IDEA: Get sharpies, actually make a rubix cube.

Other idea: buy multiple sets, make HUGE rubix cube.

You can turn sections just like a regular rubix, so why not?

If these only have one pole, I'd buy the entire stock. Millions of dollars have been spent but the elusive magnetic monopole is still in the realm of the theoretical...

Even SHeldon Cooper failed.

And you get two monopoles per cube. The attracty kind and the repelly kind. Just need to cut that little bugger in half.

Seriously now.
I will be posting an Instuctables on building your own mouse/finger sized MRI shortly after these babies arrive. I was going to use buckyBALLS, but they were too appetizing and I ate them.

anyway...
I have long been waiting for woot to do the double bucky-balls deal again.
I bought it once here, but that happened to be on the 1 gold, 1 black finish combo, and the finish on both is flaking/rubbing off (more so the black ones) so I don't really use them any more. I've been just aching to pick up two sets in the normal finish, so for about 5 seconds this woot REALLY got my hopes up.

*sigh*
Just not really interested in the square ones though. But still a great deal for anyone who IS.

AMEN. The combo of the jazzy/clappy/cheesy/high energy music with a block of tiny magnets some hands are folding over and over seemed a bit disproportionate. For me it was like using Also Sprach Zarathustra to soundtrack a presentation of nuts & bolts (though I use nuts & bolts way more than magnets).

Although I was never considering purchasing these. I don't get why people like these things. I mean, I'm glad y'all like them and are getting a great deal, but the excitement over them has bewildered me. When I saw the deal of the day, I just rolled my eyes. Especially when I saw how small they were!

I've gotta be missing something... someone sell me on 'em w/ideas of using them in more imaginative/entertaining/useful ways. I do really like magnets, I have a few, they're damn handy (my favorites: my magnetic dish and telescoping magnet wand; my unobtained want: a magnetic floor sweeper). Do people that buy these really end up playing with them more than a couple times? I feel like I'd end up using them as fiddly little refrigerator magnets. Are they particularly strong?

Maybe I'd send them all to someone, but only five per envelope, all on the same day. I'd feel bad for the postal carrier though.

Ah, if it was only so intuitive and easy! Those little buggers end up with N and S poles no matter how small you cut them. So each halved magnet will remain both attracty and repelly. It's one of those magical things that cannot, and should not, be explained.

ps - you can explain it with quantum physics, but what's the fun in that?

I bought the two pack of the Bucky Balls when they sold them last year for before Christmas and my son still plays with them to this day.

I hope these don't get away as easily as the balls. If you dropped one you were done if you couldn't see where it went.

I would imagine these won't roll as well, but I won't assume anything here until that package arrives!

From the product description:

F@%^in' magnets, how do they work?

Not like that. I'm pretty sure that each Buckycube has two poles, one north and one south. Each pole can attract or repel. Poles attract their opposites and repel poles of the same type. Both poles will attract ferromagnetic materials like steel. If Woot! were selling magnets with a pole that repelled all metals, somebody'd be about to get a Nobel prize. As it is, whoever wrote the product description is in danger of winning an Ignobel prize.

What with China controlling the supply (for the next few years) and jacking up the price of rare earth metals, these will only appreciate in value. Forget the dive in gold prices, invest in rare earth buckyCubes and sell them on the black market to people that want to make electric motors. Next week I expect a Woot on platinum bullion!

Be SURE to watch the video so you don't make the mistake I made with Woot's Buckyballs. I was naive enough to look at the featured photo and conclude that it was accurate. Then I bought them, discovered how TINY they were, which has issues of safety with animals and kids, and required extraordinary dexterity to use. When I tried to return them based on misleading advertising, Woot told me, basically, "caveat emptor", since I "could have watched the video".

That's a good point. If these are in fact 4mm cubes then the full cube of 125 magnets is only about 0.8" cubed. These are way too small for my huge hands to be able to accurately manipulate. If these are neodinium and as powerful as other buckballs can you imagine the mayhem that would ensue if a child/pet were to ingest these?

Accurate? "Each Buckycube has two poles – one side repels, the other attracts".

Find me magnets that fit that description. I'll stick the side that attracts to the bottom of my car (easy since it's attracted to it) and let the other side repel the Earth, creating a levitating vehicle.

Oh, that's not how magnets work, now is it? Real magnets have poles that each repel one kind of pole and attract the other kind of pole.

Get new ones! When my Buckyballs started loosing their finish I called the company and they sent me a new set for free, postage paid. They didn't even have me send the old set back.

Does anyone know how many sets I need for the attraction force of the magnets to overcome the ability of the magnets to maintain their shape, thereby creating some sort of magnetic black hole? Will 3 be enough?

I love buckyballs, so naturally I'm in for two. The only downside to buckyballs is degrading finish. I wonder if buckycubes finish integrity is any better.

Love my Buckyballs, these seem fun but I have two sets of balls already so no real need for these.

Plus I don't think I could roll these around in my hand as easily as I could with the balls, which is the main thing I do with them.

If the finish is flaking off, you are spending too much time alone playing with your balls. You need to get out more...before you go blind.

MaxSMoke777 wrote:I actually bought 250 1/8" Cube magnets last year, just because I thought they would be more fun to play with then round Bucky Balls. I guess they finally figured that out too.

I stick them to the outside of my stainless steel business card case. Then, when I'm bored at a bar or wherever, I build towers using the business card case as a base. Never fails to draw interest, and everybody wants to play with them. They are less like jewelry, and more like tiny building material. You also have to be more aware of polarity.

The cubes I got cost about $50 or so, shipped. That was for 250. So this is a competitive price, but not exceptional. Mine didn't come with a logo green plastic box though. lol

It's half the cost, I'd say that's pretty competitive.
How do you actually play with something so friggin small tho?

Every time I see Buckycubes or Buckballs I imagine the trip to the emergency room after my 2 year old eats a few of them.
The disclaimer on the item just reinforces that feeling.

I've always regretted not buying the Buckyballs, especially around Christmas when I can't think of a gift for nephews or brothers-in-laws. This year I'll be prepared with the cubes.
