Apparently, it uses the surface it is placed on as a sounding board. It also comes in black. Prices on the web are much higher ($40-60).
I did see a few reviews on Amazon, and there may be some issues with the wiring. The reviews comment positively on the sound and tone, especially on wood surfaces!

Coming from an engineer, the speaker and charger both are very cool gadgets. The tech is out of the box and brilliant. I just wish I wasn't on a wine woot kick

Actually, this could be pretty cool, in a useless pico-projector sort of way. It looks like it is a servo-mass driver. It doesn't have a speaker cone, but drives whatever surface you put it on. Pretty cool for $24, but you need a really high power USB port to charge it (think iPad charger).
