This one was indeed a marathon. Probably the hardest I've ever worked for a Bundle of Crops Lost hope several times in the process.

This was my first woot-off, and I was determined to get a Bundle of Crops I pulled up woot as the Bundle of Crops was up and the website loaded fine. When I clicked the gold "I Want One" button, it would just and load and load until a minute or so later I would get the webpage would not respond error.

The woot.com page would keep loading fine, and I could see the bar go down over like 15-20 minutes, but the "I Want One" button would never load the order page!

How does one get one of these? Do people mainly use bots? Are people just lucky? I thought I got it when I loaded the page as the bar was full, but apparently I didn't.

In the olden days Woot used to do 7500 craps but you had the option of buying 1, 2 or 3 of them. Now they do 2500 craps but each has 3, so it comes out the same.

Woot must have gotten 500 (or maybe 503) order requests from me. I started up about 5 tabs, contrary to my typical strategy since I knew the 503 error was something out of the ordinary. I never got the confirmation page, but after a while the order page kept coming up saying I had already ordered it. Of course, I never got an email, confirmation page, and the my account page wasn't loading up at the time.

However, once again I'm glad I got in on this crap. Thanks woot!

Been a member since 2004 and this is only my 2nd Bundle of Crops in 7 years, the last one coming 4 years ago this month. Got to the order page, plugged in my info and posted.... 503. Refreshed for some 35 minutes before it finally took me to order confirmation. Clicked buy it.... and it churned for 5 or 10 minutes it seemed like and then forwarded me to status and then 503'd again. I was going to keep refreshing that page too, but I saw my account had been debited already so I just let it go. Refreshed a few minutes later and saw the receipt. I think fighting the servers is half the fun!

Wasn't even watching the WootOff! today, just happened to browse over to woot.com for something to do while I have some downtime at work and saw it up. Sometimes you just get lucky.

That was the strangest Barrel of Custard I have ever scored. Right off I got to the order screen, entered my info and clicked the button -- 503. Kept refreshing that window to no avail. Gave up and went to lunch.

Came back from lunch and tried refreshing that window and it went right through. Got to the last page with the big button and pushed it. It thought for a while and then bam, my browser tab closed all by itself. I thought I had missed it. A few seconds later I got an email from Paypal saying that the have processed an $8 order from woot. Went to my Account page and saw the 9/14 Barrel of Custard. My 9th Crap is in the Bag.

Edit: Looks like I got the last one!

Peace and word out., Oh and yes I did get a bag after hitting the button 5000 times and getting the 503 error for over 40 min. try try try again.......

Yeeeeehaaaa! got one too after so many failures in recent months. No email, but it does show under "my account". Persistence on the 503, 503, 503, 503's ... for almost 1 hr pays off! Took screenshots of my account too just to prove it, should there be issues with woot! having doled out too many Bundle of Crops. That was the strangest and prolonged aiCache crap in the Amazonian clouds I've ever seen.

My experience was pretty similar to the others I see just skimming this page. No receipt, but it's showing up on my account, so I guess I'm in for crap. Yay! It's a good thing I had a free hour in middle of the day.

That's three in a row for me, which is a freakin' miracle since I only won one in the previous four years.

Thanks woot!

Zeno wrote:this is why it says "aicache". this is why the comment section still works while the woot-off servers don't. They are separate.

from https://aws.amazon.com/solutions/case-studies/aicache/

AWS Case Study: AiCache and Woot.com

Woot.com chooses aiCache Web Accelerator instances running on the Amazon EC2 cloud to manage traffic spikes. Woot.com is a well known online e-tailer, famous for creating the “one day one item sale” business model. Woot’s main website offers one discounted product each day, often a piece of computer hardware or an electronic gadget.

Periodically Woot announces a “Woot-Off”, a short term frenzied mutation of the product posting procedure. In Woot-Off mode, a new product is launched immediately after the sellout of the previous deal. As the news about Woot-offs goes viral in just a few short minutes, traffic to Woot’s website spikes to tens of thousands of connections a second. These orders-of-magnitude spikes can overwhelm Woot’s datacenter.

Woot.com needed a solution that would not require a massive investment in additional hardware, software, and support. The AWS pay-as-you-go model enabled Woot to choose a cloud based solution over additional capital expenditure. Woot chose aiCache Web Accelerator as a pre-configured instance from the Amazon Solutions Catalog. Woot turned on the instances and moved all traffic to the aiCache accelerators.

Using the flexible caching configuration of the aiCache software, Woot accomplished a caching ratio of 96%. This means that while thousands of requests a second are fulfilled by aiCache, barely any load trickles through to Woot’s datacenter. Woot now uses their load balancer to move all Woot-off traffic from their datacenter to the aiCache instances in the cloud. Once complete, they scale back the instances on Amazon reducing the cost.

“With less than a day’s work total, we were able to configure aiCache for use during Woot- Offs. Our site stays up under the crush, and we’ve saved quite a bit on hardware purchases and time spent optimizing,” said Luke Duff Retail manager at Woot.com. Woot.com was founded by electronics wholesaler Matt Rutledge. Woot debuted on July 12, 2004 quickly becoming one of the Internet’s most successful sites.

aiCache.com helps top-tier web sites scale while reducing cost, enabling mobile aware Web Application Acceleration for the datacenter and Cloud.

So I wonder whether this might change, given the release of Amazon's new ElastiCache product. It looks very promising, and it is extremely simple and easy to use.

Woot, are you going to try out ElastiCache?

Apparently it's fashionable to have a signature.
