No, if anything I think Kies would interfere with the process.

Did you set the USB to "debugging mode" on your YP-G70?
If not go to:
Settings> Applications> Development> USB debugging and check the box.

Remember to use the cable that Samsung included with your YP-G70, not all cables are equal.

Did you extracted the rar file?
If not, I recommend 7zip. Is free and it expands everything I throw at it. I comes in 32bit and 64bit flavors.

No, I didn't set usb debugging. I used 7zip for the .rar and winzip for the .zip and the original usb cable.

Can I just unplug the yp. The screen with the yellow triangle and the message Not to turn off the target is displayed at the present time.

Went ahead and powered down.
1. set usb debugging.
2. set the unit back to mass storage.
3. followed instructions.

Am now running Gingerbread. Thank you so much for your help.

No problem, easy right?

To future flashers, the message of the downloading screen "do not power down " is so you won't power down during flashing. Is OK to power down the device if you think you missed a step .

I have no use for it. Maybe to keep the Samy divers updated for future flashing.

Now go to Samsung apps and get GoLauncher EX and get that home screen pimped out.

Thanks to continued encouragement I finally flashed to ginger and it's working fine so far. Tried to connect to Kies after flash and I get message that my device is not supported by Kies 2.0. At first it wasn't working since I still had usb debugging checked and googling error told me to uncheck that, but, now I'm still not compatible. I did update Kies when I opened it before hooking up the Sammy, would that have been the reason? Do I need to revert to an older version of Kies or perhaps it was wrong version to begin with (don't think so). Since the flash worked I guess drivers are o.k. so I don't really need Kies anyway. I'm glad there are early adapters still posting here - makes using the device less stressful and more adventurous!

omh1009

quality posts: 7 Private Messages omh1009

Just firmware upgrade through Kies is incompatible.
Media and contact back-up features do still work.
Which is where Kies Sucks royally. So it will be up to you if you want to keep Kies or not.

The (TTT)version is not supposed to have ginger in it (hence Kies not recognizing this ROM as upgrade-able). I believe we have upgraded on our own to a level far beyond what Samsung intends this device to go.
With froyo getting older, support for it will fade. Apps will become fewer. With this flash, we'll get several months more of use over the un-flashed ones.

Now, try the GPS it will blow your mind how fast it is.

Already have it. It's not default yet. I guess that I have to add all of my shortcuts again if I switch. It will be worth it. I do like the revolving door style. Also, should I remove the softkey of the phone?

No, need to load each short cut one at a time. Get DeskMigrate from the market.

the phone soft key is not only removable, it is replaceable. Just drag any app and place it on top of the phone icon. You can also scroll the bottom bar independently from the home screen and add even more apps.

Trying to optimize my device now that I have ginger on it. So, some observations and questions for those more knowledgeable than I.

1) Is there reason to have a task killer? I have been holding home button to access task manager and exiting processes and clearing RAM from there. I also force stop apps not being used (though haven't done that with amazon appstore or android market) and I clear the cache on amazon appstore and market fairly often. Tried Easy Battery Saver+Task Killer but it would constantly shut off wifi while I was using it so uninstalled it.

2) If anything my GPS takes longer to lock than before with 2.2. Could this be the OS version I have Kernel version 2.6.35.7-G70XXXKPF-CL562492492 se.infra@SEP-67 #2. This is what I got when following download directions from pg. 26.

3) And, speaking of GPS, after re-installing Sygic, I notice that it is saying that it is consuming battery (16%)even when off and no GPS enabled and after power down and back on. Googled this and it looks like it might be an issue with this 2.3.5 OS. Never noticed this battery consumption with Sygic off when had 2.2. It may just be a misread of true consumption by 2.3.5, hope so, will see if battery drains faster now. Anyone using the Samsung Navfree app for navigation?

4) Any need for antivirus? Haven't used any yet. I don't use this device for any monetary transactions but are there possibilities of virus corruption of the device?

5) What is best backup method? My device isn't rooted. Looking at MyBackup as possibility.

6) Also, what is wakelock I see in battery usage (2%)? Didn't notice before but maybe just wasn't as observant then. All suggestions appreciated!

Optimize? Don't sweat that crap. Only use task killer for when apps freeze or device slows down.

GPS slower? Impossible, did you test it indoors or outside?
I have not purchased any GPS apps so yes when I have to and WiFi is available I use the Google Nav thing. With GingerBread, I get directions as fast as I can type the destination. With Froyo, it was anywhere between 3 to 6 minutes. And yes that is the same GingerBread Rom as everyone here, test it outside.

Antivirus, I use this:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zrgiu.antivirus&hl=en
It checks every installation. So far all my installs've been clean.

I don't have any recomendations for backing stuff up.
That wake lock thing must be a service for one of your apps, I don't have it.

Thanks omh1009 for the antivirus suggestion. The wakelock went away after power down, charge, kies connect. I did manage to connect to kies since I finally corrected settings for usb to kies. Haven't really used GPS maps yet, just future-proofing for road trips. I have mapdroyd on a nook which doesn't have gps but you can still access downloaded maps to find your way - just no navigate function. I shouldn't say categorically that GPS is slower with 2.3.5, just seemed like it took awhile with sygic when I used it the first time outside in my backyard. The main reason I'm looking at GPS is that it would be nice with this large screen. After connecting to kies, I notice there are some empty "residual" files from my Sammy's previous froyo life that I need to cleanout. Yes. I recently bought a usb bluetooth adapter for my Windows 7 computer, and have tested sending files both ways via the bluetooth connection.

There was a pairing process that involved accepting each device's code and whatnot.

my laptop already has bluetooth adapter built in, and I can get my samsung device to say "paired but not connected". So the device and my laptop can detect each other, but I am not able to send or receive files.

Can you maybe describe step by step what how to send/receive on bluetooth with the Samsung Galaxy Wifi 5.0 ?

I don't know Android either, all I know is the headaches I had with this thing.

Just keep checking the thread, so you can help the next guy who is waiting for the 1 year warranty to expire, so then, start experimenting.

@hwoot I have and older BT dongle which allows me to see and pair my PC in the YP-G70. However, I can't see the YP-G70 on my PC.

I have not made an issue out of it, but to hold you over untill you figure that out, you can use this:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.samsung.swift.app.kiesair
You can mess with your files from your PC's web browser through WiFi.

Edit: you need java installed

To send to the Galaxy, from my PC I go into control panel under hardware and sound/Devices and printers/bluetooth devices, where my Samsung Player appears, I right click and select "control", which opens another dialog box, and where it says "File Transfer", I then browse for the file on my PC.

thank you all for your help,

for some reason there is no "control" option when I right click my samsung device in windows 7 bluetooth devices. I'm thinking it may be due to my bluetooth adapter in the laptop, or maybe it has to do with upgrading to gingerbread.

i guess i'll have to stick with the wifi option for now, or using the usb wire.

I've been enjoying an app called Splashtop Streamer. It allows you to see and control your PC/Mac desktop through your device, complete with sound and video streaming, and is very easy to set up. It's pretty cool to see your complete PC desktop on the little 5" screen and have the ability to control it. I have a job that involves listening to sound files, and it's great to be able to do that with the streamer and get up and walk around with my player sometimes instead of being chained to my laptop all day. I can also watch videos, do edits on documents, or pretty much anything on my PC remotely via my Galaxy. So far, I've only used it on my home network, but if your computer is up and running at home, theoretically you can contact, view, and control your home or office desktop from anywhere (though on a non-secure public network, there may be some risks to your PC security with that).

I got the app when they had it as the free app of the day on Amazon; it's $4.99 otherwise, but it had been on sale recently for $1.99, and I've noticed that sometimes Amazon will offer the same apps for free more than once.

omh1009

quality posts: 7 Private Messages omh1009

oh man, I missed on that?
Damn.
I've been looking for something like that. I've messed with Imperio but could never make it work. Also player around with Vectir, but even though it work, it was very laggy.

I see that you have to download the amazon app store and pair it to (or create and pair to)an Amazon account. I also had to set a payment method, they want to know you can buy stuff even when I'm just going there for the free crap.

I'm not sure I would have paid $4.99 for Splashtop, just because of the fact I would have no way of knowing whether it would work with the media player. Some of the reviews indicate it doesn't seem to work with some Android devices. But it works perfectly with this device, with little or no lag (if you keep the sound turned up on your computer, you'll notice the sound comes to the device just a fraction of a second later). It also has a very easy to use interface for scrolling, optimizing displays, and other options to make the touch display into a kind of mouse for the desktop as it appears on the screen.

omh1009

quality posts: 7 Private Messages omh1009

Kind of a crapshoot, Vectir's lag was when you moved the cursor, it skipped across the screen, it did not glide across in a continuous motion as it's supposed to. Which was just annoying because There was no precision. But everything else was fine. During the trial, I don't remember there being a sound lag, I would had remember that if I had experienced it. I would try it again if I knew how to erase it from my registry.

Imperio was worse, because not matter how faithfully you follow the instructions, could not get it to connect. The screen shots in the guide did not match the actual app set up. Also the are no forums where you can ask for help. You can only submit support tix, wait for email and then get on Teamviewer with them on London time, so F-that.

I'll be on the look out for Free apps of the day from now on. Today's one sucked badly though.

Edit: 10:43pm EST. A little googling gave me the APK. I move it to the YP-G70 With Kies Air. Now, is installed and running.

Pc software required.
http://www.splashtop.com/remote/desktop4windows/download?from=product

I see that when you run it, the Pc screen resolution drops to make it "small screen friendly. It also asked me to go into my audio settings and bring them down to 448000hz. But hey, got it cheap as free.

01/17/12 8:19am Upon further inspection, I see the Splashtop lack features available in Imperio (Wake On Lan) and Vectir (bluetooh, Infrared control and option to turn android into trackpad).

But Splashtop wins, because it actually worked when I installed it and has Mac server software available(F-U Imperio) and doesn't have limited trial timer on the PC software (suck-it Vectir).

Poor bastards, now their APK is out there for anyone with google and 10 minutes to grab. A lot less if you only follow the posted links.

The video play back looks like 24fps. Acceptable I would say. I say this apps is worth $2.50

I've been having a problem with battery life since I flashed Gingerbread. Maybe someone else has solved the problem. If so, I could use some help.
My battery runs completely down, until I have a blank screen. Only after connecting the charger does the yp respond to any button pushing. This happens in a relatively short period of time, (over night). Also, after recharging, my date and time needs to be re-set. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

omh1009

That sounds strange. Charge it and go to:
Settings/About device/Battery use.
to see what is using all the juice.

There are also apps designed for battery management. You may take a crack at those and see which process is doing the draining. We all use different apps after all.

Right now, it looks like an exclusive problem of yours (Yeah, it's a pretty sucky situation). So it falls on to you to carry out the investigation and get to the bottom of this.

If you get nowhere, you can just re-flash it; even back to Froyo if you like. Just remember to post your findings.

O.K. It doesn't seem to happen every time after it's charged. It's happened twice where it appears to be dead but after a charge it comes back to life. But what's weird is the date and time need resetting. The first time it happened, I noticed a 100% charged notification on the notification bar at the top and the battery indicator, next to the time, stayed full green longer than it had in the past. I thought maybe it was a benefit of Gingerbread. Today the battery status and the battery indicator appear normal.

Display - 71%
Android OS - 6%
GPS Status - 6%
Device idle - 4%
Android System 3%
Wi-Fi 2%
ES File Explorer 1%

I'll get an app for battery management and try that. I don't mind having to recharge, I just don't think it's right for the date and time to have to be reset. I'll post back later.

i strongly suggest you to 'freeze' phone.apk instead of deleting it.

there are custom kernel which speeds up yp-g70 further more @xda (havent tested though)

and for resetting time issue could be bad.
in computer world when time resets.. it means either bios chip is broken or internal battery is dead.(not talking about device powered battery)

Woah! You seem to be referring to some deeply sophisticated stuff. I haven't even rooted GB. I assume rooting is necessary to do those modifications.

Here's an update on my little tablet. The good news first. I don't seem to be having the problem with the battery running all the way down and having to reset the clock and calender.
And my 32g. micro sd card arrived. Now the bad news. After I unmounted and removed the old card. I installed the new card. The system asked me if I wanted to format the sd card. I selected yes... It wiped all of my files, that I had added, from the unit. Not that big of deal, I only had one red hot chilli peppers album, about 9 ebooks and 8 or nine movies on it. I just wish they would call the internal storage something other than sd card.

It was set as "mass storage" on the USB settings. I had UNMOUNTED my 4gb micro sd and replaced it with the 32gb card. The message popped to reformat the sd card (yes/no). I touched yes. (I didn't know if the new card needed formatted or not) I got the usual warnings about losing data. After the format of course my media was gone. No big deal for me because I didn't have much stored on the player. I still use my ipod touch for music. I guess I was confused by the system listing an internal and a external sd card. If it would have said "do you want to format the internal sd card" I would have said no. I'll learn android eventually

bluetooth update:

I went to the manufacturer website for my laptop and found an updated bluetooth driver, now I am able to send and receive files with ease!

In the new bluetooth program on my laptop, it says it can connect to the audio of my device and then I can play audio on my device using my computer's speakers.

But the program says: "Please consult your device user's manual for how to initiate audio playback"

Has anyone accomplished streaming audio from the samsung device to PC using bluetooth?

I don't think the cards need formatted either. I thought maybe the system needed to put some folders on the card to organize my media files as they are added.
