I got a much older version of the Flip (not even HD!) from Woot years ago. Pretty much outmoded by my DroidX camcorder function but it is handy to have for quick and dirty youtube videos.

Kids these days are lucky and boy have we come a long way! I paid $99 for my PXL-2000 in 1989. Recording on a 90 minute audio cassette tape got you about 7 minutes of video recorded.

I second that notion! I've been on Woot for several years and never seen them do this before. I wonder if they will offer us a $20 refund or credit??

These are excellent Video camera's - the 60fps produces a great video and the microphone picks up a surprising wide range of sound and seems to automatically compress very loud sounds to minimize any distortion. The editing software that comes with Flip is nothing special but is very easy to use and can quickly produce a final video from your rough video. All in all a very very good deal at $40.00

It's a risk you take for buying a product that isn't selling well, and highly publicized as discontinued (Cisco is basically selling what's left; no more are being manufactured). The news scares away potential buyers. With Smartphones taking better and better videos, all palmcorders will all soon face discontinuation or being relegated to a niche product.

If Woot had had more HP Touchpads, a similar thing would have happened.

Your best bet is to print out this Woot, and submit it to your credit card and see if they offer Price Protection. Many card will refund the difference if you see a lower price within a month or so. SO make sure you print out the Woot before it changes, because the current price will disappear.

Buyers in TX, WA and NY should remember to use coupon code: TAXSUCKS to get a $5 discount. With the coupon, you guys will actually end up paying LESS than people living in states where Woot doesn't collect sales tax. That's because the tax you pay on $40 is less than the $5 you get back.

Bye ... time to get back to the lab.

Cisco purchased this company from Flip and was about to release the latest version of the Flip when they killed it. The Cisco stock was taking a beating when the stockholders told Cisco to dump all non Cisco investments, Flip being one of them. I have to assume they had a warehouse full of these things and this is what Woot is offering. I had purchased a Vado brand awhile back and have been satisfied with it. I think the Flip one is a bit better. The previous Flip version had great low light capability and the sound was excellent and it works with the Mac. Can't be beat at the price.

1) It is not expandable
2) More importantly, you can't remove a memory card to download,
3) Most importantly, since Cisco has discontinued the Flips, support will be non-existent in the near future.
4) Again, unique among handcorders, Flips DON'T TAKE STILL PHOTOS!!!
5) The famous Flip USB arm is a stupid feature because it is delicate and non-replaceable.
6) You cannot adjust the resolution or frame rate,
7) Finally, like all palmcorders, you can't pause during recording. All in all, the Flip is a poor choice that's more form than function.

I would say this is a quality post. On the other hand, image stabilization and decent quality sound for $40 is still a good deal, no?

Wow, you really should examine your anti-Chinese obsession. Where did I mention anything about preferring a cheap Chinese palmcorder? It's sad that you need to defend the Flip solely by comparing to generic Chinese stuff. Nowhere did you mention the Kodaks, Vados,. Bloggies, etc even though I did. In other words, you think that the Flip is in the same class that those Chinese junk.

Speaking of obsessions, you may want to take a look in the mirror. While I read and appreciated your initial posting with the disadvantages of the flip, you've continued to rant on about it for 6.5 - 7 hours now. Let it go already!

You've made your points. I still bought one. Why? Because I'm not buying this to be my primary video recording device. It's small and easy to use. Great for having on hand and taking quick video clips.

For $40, I have a very user friendly camcorder that I can use in a variety of situations where having my regular, featured filled camera would simply not be convenient.

Your continued postings that hammer away at the product make me wonder if you were once on the flip development team and were fired for some reason.

Thank you for your very informative initial post. Now, move along and stop clogging up the discussion!

Which would explain why you never hear of anyone getting their iPhone for an awesome deal or getting their iPod for 15 percent off.

You can get Apple products at a discount all the time. First, you can go through the Education Store if you have a school connection or know someone who does. Second, if you have a friend who works at an Apple store, they can get you somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-25% off every day, depending on what you want . A friend of mine who works for an AS mentioned this to me. You get more off if you order in store vs online, I think. Third, Apple's refurb stuff is consistently excellent, indistinguishable from new in my experience, generally has free shipping on their website, and at a discount vs new.

Plenty of ways to get discounts on Apple stuff if that's what you want. I believe my friend quoted me 20 or 25% off an iPod touch, new.

With all due respect, having an 'in' or buying used isn't really the same as having an occasional sale.

I like this deal, ordered one unit. I have a Canon 5D Mark II, which is awesome for HD video (although the buit-in mic is terrible, FYI), but I would never dream of mounting the 5D on the handlebars of my bike and riding around NYC with it.

A $40 Flip, on the other hand, is perfect to put on my bike! Stoked! And shopping for a good handlebar mount. Anyone have a recommendation? Tons of different parts on ebay, but I'm never used one before, not sure if there's a "best" one.

With all due respect right back atcha, I'm merely pointing out that it isn't hard at all to get a discount on Apple stuff. It isn't like it's rare to know someone who's in school at any given time. I wouldn't consider that some impossible to obtain "in".

BTW, refurb doesn't necessarily mean used. The item could well have been returned, never opened, and they sell it as refurbished. Have you ever purchased a refurb Apple product? I have, multiple times, and have a fair amount of friends and family who have also done so. Without exception, the item is as new, perfect. You couldn't tell any difference. Now, maybe in your head it's used, but I challenge you to find any physical or functional difference aside from a neuron or two in your brain screaming "new" or "used". If you want to pay 10-20% more to satisfy the craving for "new", feel free. Make sure to return it, unopened, so that I can then buy it for 20% off. Thanks!

As for a traditional "sale", compare that used iPod or iMac to a used Sansa MP3 player or Dell desktop regarding resale value. It's like a Honda Accord vs. a Chevy Impala. Sure, the Impala probably has a rebate on it, but with 100k miles on it, the Accord has a much higher real world used transaction price. Initial purchase price isn't all that makes up a deal. If you can sell something later for 50% of what you paid vs. 10% of what you paid, the more expensive item might actually be the better value.

Anyway, enough on the OT subject. Sorry, everyone, but it had to be said. Peace, out.

What happens then , when you upgrade to WIndows 8? It may not be compatible with this Flip. With any other recorder, you can simply remove the memory card and copy the files. No such luck with this. If this Flip is not recognized over USB, you'll need to find an older computer to download.

Great post!

#3 was a very good point. I can still use my 1999 Fuji camera (Model MX-1200) because I can take the memory card out and load my photos onto the computer. If the camera did not have the removable card feature, it would have become obsolete years ago because it uses the old serial port, a long gone feature in most computers. And windows XP would not recognize the drivers even if I had a serial port (I tried it on a XP machine with a serial port). I like the camera because I can take nice photos of very low size (50kb) without having to go into a photo program to lower the size manually. This saves me a LOT of time because for my use, the small size is what I want, I insert the image into an Excel file and there is no real difference between this 50kb photo or if I used my 10 mega pixel camera which takes a low of about 3mb photos, way to large for my storage purposes.

I got my son a non-HD Flip Ultra a couple years ago and he has not treated it too gently, but it still works great. I don't know about this version, but I have been impressed by the Flip quality.
It is best for taking videos that you want to share easily. It is not ideal for advanced video projects that require editing, etc. My son stopped using his Flip when he wanted to start doing green screen, multiple effects and so on. But if you just want to put together clips with basic titles and background music, the Flip software works fine for that.

sdc100 wrote:Yes, if Flip was the only palmcorder out there. But you have many choices these days: Creative Vado, Kodak z series, SOny's Bloggie, Sanyo Xtcl, JVC's, etc. So when talking about choices, you have to take everything into account and the Flip is possibly the worst choice of all name brand palmcorders because of its basic limitations and shortcomings.

All those features you mentioned are present in the other models too. In fact, some have better zooming (the Sanyo has optical zoom), better stabilization and wider lenses (the Vado).

I have a video recorder, digital camera, AND a Flip ULTRAHD which I LOVE! Ok here is the thing, if this is going to be your only video camera then you might want to consider something else, however, if you want something that can capture a couple of seconds or minutes of video at a time (like you child losing his first tooth) grab this now!

As a grandparent, I bought this because it is SMALL, LIGHT WEIGHT, EASY TO USE, GREAT VIDEO QUALITY and can be hooked up to almost ANY COMPUTER to SHARE VIDEO. I wouldn't trade mine for anything, I liked it so much and so did my son, that I got him one last year as well.

This is small enough to keep in you purse or pocket and convenient for those unexpected moments. By the way, I bought the wall charger adapter at Best Buy and prefer to charger the camera that way.

I made a few points that may or may not help:

http://www.woot.com/Forums/viewpost.aspx?PostID=4659931&PageIndex=2&ReplyCount=111#post4660123

Also, @sucker4crap pointed you can reorient video from Flip in iMovie:

http://www.woot.com/Forums/viewpost.aspx?PostID=4659931&PageIndex=2&ReplyCount=114#post4660201

Also just googled it real quick. Here's an article from last Sept that compares the two side-by-side:

http://gigaom.com/video/side-by-side-flip-ultrahd-vs-iphone-4/

My personal opinion is if you've been thinking about getting one then get it. It's $40 and you don't have to worry about someone calling in the middle of you filming your kid taking his/her first steps or whatever it is you're recording.

My main concern now is the duration; if it can take one hour max...

Each round is max. 99 seconds (1.65 minutes).
Each match is max. three rounds (297 seconds, 4.95 minutes).
Each set is max. three matches (891 seconds, 14.85 minutes.

That means that I could potentially only record four sets. Should I buy two? Or, for $80, am I better off getting a better camera and a bigger SD card?

EDIT: And, I heard a rumor that 99 seconds in Street Fighter is actually like three "real" minutes. Google is yielding no help on this last one.
