In for 1, have an older Dyson which still works great. Moving to a much larger home, so this will be great not to have to drag have a vac on each level.

Are these really worth the money? Spending $179 on a used vacuum cleaner when a new Bissell Momentum is ~$100 seems a bit foolish.

Warning: DO NOT use that scented powder you shake onto the carpet before sweeping. We used to use it with a bag vacuum, and that was fine. After a few months with the Dyson, however, it lost suction and we couldn't figure out why. It ended up clogging the Lifetime HEPA filter that should "never need replacing." We had to go through Dyson to get it replaced since it's an internal part you can't get to.

I bought the (refurb) Dyson Animal two years ago on Woot. That thing still sucks like a $2 hooker, just like the day I bought it.

I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that sheds like crazy as well as a newborn. That vacuum keeps my carpet clean enough that I don't worry about my kid rolling around on it. That's saying something.

I am a big believer in "you get what you pay for" about as much as "you pay for how much they market," but this vacuum really is awesome, all gimmicks aside.

Agreed...I took the Eureka back after 2 months because it sounded like an air raid siren. Some beanie baby beads got sucked into the intake (pretty much impossible to avoid seeing as you have to take the whole thing apart just to empty it). Hated the Eureka...

I bought this exact vacuum from woot four years ago. It still works perfectly. Very well made and easy to empty.

I have had this one for over 2 years, works just like new. I have hardwood in the new house, just turned off the beater brush.

It DOES lose suction when the canister is about 3/4 full. By lose suction, it's only about twice as powerful as a hoover then instead of 3x.

PS I paid 50 on craigs.

nam1123 wrote:What is the "All Floors Control Knob" that is so prominently featured in the photos? Is that to turn the brush bar on and off, or does it actually adjust the height of the vacuum head to accommodate different surfaces?

If it's for surface height, I hate it! All the good vacuums I've seen, including Dysons, will auto height adjust through some clever physical/mechanical design so that you never have to think about differences in carpet height/plushness.

Can anyone who owns this give me an answer? I'm in if this is not a manual suface height adjuster.

That knob is just to turn the beater bar on and off for carpet/wood floors. It auto adjusts its height when you get ready to vacuum. I've had one for 4(?) years now and I love it.

I manage a vacuum store and Dyson makes the best bagless vacuums on the market hands down. This model has been discontinued but it is a still good machine with high suction and an aggressive brush roll for picking up pet hair. However, I would not recommend a Dyson if you have primarily hardwood floors or if you are sensitive to allergens. Dyson vacuums have plastic wheels which can scratch or other wise damage hardwood floors, it's best to get something with rubber wheels. Also, since it is bagless the filtration isn't going to be nearly as good as a comparable vacuum with a bagged system.

Bottom Line: This is a great vacuum at a great price if you have mostly carpet and especially good if you have pets.

equazcion wrote:It bothers me the way it's become accepted to use the word "carpets" with the plural S at the end whenever it's the object of the sentence. What happened to the word "carpet"? The only time I hear it now is as a descriptor, like "carpet cleaning".

Has the world gone mad? Or just me?

I think people mean it in the sense that they have multiple separate carpets in different rooms. I have carpet in all my bedrooms, but the adjoining spaces (living room, kitchen, etc) are all hard wood. So each room is completely separate. So it's proper to say "I'm going to vacuum the carpets" or anything similar.

I do not like the ball at all compared to this model. The cord is much shorter and the canister is smaller. I do, however, like the maneuverability.

I can throw another recommendation out there... I too bought this same model about 5 years ago from Woot... (refurbished as well) and it still runs great! If you're on the fence I'd say go for it. I dont regret my choice at all.

Your understanding is wrong. One, it says so in description on Woot it has one and two, I just got mine in the mail and used it today. It does have the motorized beater brush and works well.

How does it work overall? Yep, Dyson sucks. After all...it IS a VACUUM!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Get it?!?!

It really sucks! and thank god it does too!

I am thinking of buying one of these but have a question. I haven't purchased from Woot in a while and in the past I have been charged tax since I live in the great state of Texas. Today, it's not showing tax. Does anyone know the reason for this?

The tax did show up on the last page after all. I guess it was just wishful thinking.

Mine from the last woot-off showed up yesterday. Works fantastic. We had vacuumed the day before (have two large area rugs and otherwise all wood floors) so we were a day away from doing it again.
I was shocked at how much more it pulled out of our rugs. Granted, some of that is "wool fuzz", but plenty of dust and more hair was pulled, too.
I've noted that some feel this vacuum is loud, but I don't find it to be anymore loud than the Eureka we have.
Couple notes:
One, a retractable cord would be nice.
Two, the hose works good in theory, but I don't care for the overall design. Not a show stopper, but I'd prefer that it wasn't part of the handle and had that long aluminum tube.
Overall, this is clearly a superior machine with a very powerful motor. Full retail? Not sure I would pay that much. 179 from Woot? Absolute no-brainer.

Have a DC14 that is still going strong after about 7 years. I have moved, taken it to work, and generally used it in situations that called for a shop vac...... it is still going strong. I have bought a Dyson for both DILs and they love them. We are all pet people.
Now I have bought one today for work. I will never have to haul mine there again to have a good vacuum. You cannot beat these! Carpet, tile, hardwood - I have them all and these are amazing and keep going.

I keep wondering that too. They must have many, many that suck in a bad way. For the price of a new one, how many people can afford that, and it looks like they all break.

Questions:
How maneuverable is this one as compared to one with a ball? That's why I constantly kick and scream at my Kenmore because I have a lot of furniture obstacles. Even an exorcism did not get rid of it's evil spirit.

How well does the hose stretch for stairs. I once was holding a vac with a short hose while cleaning the stairs and dropped it. The bottom part got stuck on my head as it wrapped all my long hair around the beater bar. It took a lot of panic to get off the steps with that thing on my head.

chgo wrote:If they're so great why are there refurbished ones to sell?

Refurbished doesn't necessarily mean it was broken - manufacturers also sell as refurbished products that were opened and returned but not necessarily ever used. Yes, I know some places classify that as "open box" merchandise, but not always. With a vacuum that is as pricy as these are at full retail, I can't say I'd be surprised if many of these were returns by people whose spouses balked at the idea of a $400+ vacuum.

That all being said, I don't currently own nor have ever used a Dyson vac, so I cannot comment as to their quality beyond what I've heard from others I know that own them - and this has me currently pondering buying in on this.

I don't really know, but this is a conspiracy theory I have:

Secretly Rick Perry's campaign hacked Woot and they're taking all the tax money to use for guns to protect the border and a new death chamber for inmates whose time is up.

(Sorry, had to throw a little Perry Texas politics in there.)

Yes, they are reliable. When I rec'd my refurbed Wooted Dyson a couple years back, it arrived unopened, new-in-box. Keep in mind, any time a customer returns a product for any reason - even if the box is unopened, it has to be sold as a 'refurb.' If they ARE refurbed, they have received hands-on, one-on-one care that probably makes them better than new. Buy with confidence. No, I don't work for Woot or Dyson :-)

I got one of these from a store hoping to replace my Hoover with a better vacuum. I miss my Hoover. The hose that comes out of the vacuum to get to smaller places with the attachments is VERY HARD to use. I pull it out and it fights me every inch of the way to cleaning.

With all due respect since you manage a vacuum store, I heartily disagree. I have all hardwood floors in a two-story home, with a few scatter rugs, and I love my Dyson! The wheels have never 'scratched' my floors, and I love seeing it suck up the dust / pethair / cobwebs, making the floors look great. This is one of the nice things about the Dyson - the hardwood floor ability!

The main difference between a Regular vacuum and a so called Animal vacuum is that the animal version has a carbon filter on the air exhaust to help reduce odors

dbzeigler wrote:How does this compare to a Rainbow? We're kind of tired of the hassle of the Rainbow, being a canister and using water to trap dirt and debris.

My mom still uses her Rainbow from around 1985. She has absolutely refused to upgrade to a different model all these years because the Rainbow still works magnificently - she uses it for floors, furniture, curtains, and dusting.

I've taken my DC14 (a refurb, not bought at Woot) out to her house a few times, so she doesn't have to go through the big production of using the Rainbow when she's also making a holiday dinner. I'd say this model and her 80s era Rainbow work about the same, but since the Dyson is so much easier to use, clean, and store, I prefer the Dyson.

After seeing my sleek & sexy Dyson during the holidays, Mom became jealous and finally admitted that she wouldn't mind leaving the rigamarole behind and breaking it off with her Rainbow to cohabitate with a younger model Dyson.

I am checking my budget (and seeing if my sister will contribute) and may be buying one of these for her today.

I'm wondering about two things that I haven't seen mentioned [though admittedly, I haven't read *every* post in this discussion]:
1) How does Dyson do on upholstered furniture? 2) Does it tip over easily when using the wand?

Those are the two areas where my beloved Bissell fails miserably.

Thanks for your input!

The one I bought during the woot off arrived yesterday. It tried to suck the paint off the tiles. This is a referb so it only has a 6 month warranty. But this is $50 cheaper than the other referbs I found. The Dyson we have in the office has worked flawlessly for more than 5 years. This Dyson 14 fixes the only problem the office one had.
