My First WOOT purchase and this happens!!

I currently have the Garmin Nuvi 255W and 90% of the time I use the instrument cluster mode (no map on screen, just instrument cluster). Thinking of buying this and finally relenting the Garmin to my wife, who is always taking it. But I don't see this as having the virtual instrument cluster (speedo, trip, avg/max speed etc.) Not to say it doesn't, the Garmin hid theirs prett well too.

Can anybody enlighten me, does this thing have the instrument cluster mode?

There have been reports that TomTom no longer honors this for refurbs. Refurbs often come with very old map versions installed (must keep the cost down), so getting that one free update is very important.

Also, note that TomTom units with model numbers ending in 50 lack some features of the similar units with other numbers. For example, this XXL550 does not have full itinerary planning, while the XXL540 does. There's a link to a feature Reference Guide here that has the details:

http://www.tomtomforums.com/general-tomtom-discussion/21826-tomtom-model-feature-reference-updated-8-20-2011-a.html

Lifetime maps and traffic at this pricepoint was a longshot, so it's not surprising that Woot has corrected it.

An alternate good deal (but not $60 shipped) is the XXL540TM at Buydig.com for $99. That GPS has more features than this XXL550. Here's a link:

So I bought one BECAUSE it had lifetime maps. How do I get Woot to give me a refund? Anyone know?

Where do you cancel an order?

I went into my account but there's nothing there that would allow me to cancel.

Maybe the staff was too burnt out putting together all the descriptions from the woot-off and just did a copy/paste from the higher TM model for this single full day woot.

Gotta be real embarrassing for the proof-readers there. You'd think a company that deals with tech gadgets all the time like this GPS, it wouldn't have happen in the first place.

Glad I held out and didn't pull the trigger too early... saved me the hassle of cancelling.

The mentioned that in the past they emailed all users that purchased it. You should get an official announcement in your email once they get it all straightened out.

And I'm still holding out for the possibility that they simply removed it from the product page so they only have to give the opportunity to cancel to the people that did it earlier in the day IF they find that it's not TM. But if they find it IS TM, then they're adding free features for those that bought it without the description, and fulfilling promised features for those that bought with initial description. If they were getting close to selling out, that would definitely make sense.

Lets say the unit does not have lifetime updates etc... Woot would obviously except refunds for those like me whom purchased it for that reason. BUT what about the possibility that woot could work something out with TomTom to get all of us a code, coupon for the lifetime updates or at least a nice deal on it to help sway us from returning it.

This is of course IF we don't have them and can be open to those that bought it for them.

Just saying...

I'm quite disappointed and went by their (woot's) description.

If they were to give your hypothetical siuation to some buyers, they would have to give it to all.

I sincerely doubt that would happen, unless TomTom gave them that exact wording that has since been changed.

I've never had to or been able to cancel an order, will there be a notification of how to go about that ?

Waiting for that e-mail. And yes I have the original description saved to PDF.

Would prefer to have the option to cancel and not deal with return shipping.

Woot should be able to tell what time the purchase was made and compare that to the time the change in description was made. Then whatever offer they come up with can be made available to those who purchased prior to the "magic" time. This assumes that an offer will be made.

Earlier in the day, a staffer mentioned that in the past *cancellation* has been possible via email to all affected users: http://www.woot.com/Forums/viewpost.aspx?PostID=4636449&PageIndex=2&ReplyCount=219#post4636613

Considering their 2-5 days to get things shipped, probably won't be an issue to get it cancelled before it gets shipped.

You are mistaken. All TomTom models with Lifetime Map Updates have an "M" (or "TM" if they also include traffic data) suffixed to the model number, e.g. "XXL 550TM".

HI folks!
I'm reading all of the threads regarding the availability of lifetime maps and traffic, and decided to add my two cents worth. Some of the threads refer to TomTom official language stating Lifetime updates as "not transferable". Since this is a refurbished model, seems to me that at some point someone bought it and returned it for warranty work. That being said, in my humble opinion I would guess that lifetime maps and traffic does not come with the unit since the original owner would have had to register, and the lifetime TM's are not transferable. This would be corroborated by some who researched refurbished models and stated does not come with lifetime TM.
Would this make sense?

So... since it doesn't have the map updates does that mean you can never update it? Or is it a pay out the nose each month for the privilege?

OOOOohhhhhhHHhhhhhhh I just bought one and re-read the listing and THEY CHANGED IT to no lifetime maps and no traffic. Should have read the comments after I talked about buying one with my wife. Can Woot become a verb like I just got "Wooted"?

Now I need to figure if I keep it for the Chrysler.

equazcion wrote:TomTom makes the best GPS devices, and the 5" XXL's are beautiful.

One thing though: "Easy Menu". Here's a brief explanation.

The 540 model had so many features that some people found the menus confusing (not me, and most tech-heads wouldn't), so TomTom decided that rather than redesign the menu to be more intuitive, they cut out many of the 540's features so the menus would be smaller. They packaged this stripped-down version as the "New 550 XXL with Easy Menu".

This model is cheaper than the 540 because, although it has this "added" Easy Menu feature, that just means it has less features. Just something to be aware of.

Other cons:

- Windshield mount sucks. You need two hands to adjust it, otherwise it falls off. I got used to it after a month. You can get one of those beanbag mounts (Amazon etc) to make things easier.

- Entering your city destination is laggy, cause as you type it searches through its entire database of cities -- and there are of course a lot of them. You have to type one letter, wait for response, then type the next. Avoidable if you enter zip codes instead; also you only need to enter city names once, since after that you can use your Previous Destinations list.

- FM Traffic sucks. You won't get much use out of it. Cellular traffic is the only traffic feature worth getting, and it's only available on much more expensive models.

Pros:

- The screen is big and gorgeous, and the unit is sleek and great-looking in general.
- Lane guidance is excellent.
- Unlike the stupid Garmins, TomTom actually tells you which road you're currently ON. This comes in handy more than you might think.
- Purchasable voices are rather high-quality and entertaining. They're recorded by actual celebrities. Yoda is especially entertaining cause he speaks the directions backwards as in the movies, like "Left you must go" etc. Kids can't get enough of it.

PS. The model with free lifetime maps & traffic is usually called 550TM (as with most TomTom models, there are T, M, and TM variants that come with Traffic, Maps, or both, respectively). This is listed as the plain 550, but the features listed show lifetime traffic + maps. Just cause I like to nitpick. Hopefully it's not a mistake. Edit:I see this question is being addressed, I posted before I read.

Disagree about the mount and FM traffic. My windshield mount has been securely stuck to my windshield for months (since I got the XXL535 from Woot). And the FM traffic kind of depends on the area. I live in the NYC area and have found it to be very accurate. The problem with FM is that it updates at set intervals and isn't exactly real-time, and is reliant on being able to find an FM station that broadcasts the traffic. Plus you need to have the thing plugged in all the time.

My 2 cents for those asking why the big deal on map updates.

I live in an area that has been expanding with new housing developments and streets. You need lifetime updates if you ever want to find an address in any of the new developments.

And for those old established areas, my home town decided to change the traffic flow downtown by changing a bunch of streets to one way. Without updates, someone might have a hard time trying to navigate when it says to turn down what is now a one way street. Just something to think about.

You should already have an email from Woot confirming your order. Just reply to the "service@woot.com" address contained in that email requesting they cancel (and include the order number and your user name as they request). That should do it.

I did the same just a minute ago.

(Waiting for them to add lifetime maps is just wishful thinking. TomTom gets huge profits from these software upgrades and won't be giving it up for free).

I seriously doubt Woot is going to procure free lifetime traffic activation codes from TomTom for all who were duped. They'll have to process refunds. But what about all the people who bought earlier in the day, happily believing their GPS with lifetime traffic and maps is on the way! If they don't check this forum, they'd have no idea...unless Woot does the right thing and notifies everyone.

If an airline goofs up and puts a fare online for $19 that should have been $199 they have to honor it to all that purchased during the time it was incorrect. Should woot not have to honor what they had posted prior to the correction (which by the way they did not indicate anywhere on the site that there was a correction)

My problem with Tom Tom is they charge $150 for map updates. I bought a Tom Tom 70? model back 5 years ago. Got it from Amex Wish List program. Normally $700 for $275. But wasn't worth it after having to do updates every 2 years. I now have Navigator as an app on Droid and updates free.

I agree with this comment. The Tom Tom windshield mount is a royal pain in the GPS. I travel a good deal, so the Tom Tom goes in and out of rental cars. Many times, it won't stay on the window. Plus it is more difficult to position than the Garmin or Magellan. I lent the Tom Tom to my son and he had so much trouble with it coming loose, he lost the suction cup thingy. Now the Tom Tom is dangerous as it slides around the dash. I couldn't find a suction cup replacement on their webpage so I ordered a whole mount replacement from Hong Kong!

I might have missed it but did they ever say if this has the life time updates?

If not does it come with one current update and what does it cost for map updates in the future?

Also, does anyone know if any other GPS makers offer life time maps? I have Garmin and it works fine but I have to pay $60 or so just for a map update.

I may just buy this one if it has a current update instead of buying a update for my Garmin.

Does anyone know how this compares with the garmin 1400 series?

I have this model. It's pretty awesome if you're a bit geeky & don't mind digging into the speech files to correct a few odd translations issues that can happen. Mine would pass an "o" from one file to another in an attempt to pronounce 202 as "two-oh-two". Unfortunately the 2nd file would interpret "o" as French for "West" so TomTom would say "Two-West-Two". The simple fix was to edit the file to translate zeros as "oh" instead of "o".

I also swapped out the Icon so that I see a picture of my truck on the screen :o).
It's still a love/hate relationship with editing speed limits on I25 in Colorado, which are usually wrong... Are Correct Interstate Speed limits too much to ask for TomTom???? It is a tedious pain to manually enter speed limits as each tiny section of road must be selected. You cannot simply select a start and end point... Duh!
All that said... great little unit, but removal of the lifetime updates turns this deal from gold to much less than bronze IMHO.

Hope you find this a "quality" post ;o)

[quote postid="4636963" user="efooter"]I own a TomTom Go 730, and am about to throw it out. I will never buy a TomTom again.

The touch screen on these things go bad, sometimes as soon as a year and a half (which is conveniently outside of any warranty they offer). The device will think you're holding your finger down in a certain spot, and will rapidly cycle through menus until there are no more buttons in the area.

There is no known solution for this problem - people have tried cleaning the bezel, loosening the screws, reformatting the device, taking it out of the sun and in the air conditioning.

I have several different TomTom models from different generations. Last year my Go730 had this issue of the "shifting" screen and when I called TomTom they replaced it with a refurb model three months AFTER my warranty had expired, since it was a known issue. This month my older GO720 developed the same issue. I called TomTom again to see what they had learned about this problem. The TomTom CSR told me the trick about cleaning under the bezel with a business card and it stopped the problem right away. Maybe I was just lucky, but it worked for me, and I was very impressed that TomTom stood behind their product the first time.
