You and me both! Doesn't matter what it is if it glows in the dark! I'm wearing glow-in-the-dark nail polish right now and think it may be the greatest invention of all time.

It's fun to cut these open and splatter the liquid on stuff.

Too bad it stops glowing after like an hour.

Unless you have a black light.

Expiration? LOL... No. Now, owning them for that long can result in accidentally cracking one up when you hadn't intended to. I do know that with time they become more sensitive.

sdc100 wrote:Here's a helpful hint:
If you don't plan on using these quickly, put them in the fridge or freezer. They'll have a much longer shelf life. I had a glow stick in my freezer that still worked 10+ years later.

I haven't verified this but I believe you can also extend the glow time by freezing. More specifically, I think you can stop the glowing by freezing. In other words, if you only need it to glow for an hour, I think you can stop the chemical reaction by freezing. That way, you can reuse it at will by defrosting until the chemicals are completely spent. Again, I haven't verified this but have heard about it from friends. And it does make scientific sense.

I can attest to this. I have been alive and have kept my youthful appearance since the 1600s. I owe my longevity to sleeping in subzero temperatures every night.

The oxidation of a fluorescent dye by Hydrogen Peroxide. That's how the F they work (Note that I am neither lying nor attempting to get you pissed)

The Glow Stick Song
(To be sung while swinging one of these colorful beauties on the darkest of nights.)

Shine little glow stick, glimmer, glimmer
Shine little glow stick, glimmer, glimmer
Lead us not too far we wonder around the back yard here and yonder.

Shine little glow stick, glimmer, glimmer
Hey, there don't get dimmer, dimmer
Light the path below, above and lead us on to fun!

Glow little glow stick, rod of color
Glow like a rainbow never duller
Glow through the darkest night, easy, turn on the AC and the DC.
This night could use a little brightnin'
Light up you little ol' stick of lightnin'
When you gotta glow, you gotta glow glow little glow stick, glow.

Glow little glow stick, glow and glimmer
Swim through the sea of night, little swimmer
Thou polystyrene stick of chroma, illuminate yon woods and girl friend Mona.
See how the shadows deep and darken
You and your chick should get to sparkin'
I got a gal that I love so--glow little glow stick, glow

Glow little glow stick, turn the key on
You are equipped with pretty neon
You got a cute long lanyard
Which you can take off and on to
I don't know who you took a shine to
Or who you're out to make a sign to
I got a gal that I love so--glow little glow stick, glow,

Glow little glow stick, glow,
Glow little glow stick, glow,
Glow little glow stick, glow.

Actually, glow sticks are pretty much non-toxic. That doesn't mean you should *drink* the stuff - remember, they use Hydrogen Peroxide as a reactant, and it will have tiny glass shards in it - but it won't kill you...

Of course, the stuff also stains like you wouldnt believe.

When I attend conventions, I can be found cracking open a few glowsticks (usually the much larger ones, these little guys aren't worth it) and pouring the contents into a cocktail glass. I then wander the party floor with my 'beverage', to the amazement of all.
The following conversation is repeated many, many times:
"Whoa, dude! What is that?"
"Mountain Dew and Plutonium."
"What?"
"Just kidding. It's glowstick fluid."
"You're not *drinking* it are you?"
"Well, it *is* non-toxic, but no, it's horrible."
"Can I try some?"
"Umm.. well, ok, but let me warn you... It's got a bittering agent - that means it literally tastes as bad as they can make it. It's also oil-based, so don't do more than dip your fingertip in. That way you also won't get any bits of glass from the tubes..."
(person dips finger, tastes)
"Gah" (gag spit) "Oh, that's HORRIBLE!"
"I *did* warn you..."

Every. Single. Time. Even the people who see their buddies sample it *still* want to try it... Sigh.
