I just returned my wifi Galaxy Tab 7" because Samsung deliberately disabled it and that especially annoyed me after I could have had the Verizon version (same crippling) for $100 less and with better hardware.

For the record, I started with a gTablet and have moved on. Too many limitations without GPS and camera, and required hacking for just partial market.

can i have your galaxy tab? it's nicely moddable

I love my 32G iTouch BUT 1) the battery is dying because it needs charged almost everyday now (and before could go days w/o charge) and 2) the App Store keeps telling me I need a higher OS for most Apps I want. I'm coming to the realization I'll need a new something eventually. Quandry are the phones out there. Do I want a WiFi device? I like that this has a camera too.

Because people are too good to read the previous pages for information, a concise list of selling points for those who have made it this far:

0: It's a Samsung Galaxy S class Android device. Please note the explicit lack of the word 'phone'.

1: This device is not a phone.

2: This Android device has access to the Android Market. Bring your own connection with wi-fi or turn your cellphone into a wi-fi hotspot so this device can connect.

3: This device requires additional hardware to connect to a cellular network. Namely, your cellphone, turned into a mobile hotspot, because this is not a phone.

4: This device runs Android 2.2, colloquially known as 'FroYo'. Support from the device manufacturer is in question - it may support Gingerbread or newer flavors of Android in the future. No guarantees that it will be Samsung serving up the scoops of new flavor -- as others have noted before me, and as I can attest on my own, Samsung tends to not be very prompt with updates.

5: You notify Woot, not Samsung, of product defects if something malfunctions through normal wear and tear. If your fingers are made of, coated with, or otherwise exude butter-like qualities, consider adding the SquareTrade warranty, and adding the accidental damage coverage. $41 for 3 years is very likely going to be cheaper than replacing a shattered display and its digitizer if you drop it.

6: There are plenty of audio applications for this device that will play the majority of what I think you all will play.
For the general MP3 and Ogg crowd, you will likely be fine with the onboard MP3 player, or might want to use DeaDBeeF, Google Music, or the Amazon music player (of which GMusic and Amazon both support their cloud-based services if you're near wi-fi for this device). DeaDBeeF has support for AAC streaming, which the default player does not. So yes, you can now listen to your Groove Salad streams while you're at it.
For the "I listen to SNES and NES music rips in their original SPC and nosefart formats!" crowd, you'll need DroidSound. Yeah. There's a player for that, you hipster.

7: The wall wart that comes with this and most other devices does a great job at charging the battery rather quickly, but it wouldn't hurt for you to connect the device to your PC overnight for charging if you are the "I leave my desktop on overnight" type. The slower charge'll do you some good, by not heating up your battery with the rapid charging the wall wart's usually capable of.

For the tl;dr crowd:
NOT A PHONE.
IT RUNS FROYO.
STILL NOT A PHONE.
THERE IS AN APP FOR THAT.
BRING YOUR OWN WIRELESS CONNECTION OR MOOCH OFF THE COFFEE SHOP'S WIRELESS, YOU HIPSTER.

Hope this simplifies things.

* edit: that is a very interesting word filter, wootmazon. The Day the Ponies Come Back (2000), meet shattered.

Hey guys,

I've been considering a tablet for a while now, and was thinking of going for the bigger Galaxy Tab (10 incher) and I was just wondering, is the Galaxy worth it? I love Android OS and wanted to know if anyone had any of the Galaxy's and could report

I have the 3G phone version of this phone, and it is the single worst smart phone I've ever owned.

Can't even have Winamp playing while opening or closing Dolphin without the music hitching for a second. Sucks sucks sucks.

But so far, the best 5" phone+tablet has been the splendid Dell Streak 5, which has been discontinued due to excess joy.

I sold my Dell Streak because the screen was just too small and a lot of the fonts were unreadable, even by teenagers, and couldn't be adjusted. Dell's fault, Android phones are better despite still smaller screens.

Lesson - play with the things first.

Man, kudos to Samsung for trying to find a niche in the tablet market, but I want to see their market research findings on this. I am very skeptical of its usability.

It is not portable enough for a person to consistently take with them everywhere like a smart phone. The screen is too small to adequately fill any roles of a tablet (ereader, light productivity,). Wifi only, and it is only marginally better than smartphone at browsing/checking email.

So I guess it for multimedia? I guess it would be neat to take it with you to watch a movie on the plane or bus, but I wouldn't want to watch a 2 hours on such a small screen, and I wouldn't want to take this to listen to music when a smartphone, which most people always have them, is more convenient.

I think this device is going into the tech purgatory. Its like the HP touchpad on woot before HP pulled the plug.

Other then the price difference, how would this compare to the B and N Nook Color ? Is the Nook the better choice for the extra 80 bucks. I realize the Nook is also a bit bigger. Wondering about the internals and likely support.

With Google Voice and GrooveIP this thing should work fine as a phone. Those work great with my Galaxy Tab without 3G service. It should work for this. Fantastically useful for calling back to the US from overseas for free. I'm in for one.

I have the 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab and absolutely love it. It's the same size as a day planner and I used to carry one everywhere. I got it through T-Mobile, but don't have a data plan on it; I just use wifi. I use it for movies, music, checkbook register, shopping list, notepad, etc. It will freeze occasionally and I have to reboot the device, but all in all for the price I paid, I couldn't have gotten a better deal.

Okay, I am going to ask a really stupid question but I am very techno dumb. Do you HAVE to be somewhere that has an internet signal for it to work? Do you have to be a WiFi area? It seems like you do, but my work has no WiFi but sveral coworkers can get internet on their phones and am wondering if they have some special connection. And yes, I know this is not a phone.

This and the Dell Streak 5 make no sense to me.

Why would anyone consider a tablet smaller than 7"? At this size you're better off sticking with your iPhone or Android smartphone.

Sure, it's only $169 here-- but if you already have a smartphone why pay for what you already have?

Not that you want to carry around another device but Virgin Mobile makes a very small prepaid 3G mobile hotspot that you can connect 5 or so wifi devices to. I think it runs about 1.5Mbps.

I've been dancing around the idea of buying an iPod Touch for some time as they've gotten somewhat better since I stupidly decided to buy a Zen X-Fi media player years ago. The thing is barely better than a portable hard drive with their amazingly lousy approach to user interfaces and programming at Creative. The shuffle function can't even work correctly and worked worse before they offered an update. But the iPods barely ever move in price and have some of those Apple quirks I hate. The Quicktime/iTunes software and lack of a media slot.

I perked up when I heard about simless Samsung 3.6 recently. I didn't know about these bigger versions. I don't need a phone very much and there are decent apps to fill that gap or even a wifi/3G mobile hotspot too. Samsung products have been pretty good to me. I've been beating up a Net10 phone of theirs for 2 years now. It finally needed a new battery.

Even Craigslist iPods hardly ever dip below $200. I actually found an iPod Touch in the street recently but the screens were smashed. But I can fix it with $50 in parts.

This Samsung still looks much more appealing to me and so is the price so I Wooted after an hour of consideration.

There are people who'll fix that battery for you if you don't want to pay Apple. The genuine parts aren't too expensive and most of the stuff in an Ipod is replaceable. The battery looks to need a little soldering though. People are constantly looking to buy old iPods on Craigslist that are broken or need something so they can fix and sell 'em.

What is GPS calibration? The accuracy of GPS is controlled by the satellites, I thought. Your accuracy is mostly a function of how many satellites you are picking up to cross check the data isn't it?
