WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS GRUESOME FOOTAGE OF OUR CEO'S PERFORATED FINGER.

The sun has set on Woot's first ever Monkey Games, a highly organized, month-long, company-wide effort to depress productivity! Some may question the wisdom of squandering so many workday hours on such frivolity -- but from our perspective, we'd have to say the Games were a huge success.

(Seriously. We have to say that.)

These games had it all, though! The intoxicating stimulant of victory! The total downer of defeat! And a genuine, season-ending injury for one competitor: Our head honcho, Matt Rutledge, who got his middle finger stabbed open on one of the dunk tank's sharp edges. It's a bummer, too, because that's the finger he uses to communicate with most. We stopped using that tank immediately, both because of its dangerously pokey protrusions and because the risk of shark attacks went way up with blood in the water.

Despite the boss's digital damage, the Monkey Games were pretty fun. Maybe we'll do it again next year!

Then again, maybe we'll all be dead in the Mayan apocalypse by then. You just never know.

Oh god, that IS a pretty nasty gash. It looks like your prize was a trip to the ER for 6 stitches? Possibly seven, I really didn't want to look close enough to get an accurate number beyond a 5 second at a glance count. Made my stomach churn a bit to see it anyway.

Who'd you guys rent that cage from (as I assume Woot does not own a random dunk tank) cause like, as proven above, that thing is kinda dangerous. If nothing else they need to know so no one else suffers an injury. Maybe attach some plastic shields or put some of those little plastic caps on the sharp exposed pointy ends on the inside to protect the dunkee.

In any case, "It's a bummer, too, because that's the finger he uses to communicate with most". Now you'll have to learn to communicate ambidextrously. Hopefully your other hand gets the point across just as well.

Did you at least get someone to kiss it and make it better?

He has a lovely wife who made sure he checked into Foursquare while he was at the ER. It's about the same thing now-a-days.

I hope you added a teaspoon of red food coloring to the water before the rental company came to pick it up. You should know by now that the Legal Dept. always wins.

And will you be sending the dunk tank in a Bundle of Crops any time soon? Along with hefty absolving-Woot!-of-any-liability paperwork?

Also, get well soon CEO of Woot! I've nearly cut off my finger with a cooking knife, so I can empathize.

That isn't the same shirt as the shirt seen/worn at the Monkey Games.

Well, to get that one, the first step would be to begin employment with woot.com prior to the beginning of summer, 2011.

Also, isn't the fence intended to protect the dunkee?

It was a pretty elite run of shirts. We gave some out to the winners of the games we posted in the blog. We hope to make it a yearly thing, so maybe you'll have another chance next year? Maybe a new design?

My understanding is that his finger was actually pinched in the hinge/rolling mechanism that flips the seat and does the dunking.

ALLEGEDLY his hand was there because someone triggered the dunking by hand when he wasn't looking. There are rumors of a YouTube video, or Zapruder Film, showing distinctly one Woot employee, doubtless blood-crazed with disgruntlement, flipping the switch that sent our CEO's finger into the shredder.

But of course, if you believe in shadowy cabals influencing the events of the company through behind-the-dunk-tank machinations, you're just a conspiracy theorist!

Right?

I am surprised that there hasn't been a push for dunk-tank safety reform. I had a manager get a gash on his head from the dunk tank.

It really got the sharks warmed up for the next guy.

The assets team manager took a deep breath and held his nose prior to being dunked. Weaksauce was sprinkled all over that one. I am sure the depth of his dive was calculated and that woot staff ensured that he wouldn't suffer from decompression illness or nitrogen narcosis.

I got 2 monkey games shirts (different from the woot athletics shirts that were sold). Got them from winning 2 of the weekly competitions. Picked up a green one for myself and an orange for the wife. Get comments on them almost daily.

Also got 2 of the limited woot monkey games flying monkeys!

So I guess those OSHA-approved tests of skill, speed, strength, dexterity, and charisma aren't all that OSHA friendly after all... oh well.

Tell your CEO that he got off easy. Our CEO blew out his Achilles playing volleyball at last summer's company event. Not a fun scene at all... but at least I got the point.

I am curious as to why I got this most awesome gift of a woot monkey games monkey on my doorstep.

A big thanks by the by to whomever was in charge of that decision.

Apologies, I do not know how to reformat this.

What was that - what did you say? Something about reading or what - gotta go get my glasses but they don't help my memory. Oh lordy, but the sweet, dear green hatted monkey will. Now where was I?
