does this suck?

Seems like a Good price. I paid a whole lot more for the one we have. But I'm curious if these are like printers- the unit is cheap but refills expensive?

Does anyone know about the availability of refill rolls for this sealer?

I got the last one they had and you can use any sealer bags even the generic ones. I think all the bags will work if the width of them will fit.

You can use any plastic bags you want, even 99 cent store brands. AS long as the plastic melts, you can form a seal (that's why you can reseal potato chip bags and other snacks). IN other words, you don't need specific refills. Any roll that isn't too wide will be fine. In fact, these rolls aren't important unless you need to make variable size bags. You can just buy quality freezer bags and do just as well. In fact, if the foods aren't sharp and it's for shortterm storage, I literally use 99 cent store bags.

If, however, you want to do sous vide or boiling bags, you need to make sure the plastic won't melt in 212F water. Well, sous vide is usually done at 140-180F, but you get the idea.

If the bags are too wide, you can simply fold the opening over itself until it fits. The heating strip can usually melt through 4-6 layers, depsending on the thickness of the bags. If you use very cheap 99 cent bags, it can probably melt through 10 layers.

Would it be advisable to use this to seal one's precious garments to ward off things like moths, dust, and mildew?

You can, but you'll need some large bags and they probably won't fit into this machine. You're better off with those vacuum storage bags where you suck the air out with a vacuum cleaner.

As a cheap alternative, simply use garbage bags. Fill and squeeze the bag's opening over the hose tightly then vacuum out the air. You'll be amazed at how small the bag gets. QUickly pull the hose out and then tie the bag. IT works fine.

I'm going to use one in the garage and one for the house. I should have been sealing my welding rods and other stuff to keep it moisture proof.

Got one! I had been using the Reynolds hand-held system with the bags you could buy at the grocery store, until they quit making them... then you could get bags at HSN until THEY quit making them. Tired of freezer-burned meat but way too cheap to spend the big bucks on a food saver system. We'll see how this one does!

A cheap reusable alternative are tough big ziploc bags. If the zipper is well-made, it'll be moisture and air proof. Put in some silica or other moisture-absorbent material to trap moisture.

I went to get my coffee and they're gone! That was a quick one.

Aaarrrggghh! Got mine in the mail today and it was broken! The little lock tab on the left-hand side was broken off (in the bottom of the box), so it won't lock properly to seal. I've emailed Woot for an RMA. Fie and blast! A bit more bubblewrap in the packaging (particularly at the ends, where the breakage occurred) could have prevented this; however, I'm sure Woot received the cartons sealed. Guess I'll have to wait till next time around to see how much this product sucks...

Almost the same exact thing happened to me, only on the RIGHT side, so the whole top assembly comes off. :-(

Me three!! The tab on the left side is broken the unit acts like it doesn't get power. DON'T THEY EVEN TEST THESE REFURBS BEFORE SHIPPING?

For $15, I'm debating whether I want to go thru the hassle of an RMA or just throw it in the trash.

I am also having problems. The part that the lock clips over on the left size is broken. I can't use it unless I put force on the machine with my hands. It also rattles like stuff is broken off inside when you move it around. Not very happy should have avoided this one. What do you do when you receive a refurbished unit that is broken? I contacted service@woot.com

Yes, exactly, you contact the email service. They told me they refunded my full amount and I don't have to send the unit back. I may try repairing mine with Sugru. We'll see.

391 of these things were sold. I wonder how many work?

I haven't even plugged mine in yet, as the the unit I received was disgusting and covered in food. emailing service@woot.com

Just finally got around to trying mine, and *surprise, surprise* it doesn't seal or suck or save. Nothing.
Was also told by woot support that there is nothing they can do to help me. Awesome.
Have to remember that the next time I feel like getting some "deal" on here.
