I still check it. I got the latest from talkatone. It's free more stable than before. It imports your google contacts now.

I'll get groove when it shows up as THE FREE APP OF THE DAY IN AMAZON.

Hello fellow YP-G70ites, just checking in for possible new developments. I do like this device better since I finally moved on up to Gingerbread. It's turning out to be a great size (not as small as phone or as big as tablet) and I find myself using it quite frequently. Definitely easier to carry around than a laptop for quick checks of email or other diversions on insomniacal nights. So far no major problems/freezeups/shutdowns. Will be interesting to see if/when ICS (via CM9) comes to this device. Even with prices coming down a bit for similar devices and newer ones having better processors, this ones turned out to fit the bill nicely. I think keeping it in airplane mode has helped with battery life.

Well, there is THIS GUY who seems to be constantly tweaking GB. yp-g70 owners that flash his rom, report bugs to the forum thread and he addresses the in future revisions.

About ICS, that is not going to happen. I don't believe Samsung will do that for an "old" device. ICS is available now on newer phones, I'm sure that Samy techs have moved on.

FYI, if you run the battery to 0, the date reverts to 2005. After recharge, Google market won't work or indicate why, until you reset the date.

For those with Go Launcher Ex, when you switch orientation, does it display some/no icons, until you tap it? This, sound-alive settings, and Wi-Fi strength is why I'm still on 2.2.2.

Kies. Worthless, right? I backup individual apps using Astro and Titanium. Then connect and copy to PC using FreeFileSync.

I recently stopped using go launcher. I find it to be too heavy for this device. WiFi reception seems weaker but I have strong wifi. It is a compromise I accept in return of a working GPS In GingerBread.

It makes sence to loose the date. There is only one battery in the device. Laptops and desktops have that tiny battery to keep the Cmos. I think you have to reset the date after flashing too.

I use ADWLauncher EX, got it cheap during Android market's $.10 sale, and it seems fine. I do notice the wifi signal is weaker with Ginger (at least the notification bar symbol shows it to be so) but I'm able to connect fine where I need to so it's not really a problem for me. Anyone notice Android Market has "gVoice - VoIP Voice Client" for $.99. I have GrooVe IP already and doubt that this one is any better and don't use that much anyway, but, for those that do use this as "phone", might be worth a try. Also, I do agree we wont see ICS coming from Samsung as update, but, we may still see it from CyanogenMod since they have working mods for Samsung Galaxy S2 Look Here if that devices mods are compatible with ours (may not be). I like Ginger well enough so not worried. I've used This for my Nook Color and it works great, but, the Nook has a huge following and development community that I'm afraid the YP-G70 will not have.

Flashing doesn't require rooting. Do you want a step by step?

First get the YP-G70 ready by setting the USB connection to "debugging mode".
Go to: Settings> Applications> Development> USB debugging and check the box.
Remember to use the cable that Samsung included with your YP-G70, not all cables are equal.
Then follow the steps of page 26.
If the links are no longer good, then Google is your best friend.
You can post any other questions, some of us still check the thread.

When I try to go to google market it says no connection retry. I have the wifi on and its conncected to a network but wont open any applications. Any ideas? (Haven't done any of that rooting or flashing or whatever, lol... too complicated for me)Not set on airplane mode.

You are awesome. I've been following this thread off and on over the past several months with the intention of going through every single page to get the gist of upgrading, but the sheer number of pages and posts were overwhelming.

Thank you.

Ever since I got my Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 5" in the mail back late October 2011, I was busy (and still am) getting my feet wet with whole Android framework. Since then, I was able to design and implement a California lottery app. The emulator provided by Google was sufficient to perform functional tests. However, before I published my app to the Android Market, I took the liberity to test it on the actual device. Having said that, the Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 5", running on Froyo, is a great test device. The app execution on the actual device out performs the emulator. No surpise there.

A couple of months has passed now since the purchase, and I still had not flashed Galaxy to Gingerbread yet. Well, not until last week anyway. So, on Friday 24th, I took the courage and follow what's everyone has already done to your device -- flashed to Gingerbread. Don't know where the courage came from, but I am glad I went forward with unthinkable (LOL). Probably, I grew tired of Froyo. Or perhaps, it was just a lovely summer-like day outside in the Bay Area. The result was impressive!

Here are a couple of points about Gingerbread O/S and the procedures Woot user "bobwrit" wrote up.

The Procedures & Software
1. Flash was easy. Just follow what "bobwrit" wrote on page 26.

2. I used Odin 1.85 because the link to Odin 1.3 that "bobwrit" provided is broken.

3. The link to the firm @ rapidshare.com is still active. The file size is about 190MB. My download speed is 6 Mbps. For some reasons, it was really really really slow downloading the file. It took close to 4 hours to complete the download. Please be advised that when you start the download, just wait for it to finish. Do not interrupt the download process by reclicking the download link. If you do, your downloaded file might be corrupted.

Let me know if you having difficulity with the download. I can put it on my server, and you can get it from there.

4. I disabled my device password before I flashed it.

5. I used the same USB cable that comes with the device.

6. I did not reset to factory defaults before the flash.

7. After the flash is completed and your device restarts, you will notice a long wait before you get to home screen. Don't freak out. I did, but luckily, I did not power down the device. I just let do its jobs. I am glad I did. Here is what to expect during the restart. You will see a "Samsung" with black background, then it will show you the splash screen with animation, and then it returns back to "Samsung" with black background. Just wait. It will get to the home screen after a minute.

Gingerbread
1. Performance improvement overall

2. Video playback using bultin media player improves

3. Pictures taken using the bultin camera app also improves -- much better, pictures look a bit sharper

4. Web browsing also improves using the built-in web app

5. I do not use GPS that often, but I did a test using Navigator with GPS enabled, and it seems to work just fine

I am happy with the update. Thanks "bobwrit" and those participate in the forum. It would be nice if Samsung would provide the official update.

The GB didn't go so smooth. I get some errors that people resolved on other devices by going back to stock but I haven't seen some of the stock Froyo and pit files I need to go "back to stock". I think my issue is the partition table. I'll find out soon enough over at XDA.

Soooo, I'm trying to undo the GB update to try and fix things. There's some sort of booting issue and I want to get back to stock to see if that fixes things.

I have a stock Froyo Rom which will do the trick but it doesn't restore the partition table which is changed for GingerBread.

Would someone be able to provide me with a partition table file from theirs if they are still on Froyo? It's easy to do with a program called Heimdall. It downloaded and made a partition file from mine easy enough once I had the right files. I wish I had done so beforehand.

Manually fixing it with fdisk or some such program is another solution though that is more technical digging I have to figure out.

Beats me. What you are trying to do seems too complicated for me. I am of the believe that a straight froyo flash should suffice. But maybe am just not as well versed on your problem. But before you do all that, flash it again with GB and see if that fixes it.

I have a stock froyo rom but it doesn't have the partition file in it. Gingerbread is not working at all as I get errors on boot and the device goes right into recovery mode. I get specific access errors and most people seem unsure what causes this but usually solve it by going back to full stock. Tricky thing is most of these players started as stock as Gingerbread. Ours didn't. The partition table file is different even between the GingerBread US and International players. I believe the emmc chip is not happy with how GB was put on my player and is blocking or not playing nice with the partitions. This has been seen before.

I believe the partitions formats are different between froyo and gingerbread. Getting a pit file outputted from somewhere would be a treat no go so far.

I know it sucks, but, what about a full data wipe and then flash froyo?
I don't think anyone still reading this thread still have froyo.

My first flash went wrong (was using the wrong wire). It failed before starting

and it bricked.

When I swapped to the correct wire it worked.

All I can think of is to check the option box that says "RE-PARTITION" at some point I checked it and I think that took most of the personal setting out of the equation. But Froyo was up and running, then I flashed GB without incident.

What will be annoying is all the re-downloading you will be doing to restore all your apps. Also remember to reset your date and time.

With the stock ROM or the Gingerbread ROM I get this

With a custom GB ROM, I get fewer errors but still this:

CWM is blocked from mounting or wiping the partitions that are the same ones kicking errors. A few windows based Android tools also only access the device when the CWM ROM is on there but still prevent browsing into certain partitions which are the same ones that fail to mount.

In a Nexus device thread, one person wrote this

It sound very similar to an issue a range of HTC devices had that contained a Samsung EMMC. What was happening is that EMMC would not allow certain partitions of the device to written to.

A repartition is the only thing I can't get done to see if that works like others have successfully done. It was repartitioned into GB but I can't find a file that will repartition it back to Froyo. Some ROM files have the file necessary to repartion but the FROYO stock ROM I have does not so if I select repartition, it fails. GB uses ext4 partitions, I believe, and Froyo uses something else. I think I can get it done manually but have taken a break.

My brick was worse than yours. I had no screen and no key combos would bring up recovery or download mode. But there is a program called Unbrickable Resurrector that uses Java and Linux to put code back on that will put it into download mode.

If you can't get the download screen or the messed up screen that I got then It is something beyond my scope of android understanding. Don't see how It could go so wrong, but you seem to be tracking it down. Do your best and don't forget to keep the knowledge base growing here. This is our page.

Hi All,

Not sure if anyone is still trying to figure out how to do a screen capture using this device, but here's how.

1. Long press the Home button until you see the Task Manager dialog pops up.

2. Tap the Back button to dismiss the Task Manager dialog while still holding down Home button.

3. Once the Task Manager dialog cleared (i.e. not displaying on your screen), long press the Back button.

4. With both the Home button and Back button long pressed, release the Home button while keeping the Back button pressed. You will see a message saying that the screen has been captured. The screen capture image is stored in the My files under the ScreenCapture.

Another way to perform the screen capture is to use Eclipse IDE. This is only applied to developers with Eclipse IDE installed on their PC.

Window > Show View > Other > Android > Devices

If your Samsung Galaxy S is plugged in via USB and configured as Mass storage not Kies, you should see the camera icon enabled (not grayed out) for you to click. Clicking it will perform the screen capture.

Hello,

I've recently bought the YP-G70, last sunday (june, 18th, 2012), Kies upgraded the OS from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 GINGERBREAD.XXKPL (kernel 2.6.35.7 se.infra@SEI-27 #2). I tested the compass issue, but the compass is still jumping around and very difficult to calibrate. Even when calibrated, simply moving the device from horizontal to vertical position make the compass go crazy spinning around erratically.

Apparently the compass issue isn't fixed yet after several month of existence. Has any one information on this problem? Does a reliable work-around exist? Is it a pure software issue and every gingerbread YP-G70 device gets affected, or do some people have a fully working compass? (lucky ones!).

regards,

sam.

I noticed samdev's post that Kies updated to 2.3.6, while my Kies insisted 2.2.2 was the latest. So I finally manually updated to Gingerbread 2.3.6 G70XXKPL at 235MB. No loss of apps or data, but had two expected issues. TW Launcher home screen lost landscape, and music player lost bass boost. Landscape solved with Holo Launcher which claims to look & feel like ICS. Cubed player's equalizer brings back some of the range, but lacks the play by folder option. Overall, the YP-G70 is noticeably faster.

One issue was SuperOneClick and DoomLord wouldn't root. I loaded a 2.3.6 G70XXKPF 7MB kernel, and it rooted. DroidWall, Titanium Backup, and ClockSync now work.
PermissionDog spooked me into using DroidWall to block internet access to everything except what I know requires it. Initially, if something stopped working, the DroidWall log indicated what to unblock. Now OpenFeint and others can't phone home. But as a result, I'm missing out on some in-app ads.

On Gingerbread, Text-To-Speech Ivona (Amy) / ReadBoox works. While not of recorded audio book quality, it reads well enough for a commute or hike.

How did you manually update to Gingerbread 2.3.6 G70XXKPL? I have 2.3.5 now that I installed over our original froyo. I'm not rooted. I assume it's not possible via kies since it wasn't before when changing from froyo.
