ejeansonne wrote:The GPS is crap. If you find out how to make it connect please post it. I was able to get it to connect one time and DL a simple route. There is an app with some GPS tools that include a working compass and a satellite locator that works very well also. but it seemed to depend on wifi to download the route.

This is pretty basic. The device has "a GPS receiver circuit". That is not the same as "a GPS navigation program". Google Nav (or maybe it is called something different) is one example of a GPS navigation program, but, yes, it will require an Internet connection to download maps and routes on-the-fly as you want them. Others have mentioned an experimental version of that which lets you download the whole set of maps for your route in advance (with an Internet connection) rather than need that connection the whole time you are driving. Otherwise, look for an Android program that includes a nationwide full set of "canned" maps as you would get with a dedicated navigation machine, if such a program exists.

Stock or non-stock, is Chrome less than an ideal browser on these devices? I hear it is taking "market" share away from Firefox, so it must be at least reasonably decent.

Nope. The Android browser is a webkit browser. Chrome is intended for the desktop/laptop/"Chromebook".

If you don't like the default browser, I would consider Opera.

One good thing about being a smartphone user is that I have MicroSDs. I ahve them up the wazoo. I cracked open my abandoned BB Storm, withdrew the MicroSD, and formated the heck out of it. I wil likely never buy a microSD again.

Woo.

That's fine. You probably don't need such a big one, though. A good way to figure out how much space you'll need is to compare how much of your iPod/MP3 Player/smartphone is taken up.

I don't own any of those. I was thinking of the speed of the card, or does it even matter in this hand held devices. How do I check for compatibility?

What is the matter with Sears?

I would hesitate ordering that micro SD card at that price on 1saleaday. There are a lot of counterfeit flash cards out there even from otherwise legit resellers. The guarantees on that particular site aren't that great (exchanges within 21 days and no refunds). That price seems too good to be for a real SanDisk 32gb.

I would wager that you yourself would probably need no more than a 8 or 16GB MicroSD card. Typically, if it's "MicroSD"(which is a size and interface) then it's compatable with the MicroSD slot. You MIGHT not even need one for this particular device. In fact, since you have no frame of reference, I would just load it up with your songs and then see if you need additional space. I wouldn't buy a microSD card until I was sure I needed the space.

SanDisk, Patriot, and Kingston are all good brands. Sandisk is what you see coming with most smartphones. You do NOT need anything that says "extreme" or "Ultra"...those are for cameras which need a fast write time.

(In other words...you don't need a super fast card for this)

That is puzzling, the fedex tracking's most recent action shows mine departing Houston more than 30 hours ago. I wonder where they are sending it that is more than 30 hours out of Houston?

I usually don't buy flash memory online anymore. Had several that just didn't work, and return shipping costs didn't make it feasible to send them back.

That's good info and thanks Skwatch. The device indicates that it is fully charged so I am not worried, just puzzled why the app indicates 80%. I don't need the app so it's not a big deal. I am confident that it is charging properly.

Got mine yesterday. Played with it all night and today. So far, I like it. But it has crashed a few times or froze up after adding some apps. I just have to hold down the on/off switch. A bit annoying. I can say so far, WOW. It is nice to get this without having to pay a cell phone bill monthly. 90% of the time I use WiFi anyway. I got Skype to work and the android apps are pretty good. Netflix works great too. I will buy a microSD car to expand the memory.
I would give this device 4/5 stars. What I paid for it on woot, 5 stars. Great buy.

Is USB charging better, because slower has less heat?

Will a screen covers noticeably impact the electrostatic detection?

Is it worth 20% for a 3 year warrantee, when future devices may have better specs and OS?

Is it worth going case-less, waiting for a $30 aluminum case like this (I'm not from pdair):

I bought one off Ebay at what I think is a reasonable reseller price ($200 plus $5.00 shipping). I missed out on this one. Since I didn't know what it was I started reading the comments and by the time I decided to buy, it was sold out. Not sure what I'm going to do for a case, since there doesn't seem to be much online. I guess I will just wait until I receive it and go to Best Buy or Staples to look for something that works.

YOU NEED TO STOP SHIPPING IN BOXES WITH YOUR LOGO ALL OVER THE OUTSIDE!

Most other companies ship high end electronics in unmarked plain boxes to prevent in transit theft - are you not smart enough to figure that out ?

CRAP! I missed this sale! I can't find these things anywhere! How can woot sell them, but no one else has them???

I teach mobile dev (using Corona SDK) and this device would be GREAT for my class, as Android does not have any real iTouch equivalents.

Is there any where else I can get some of these? Email me: (Mod: Please don't do this - use PM.)

Ah nuts, sorry about that. It looks like you've already emailed in and we (hopefully) got this all straightened out.

I guess you're right about the boxes, but I do recall a certain parent company that also has their logo on all their boxes too.

Just to add my two cents worth, I don't mind that the box has woot written all over it. In fact, they are very visually appealing. It's the shipping label on the outside of the box that lists the items inside that really gets to me. Thankfully, I arrived home very soon after this was delivered, but I am not sure that it still would have been on my doorstep had a passing salesman or teen walked by. The Samsung name alone screams "steal me. I might be worth something"

On a positive note, I am very excited about this purchase and am very glad that you offered it. I have been watching them for a while now, wondering if they would come to the US. Thank you.

I see that you're kind of looking out for us, which is appreciated.
However I have loads and loads of MKV video files (anime and HD movies) that if the Galaxy is able to play, I will be needing the room. Besides, 32GB is the max I can put in it, might as well get it over with.

So... counterfeits hu? who do I trust?
Is there no way to get a killer deal on this things?

Yes, but the "parent company" boxes could have anything. Woot box's contents require less guess work. You know, the one item a day thing?

When was the last Samsung item listed here before the galaxy?

Just received it in Houston 5 hours ago. As of now, what an amazing device! I have owned a iPod Touch 2nd generation and this device almost completely obliterates it. It's super fast, responsive, is capable of carrying out many resource draining tasks at once, and has a beautiful large(took me by surprise) screen and speaker. The GPS works perfectly for me along with the camera. Currently in the process of downloading Apps. The only issues I have are a notable lag with changing songs and a decrease in screen resolution which causes images to appear blurry(but it's still really good).

180$ was an amazing price for this. I'm so happy that this whim of a purchase far exceeded my expectations. Thanks Woot!

Showed up a day earlier then scheduled. Amazing! It's now on the charger. The quick start guide isn't exactly a fountain of information, but the on-line manual seems to cover everything pretty well. Build quality seems very good. Looks like this may be my best Woot ever.

If you have the internet open, cbs sports and netflix it starts to get a bit slow. The device is cosmetically very nice. I also ordered the skinmini full skin I just hope I dint scratch it before It comes in. Ordered the day after from amazon actually and couldn't use my prime. Didnt ship right away though. I bought this device to keep the evo3d out of my hands and preserve its life and battery. To use around the house and when soaking in the hot tub. ( bad back ). And for also taking on my fishing boat on Sundays when I need to check my fantasy football. I can keep my evo stashed away in a waterproof box. I also think many of the universal ipod waterproof containers may hold this as well.. So I think all my needs have been met. I was going to go with the 7 inch when the price dropped some more. but really the 5 inch screen is fine for everything I need.

Do note though the ram status only shows 381 megs and its a single core 1 ghz. So we will have some limitations. And also note the evo 3d dual core 1.8 overclocked with the gig of ram blows it away in overall speed and multitasking.

Adding my penny duo to the SD card talk...even a Name brand can fail, as my 16GB Transcend did, after recording about 90 minutes of video at the 45th Anniversary Star Trek Convention last month! It failed and I was unable to recover the data, after multiple attempts!!
I finally contacted Transcend, who suggested a couple of things...did not work..then they said I could send it to them and they would try to recover the data and send it back to me on another card...in 3 months or so!
THEN I got notified (After I paid to send it to them) by Amazon that this card was Known to be defective!!!!!
So...I will Never use Transcend again! Even If I do get my data. I just don't trust them now.

And....my Galaxy got to Phoenix yesterday about 2pm, and left this morning at 7 for the post office, and I was so hoping it would make the hour trip to Me today, but No! AZ sucks!

Just received mine here in Houston.

I'm very impressed. Not nearly as bulky as i was expecting. Lighter than I thought it would be too. Screen could be a bit more crisp with respect to fonts. GrooveIP works beautifully for making calls over IP (it actually has an earpiece speaker for this purpose). Very responsive. Overall I'm very happy with it.

It will compliment my Galaxy Tab nicely.

im little nervous about my package as well..
