Just what I wanted, a $149.00 fan

I just love the explanation of how this works on HowStuffWorks dot com. I quote: "While the tube doesn't have any blades inside it, the pedestal of the fan contains a brushless electric motor that takes in air and feeds it into the circular tube."

Or, in other words, there's a fan in the base. Attached to the motor.

Onomatopoeia. Get used to it.

Um, if there are no blades, shouldn't it be less money that a fan that has blades?

dyson advertises "5 gallons of air per second"
which translates into 40 cubic ft per minute, which is the usual rating for fans

a small desktop fan moves around 150 cfm

Not to start an argument or anything... but I cry foul on your math. According to Dyson, the actual fans (in the base) move up to 5.8 gallons of air per second. So based on that, your ~40 cfm is accurate... but you're forgetting the title of the fan: Air Multiplier According to Dyson, the ring uses physics and "multiplies" the amount of air moved by the fans in the base by 15 times. Which means that it really moves around 600cfm. (If you want the accurate numbers it's 697cfm.)

But ironically, you're still right in a sense: it's flow rate pales in comparison to this $20 fan from Lasko. However, the question is: which one is quieter when moving ~700cfm?

Nothing but a impeller (fan) in a tube (base) with a nozzel. If you look at it one way it sucks, if you look at from the other direction it blows.

Not only does it have blades in the base, it is noisier than a regular fan because the high speed fan in the base is smaller, and works harder.

The ad for this is crap. You can go see these at your local Sears. Yes, the blow air. No, it is not "smoother" than a bladed fan. Yes, it is MUCH noisier than a regular fan.

Sorry Dyson, this is a total FAIL. And the fact that a fairly new product with an original MSRP of over $300 is now on Woot tells me just how bad this product is.

I can tell you this. I've had a Dyson fan at home for a couple of months, and ordered this one from Woot for my office. Presently, I have an inexpensive Lasko fan that is roughly the same size and diameter as the Dyson. There is no comparison, either in air flow or noise. Even with the Lasko on "high" I can barely feel it when it's positioned about four feet from my desk. My Dyson at home is positioned the same distance from my bed and, on its lowest setting, produces far more air flow. With respect to noise, even in the noisier office environment, I have to turn off the Lasko to take or make phone calls. At home, I don't need to do that with the Dyson.

All I can say is that, at least subjectively, I see an enormous amount of difference between a "standard" fan and Dyson's product, and I can't wait for my second Dyson to arrive so I can stay cooler in my office.

Agreed! Purchased two floor fans and a desk fan. Much cheaper and produces much more air flow but they are a pain to clean.

Dyson - failed on this one!

I just got mine and I completely agree with you. This fan is nothing compared to a "standard fan" It's for personal use at my home desk and I love it. The noise is minimal when I just need a steady breeze (I live in Texas) it actually makes considerable less noise than my previous fan.

To all the people who are complaining about a $150 fan, move along. Take your moans and groans elsewhere. Obviously you have money if you are waiting every night until 12:01 to see what great deal you can get off the internet. People just have different tastes and while you really needed that $300 GPS/DVD/Facebook device (not a real thing, just making a point) and you justify it. Well, I justify spending $150 on a very high quality fan and conversation piece.

Quit complaining because it's not an item you wanted. Don't worry, there will be another one in less than 24 hours, I guarantee it!

tl;dr - worth every penny, amazing fan, people need to complain less about product / price when they are waiting til 12:01 for a new deal on the internet.
