If using Titanium backup to install Market on PE... make sure to use a phone that also has android 2.2!
At first, I was using phone with android 2.3 and it install was failing. Finally thought of using my G1 to backup that has android 2.2... and it worked!
Any way you might be able to post the files you used for the restore without jeopardizing your security? I've been struggling to get a version of Market that works for several days now.

Hi - stupid question. It looks like there are various ways of getting books over to the eink side, IF you download a book on your PC, jump through a few hoops, do some file conversion, etc. and then transfer it over to the eDGe. Is there any elibrary (similar to kindle, kobo, etc.) where you can just download the durn things directly to the eDGe without jumping through the hoops? I'm trying to set this up for some technophobes, and they're not going to be able to handle all the steps involved in getting stuff on to this thing. I just want to open a library app, download stuff in the right format, and have it openable on the eink side. Is that too much to ask?

morriea wrote:One way to make sure that you can get books formatted for the eink side.....I simply put a bookmark in the browser for projectgutenburg mobile site(an example)...I do not then need an app. Just click on the bookmarks icon after opening the browser and choose it.
edit (the Kindle App opens books on the Tablet side).
That seems to be a good option. Looks like you can put a direct link to a URL on the desktop. (Using bookmarks inside a browser might be a bit too intense for my users so the more it looks like an "app" the easier it will be on them.
) It looks like you can download the books, then open them and then click on the download, and it will prompt you to open it with the Library app which does the rest. PROBABLY good enough. Thanks!

I had a couple of questions about the 2.2 download.
I opened the notepad and see the directions. Some of the characters are little squares. I have seen them before. So when I went to my flash drive to rename the file, I copy/pasted the file name. But it has one of those squares and my flash drive won't accept it as a name for the file. What do I do?
Also, do I extract the file and put it on the flash or the zipped one.
First I assume your downloaded the torrent. The instruction file is stored in UTF-8 format. I'm not sure what notepad does with it. I don't uses Windows as my primary system, so I didn't have the problem. The file name you need is "update.zip.ermine-0.9.PE", rename to"update.zip".

Thanks. I learned about torrents last night. And other neat tricks too. I have it. Should I use the .zip or extracted file or does it matter?
Extract the files. Instructions are included in a text file.

please give me a gmail account and password. probably best if you create a new one since i dont trust myself with access to your personal gmail. send it to edge.pocket@gmail.com. i'll confirm here whether i got the info or not. i created the email as dummy email but it wouldnt work out in the long run. will explain next time.
i typed my whole plan of action then lost it. will retype next time. anyway. send me the info to the email above and i will send you the ( titanium generated) backup based on your provided email address. then keep fingers and toes crossed. oh yeah, i will only be backing up the google services framework and market.
if it works, make me famous! i mean i'll share the idea and hopefully everyone else with android 2.2 phones will assist to give other wooters get market access.
lets try with one guineapig.... er... volunteer... then if it works, i'll help the others.
Yup, I will volunteer! I will get this to you asap. Hopefully later this afternoon. Thanks very much!

YOU CANNOT REGISTER THE PRODUCT, SO THINGS LIKE THE GOOGLE-APPS STORE DO NOT WORK! AND YOU CANNOT GET THE "UPDATES". IT TOOK ME 2 DAYS TO FIND THE UPDATE.ZIP FILE SO I COULD UPGRADE FROM 1.6 TO 2.2. THE GOOGLE BOOKS STORE DOES NOT WORK EITHER (in some cases you can get to these app site, but when trying to download you get one of several errors.)
It's really my fault. I trusted Woot that they would sell a product that worked with a company that exists. I've learned, when buying from Woot, ya better do your home work.
You'll be delighted to know that in many posts above we have some exceptionally helpful people with tips and helpful advice.

robingsmith wrote:Can you give a beginner explanation of what "rooting" my device will do for me? I am talking specifically about the Z4 app you have linked from the Amazon app store on the site above.
As previously stated "rooting" can be very dangerous. The PE, as is, does not allow you to do everything; especially things that could "brick" it. Brick means it will do nothing but just sit there; being a heavy weight for say papers. As a brick, there is usually no way to recover. I could type 7 characters including spaces; hit return; and wipe everything off a system as root.
That being said; you have been warned.
On the other hand rooting may allow apps to do very useful things. It comes down to the degree of risk involved. There are a number of apps that came with the PE that do things that required that they be rooted(and they were). The main difference is that enTourage had tested them and shall we say, given them their blessing as safe to use. Apps from other sources may also be fine. Make sure you do your research and read carefully the instructions that come with those apps. This is where the Z4 app comes into play.
The Z4 app allows you to set rooting as temporary or permanent. I would suggest using temporary, as you normally only need to be "root" during the installation of the app. This is a safer way to run it. Turn it on and off as needed. This can be true of apps that when they run check to see if rooting is turned on before it is allowed to do an operation.
Rooting - in and of itself is not bad, on the contrary, can be very useful; but there can be risks. Knowing the source of the app and being able to trust that source is vital.

What/how is root?
As background, UNIX is an operating system that has been around for many years now. It has always been very popular in the engineering community. It has since migrated to many other areas including the financial community. You will find UNIX systems in a majority of server rooms these days. UNIX is also know for being very secure.
It has since been cloned many times. BSD and Linux versions, of the latter there are to many distributions to count. Derived from Linux was Android a smaller version to operate on phones and tablets along with other devices.
The basic structure has remained in all these versions. Also the user root has remained too. The kernel or core of the operating system knows user root and will allow anyone who is using this account on a system to do what ever he wants, no matter how stupid/dangerous that may be. As I said with 7 characters I could wipe everything off a system. I doubt there is one UN*X administrator that at one time of another hasn't typed those 7 characters thinking he/she was in the correct directory/folder but in fact was in a different one and wiped out large portions of data, if not the whole system. You learn very quickly to check, double check, and check again before hitting that return key.
But what is root. Root is the user who is assigned the user account numbered 0(Zero). As root you can override all permissions on the system. All files on a UNIX/UN*X(UNIX clone) system use multiple layers of permissions. Also a file on these systems can be defined as any file, directory/folder, executable command, data base, link, etc..., which is sometimes confusing. Every "file" is assigned an owner and a group. Owners can belong to one or more groups. The permissions on a "file" let you know what everyone is able to do with that file.
Some example:
-rwxr-xr-- root operator FileName1
Is a regular file(the first dash), root owns it and has read/write/executable permissions(rwx), is in the group operator. Those users in the group operator have read/executable permissions(r-x). A group allows you to share data to a limited number of users. All other users on the system have only read permissions(r--).
drw-rw-r-- friartek home DirName1
Is a directory/folder(the d), owned by friartek with read/write permissions(rw-), users in group "home" also has read/write access(rw-) and everyone else has read permission only(r--)
With this is place every user is restricted to the allowed permissions set on any given "file". It also keeps each user's data private and secure if used properly. The exception is root.
You should only use the root account when needed. This is not an account to be used all the time. Using it all the time is only asking for trouble, and sooner or later trouble will find you.
Hopefully I kept this simple enough and is clear enough for all to understand. To anyone not interested, sorry I wasted your time.
