wickedZin wrote:Help. I bought two. Now how do I buy 2 SquareTrade warranties?

Never mind. I guess I just need to do them separately.

I wondered the same thing. And then decided to only buy 1 warranty. They don't REQUIRE any specific information so the first one that breaks has the warranty. I just have to hope that only one breaks...

CaveMole wrote:Got one last time. Excellent hardware for the price. However, the OS is very out of date. It is hard to find apps that will run on this device. That said, at the price, it does do what it was intended to do.

I still intend to try to hack it and install Android 2.2.

One big drawback was that some of the DRM ePub readers only work on the tablet part. They will not drive the e-ink display.

A good device for the price, but it is a bit of an orphan.

If you like you can put Amazon's Kindle and B&N's Nook for android on the box. The Kindle stuff works ok on the tablet lcd screen. I've been less than impressed with the e-ink side's reader and note taking software. But the android tablet side's been great.

In for 2!!

Figure I will attempt to root one and flash Android 2.2, if it breaks use the other one.

Or if it goes fine...I have a perfect Christmas gift for someone. =]

These seem for sure worth the price. I really liked the idea when they came out but $400 was just a bit too much for me to justify. But I can't wait to get these!! =]

Know the feeling, walk into stores with it and people are asking what is that, and where can I get one. Stopped in McDonald's and was reading and people would ask the same thing. To bad there will be no more of them.

Interesting device. Bought one to tinker with.

I plan to upgrade the OS to 2.2 once it is delivered. Can anyone confirm whether you can use Skype on this?

Help me understand- why is the eInk display SO important?

reason I ask- if the eMatic version has a reader (it does), is from WM, runs on AND 2.2, and is the maker is still in business, why not that over this?

just wondering

why is the eInk display SO important? eInk is way superior for reading plain text.

Both are sold out so it's a moot point, but e-ink is readable in direct sunlight. You can bring it to the pool to read as you watch your kids swim, for example.

You can also take notes with it. I do property management and I use it to keep track of mileage and expenses throughout the day. I then upload the pdf to evernote and share it on my other tablets. Makes taxes easier to manage when I keep details together.

HA! I spent so much time researching this, convincing myself, and then getting excited about it, that when I decided to finally pull the trigger, it sold out.

yuppicide wrote:I want one of these. I don't have the money right now, but I did do some research today on the device:

- Color screen is nice and responsive, eInk screen isn't as responsive and might downright suck, so really only good for eReader function. Some games seem to run good on this device.

- You can plug in an external USB keyboard

- Comes with Wi-Fi, but if you want wired ethernet you need to purchase an adapter

- Upgrading is a mixed bag. Rooting the unit is not needed. Upgrading can make your unit not work at all and at current there may be no way to fix the problem. The Ermine 2.2 upgrade was Beta, so it was never finished.

- Borders Nook and Amazon Kindle software works on Android 2.1 and above, so you won't be able to use these on a stock device.. you will need to risk trying the upgrade. You can however just stick to free ePub and PDF books that are available online. If you use PDF books they sometimes don't work right, so you will need to convert them, but not all of them will convert. As far as I see ePub has no issues like that.

- As suggested by others here that mobileread forum is a great community and wealth of knowledge. They are quick to help. There's some people there who might be able to help you save your device if you're upgrading and it doesn't work, but no guarantees. They're probably just the guys who have the most knowledge. From what I read some people are working on fixing the upgrade so there are no problems upgrading.

After applying the upgrade to Froyo from the web I've got both Amazon Kindle and B&N Nook working on the tablet side. Not too shabby.
SSH is up as well allowing me to log in to work from the tablet. Does almost as much as my netbook in a nice form factor. It's not thin and is as heavy as my netbook. It's really built solid, though.

werdffej wrote:Can the Android OS be upgraded?

Lots of "if"'s in the answer.
Some smartphones actually have the upgrade capability built-in. Some don't. I hear it's the same for tablets. About the only way to know if your device is upgradable is to check the manufacturer's web site and possibly even send them an e-mail.

1) low power consumption - once info is displayed it stays there with no additional support needed from the system until the page requires updating again.

2) It is much easier to read in daylight conditions. Normal tablet screens not so much, some not at all in bright sunlight.

You need to have a light on to see the text just like a book. I find it much easier on the eyes.

A larger number of readers use this technology.

I took the bait and bought one, but almost at the same time I bought an equally inexpensive Kobo ereader (a discontinued model) a day ago. Now I will have to make the choice of keeping one over the other. Woot, how you make life so complex (yet interesting and rewarding at the same time, I hope, in this instance.)

If not, I may sell the Pocket Edge. If anyone is interested I'll offer it for the same price bought. PM me and I'll keep in touch.

Can someone verify that these are accurate steps to upgrade to android 2.2? Minus the links that don't work.

1. Download the Ermine Update file for edge or pocket edge.
eDGe 2.0 http://www.entourageedge.com/updates...zip.ermine-0.9
Pocket http://www.entourageedge.com/updates...zip.ermine-0.9
2. Rename the file to "update.zip"
3. Place this file in the root (not a subdirectory) of a USB stick
4. Verify your edge/pocket is OFF.
5. Insert the USB stick into a USB port on the device.
6. While holding down the MENU and ROTATE buttons on the LCD side of the device, press the power key.
7. Continue to hold the MENU and ROTATE keys down for 10 seconds. 8. After 1-2 minutes you should see an "Updating software" splash screen.
13. After ~15 minutes the device will reboot and will be running the Ermine BETA build.
