things...the first did the unit have the TM at end of the 550?
The second was this only a one time update? ...it sounds like it was.

My Ease wouldn't let me do the "Latest Map" as it determined I was outside the 30 day window. I gave a quick call to TomTom, explained I had a Woot-purchased refurb and it was reporting the expiration of the Latest Map Guarantee, and he had me hooked up with the free update within minutes. Very quick and very easy.

Thanks for this info. I ordered two of them and both said that they were outside the 30 day window.

I picked up 2 of the Ease's. I had the same problem "device is past the time period to be eligible for updates" for 30 day guarantee. You have to call Tomtom 866-486-6866 and get the 30 day guarantee "pushed" to your device.

But before you call-Turn on the device first and do the setup- then get tomtom home from the website (v 2.8 something now). When you plug in the device it will ask if you want to connect to the PC- say yes. then it will ask you if you have an account or do you want to create one (create it).

Also- you have to have a separate account AND e-mail for each device- be prepared with different e-mails when you call.

If you are getting these as gifts, you will want to update the maps before you give them out or risk giving out the device with a severely outdated map (Year or more old?). My parents previously purchased a Tomtom but waited to long and never got the map guarantee AND they are too cheap to buy the new maps. Can't say that I blame them ($30+ to update)

Last tip- They didn't ask, but I would stop short of telling them it is a refurb. If they would have asked (shouldn't they know by serial no>???) and refused to give me the 30 day map guarantee, I would have argued the point that the guarantee is written on the box and manual they sent with the device.

Got Mine Today - TomTom Home software was saying that the one time update had expired as well. I called Technical support and they also told me the offer was expired for refurb units. I said that is BullSh*t, I was reading posts where you gave the updates to other people, and then the tech said ok we will grant you a one time upgrade for the maps and put put me on hold for 3 minutes and then walked me through the update process. Geez!

Got my TomTom today. It's the first time in a long while a "refurb" product has actually looked used. Smudges and dust all over plus some white paint or enamel on one corner I can't quite scrape off without damaging the finish. Kinda sucks as this was a gift for my mom.

In regards to the map guarantee, TomTom Home software had the unit as expired as well. It required over 30 minutes on the phone with TomTom support, with them having me create an account, open an incident via their webpage, and then submit my Woot receipt. After they reviewed it, they had me submit the product page and describe the map guarantee. It was unpleasant and far too lengthy. So brace yourself before calling in.

Got mine today and it's going back to woot.

The details said:

Announces street names and turn-by-turn directions (including street and place names) so you can keep your eyes on the road.

It does not. It only says; 'turn left or turn right.'

Before you return it, have you checked the voice settings? My Google-Fu has found that only computer voices can speak the street names and in addition, there may be a check box next to it to enable that feature.

I am on the phone with tomtom now and they are saying they will not give me the one time update. come on woot and tomtom, get your listing right.

UPDATE:after being told 10 times they wouldn't do it and insisting on talking to a manager, she came back after a 10 minute delay and said they would do it. what a pain.

Just set mine up. It too said the update period had expired. I called tech support, but while I was navigating the phone menus, the TomTom Home program popped up and said something about a critical update. I let it do what it wanted and one of the steps was to install a "one time update" of some kind. I hung up before talking to anyone so I could check out what it did. I now have North America 2GB 845.2645.2645. Problem is, I didn't check before the update, so I don’t know if that’s an improvement or not. Near as I can tell, that is current, but I'm not 100% sure. You might want to try waiting for TT Home to do its thing before calling in. (Also, check map versions first so you'll know if you got an update!) It still says the update period has expired, but if 845.2645.2645 is the latest, I guess it doesn't matter.

All fine now, phoned up the support number as others suggested and they activated my device. Took quite a while and the 2nd EASE i purchased wasnt listed in their system - apparently you need to connect each device to a computer and register it before they can see the serial number in their system.

Loaded the Home software, could not get the map update thru the software because it said the device was past the 30 days period.

So i called TomTom, got a tech and was told "it is NOT possible to update the maps on this device". When i mentioned that it said i was qualified for the upgrade from the listing, she just kept saying that "it was NOT possible". She had little other to say.

So for me, i guess "it is NOT possible".

She would not help me.

Edit: I am not the arguing type, I think if you are persistent and resolute, you can get the upgrade...nice guys finish last!

Clarification: "Text-To-Speech" does NOT equate to 'announces street names', and THAT is my only real disappointment in this unit. Instructing me, "After 300 yards, take the third left" is almost USELESS in a hectic driving situation. May as well announce the distance in "rods".

It DOES announce the street names. You have the wrong voice enabled. You have to select a computer generated voice. Mine announces the street names just fine.

It has a suction cup on the back of the GPS that will attach it to the windshield. The suction cup is part of the back bracket and you can reverse the bracket to allow it to stick on the plate that you can stick on your dash if you want to or the windshield. The bracket will rotate so you can put it on at the angle you need.

Just got mine today. I hope that I don't have the same unfortunate trouble some of you have been having getting the maps updated.

I have to say that I've never purchased a refurb in this kind of condition before. Typically, I've had very good luck with refurbished units of anything I've ever purchased. When I opened my EASE box, the TomTom unit had fingerprints and some sort of greasy film on it, and the mounting plate was covered in hair. Pretty gross.

And I just noticed, on the inside packaging it says that TomTom's customer service was "recognized by JD Power and Associates for providing an Outstanding Customer Service Experience". LOL. Not that I give JD Power any respect, but from what others are saying on here, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Thanks!

Also, I called and mentioned this thread and got my update. I had her stay on the phone while I (well, she) set up a tomtom account and emailed her a screen capture of my woot receipt after she send me the request email. She wanted to hang up and call back after I sent them this. She walked me though the update process and all in all, it took about 15 minutes. Be prepared to wait about 11/2 hours for the update to download.

Just got off the phone with TomTom CS. I explained that I bought my GPS on Woot and that it said that my update guarantee was expired. They told me no problem and all I had to do was provide a copy of my receipt and they would activate it for me. Before I even did it I checked back on TomTom Home and it said a newer map was available and it's downloading/installing as we speak.

The CS people were very friendly, albeit a little hard to understand.
