Good price, but considering how much Tom Tom charges for map updates, I'd spend more and get Lifetime Maps. I bought a Tom Tom with Lifetime map updates from Amazon Goldbox a few days ago. Works much better than my smartphone - Droid X (Verizon Android) with car dock. The Droid X reboots constantly, switches to the phone screen and won't let you switch back to the GPS screen during a phone call, picks very bizarre, much longer routes sometimes, and if you leave the planned route in an area without cell coverage, you're lost.
Glad I bought one for my daughter.
mbmanaus wrote:I would never buy another TomTom after mine took me down 50 miles of insanely dangerous old mining roads in northern Idaho when there were two perfectly good freeways that would have taken me to my destination two hours faster. If this had happened in the winter I likely would not have survived to tell the tale. On the plus side it saved me from having to pay to go to a zoo since I got to see my fair share of wild bears that day.
I think this will happen with every GPS. My dad's Garmin tried taking him off a cliff. My Garmin has tried sending me through thick woods and on an old road with sand pits (nearly got our trailer permanently stuck) that ran next to an active tank military testing site.
No one answered the question if it displays speed? I have a Chinese scooter and the speedometers is always off. Will it give me off freeway routes?
toddinfl wrote:That's your own fault for relying on tech and not using any common sense! You still need to have an idea of the best way to get someplace and not blindly follow this little talking robot.
Stupid comment!!! What's the point of having a GPS? It is for the directionally challenged...
Please check with TomTom before you buy as my last refurbished GPS from TomTom did not allow a map update. When I called the Customer service, they clearly said that the latest map guarantee is only for non-refurbished devices. However this information is back from 2007!
Tom Tom, The best way to get lost!
How'd y'all get it to display in Woot colors?
bobberuchi wrote:Well you could go with Verizon and you will have better coverage. On another note I took my Android Smartphones GPS work without cell phone coverage. I drive with 4G turned off and it works fine.
better coverage is only good in the east....try the mountain valleys of the west. gps is good anywhere you can see the sky...and it's got free useage, no monthly charge
[quote postid="4620990" user="cole103"] You don't use the sides, quote] I use the sides! Perhaps because I always have it oriented with north at the top.
Damnit. That's the second item in a week I was actually interested in wooting that sold out before I had the opportunity. Good job getting some good deals, woot.

Really? Well using a bit of rare-these-days common sense would help a tad. If you choose the shortest route option you will run into this with any GPS. Choose fastest route and you rarely will be put on stuff like logging roads. You should also carry a paper map when unfamiliar areas. Seems as though you made the ignorant comment.

Why are our GPS's trying to kill us!

BAZINGA!!!
Damn! I missed it.
laineywainey wrote:So, like, every time an updated map is available, we have to buy it to upload?
You don't have to buy a new one every time one is available. I have an older Tom-Tom one (the cheap one, and it's 7 years old and going strong) and I've only bought new maps twice. I'm giving this one to my parents, since it reads off the street names and they can't see the small screens as well.
Got pulled into meetings and missed my opportunity at buying GPS. Did anyone buy more than one and would be interested in selling one at $30.00? let me know - [mod: please PM, do not post your email here]
Whats the deal on map updates ???????? the main routes never change, very few new highways in tweny years, if any. Only new development streets, who cares...had the same GPS FOR 5 YEARS......
kitcatbrat wrote:Wow, $29.99 for a GPS unit. I never thought I'd see the day.
Considering most SmartPhones have similar technology, I think it is only a matter of time before gas stations give them away free with a fill-up.
Last time I checked, the TomTom didn't categorize restaurants by type of food. One feature in my Garmin I use frequently - being able to display only fast food or Chinese food, etc., is very helpful. In my book, I will take a Garmin any day of a TomTom. It IS possible that TomTom has more recently corrected this issue...
29.99 to save even one headache of not getting lost? Or, my favorite, the we're lost fight, IN for one!
Too bad one it won't talk in PIRATE> that would be cool.

You can get the gps location data with no cell coverage but last time I checked the maps were coming from the internet over your data connection.
I used one of these to go from NJ to GA and back. Can be slow as hell, doesn't remember the address you're going to if you shut it off (like going in a restaurant- yet punch in the same address like 5-6 times, and it starts asking if you're still want to go there), and it can take forever to pick up satellites but it works as it should once it gets going.
Does not WALMART honor ANY advertised price? Print off the AD and take it to Walmart and get it for the same price.

theymatch any locally advertized price and woot's not local for most of the country ...and wally world sells new stuff not refurbs
Didn't check back until now, looks like people were pretty brutal with my story but here is what really happened. I had spent some time checking different routes on Google Maps before the trip and there were two ways to get to the destination (Kalispell, MT) that took the same amount of time but there was one which I preferred. I set the GPS which showed a small map which seemed to be identical to the route which I was expecting and the total trip time was exactly what I expected so I started on my way. At one point it told me to turn right onto a very nice highway which I knew wasn't the one I was expecting but it was an absolutely gorgeous 75mph highway along Lake Pend Oreille which seemed like it would be a great route. 80 miles later it said to turn off onto a road which had a sign saying it would lead to the Hwy which I was planning on taking so it seemed liked I had just enjoyed a faster scenic route to my destination. That was until this road turned to dirt which turned to a one lane mining road through the middle of the Kootenai Forest which was flooded in some areas and had plenty of wild bears and elk. At that point I was so far along that it wasn't a matter of a three point turn to get back to where I was and I figured I would rough it out. Long story short (well, still pretty long) this road lasted much longer than I could have expected and it would have been impassable in a smaller car or in inclement weather. I think it is fair to trust a navigation device with IQ routes to not take me on potentially lethal roads and nothing like this ever came up with my Garmin.

Mikeymadness wrote:Anyone know if this comes with maps for Canada? By the video on Amazon and the page at TomTom (which sells the refurb for $90) it does, but I only see U.S. mentioned on woot!
No. They do not consider dog-sled trails actual roads, so there is nothing to map up there in Canaderrr. I've heard rumors that Canada is considering building a road, as soon as they have 2 destinations to travel between. So in the meantime, you'll just have to follow along on the dog-sled trails and hope a grizzly bear don't get you.
i think this is great i have had garmins and also tomtom. about the same. why do you worry about all the features all you need to know is how to get to where you are going. that is the purpose of a gps
I bought one because with my luck they will start closing down various freeway entrances exits the day after I get it so the state can start building that 900 trillion dollar freeway project. This will render the unit totally useless since it won't know about all the detours but if I didn't buy it the highway project will never start. So I figure for $29.95 I am doing everyone within a thirty mile radius of where I live a huge favor.
dascooper wrote:For the price, it would be worth it keeping as a spare for use in rental cars when traveling. I'm thinking about it - already have an old Garmin in one car and an indash I installed in my 2002 Buick Century.
Man, I wish I thought of that when I looked this morning, I'd snagged one. Stupid, stupid, stupid. You'd think that my getting lost yesterday would have brought that to mind.
Got myself a Tomtom
Wow! You're an dumba$$ You've managed to miss the point completely. Don't solely rely on a piece of tech to keep you and your family safe. But like they say: "Common sense isn't very common!"

Woot only sells one product per day at (usually) a very good price. If you miss getting the product, you have to wait until it shows up again, which could take weeks or months, if ever. http://www.woot.com/WhatIsWoot.aspx#q3 Occasionally, there is an event called a "Woot Off" where Woot sells one product until it is sold out and then immediately sells another item, and so on. http://www.woot.com/WhatIsWoot.aspx#q9 Good luck on your next Woot! It's a dangerous addiction...

Oh boy! on-board navigation for my motorcycle. Remaining tasks: Purchase motorcycle Wire in a flush-mount USB power port Tour the country.

I was going to say the same thing... First GPS I bought and set it to the "shortest route" sent me up a logging road. Changed the setting to "fastest route" and had no problems with that GPS and the ones I bought for the rest of the family.
Has any one who ordered this GPS received it yet? Have a email with a receipt stating it has been paid for...that's it. Unable t track this item unlike the the other item I purchased the same day.
