I have an aversion to Singer machines. They are not what they once were IMO. My old one drove me nuts so I purchased the Brother C6000i and it works like a champ with a ton of extra feet.

I went to visit the kiddos for the arrival of my first grandbaby and they needed a machine and lessons and grammy was there to the rescue. I bought them a Singer in the $200 range and as I was demo-ing the machine at the house, I couldn't get the feed dogs back up once dropped. So we went back to the store to return it and the display model had the same malfunction. The store happily refunded my $$ and I bought them a $200 Brother instead. I was roped into sewing a Halloween costume for the baby on my last visit and their Brother worked perfectly again.

Blondes aren't dumm.

If you don't mind refurbished, there seems to be a better deal here:

http://www.internetsalesusa.com/singer-fashion-mate-7256-sewing-machine-r/

It's a newer model for $143 and free shipping.

This is not the same machine. The one you got with the serger is the Perfect Finish.

Totally agree, though I switched to a Kenmore instead. I learned to sew on a Singer from the 70s, and the new ones are kind of a disappointment.

Also, how many people ever end up using all those decorative stitches? I'm pretty wary of cheap machines that try to do too many things.

Can anyone say if Singer is actually worth the price premium over Brother? Will this machine be more robust, reliable, and long lasting?

I come from a long line of Singer users and I can tell you that if properly maintained they last forever! The one I have currently is over 30 years old (and still works great) - I'm buying this one as a treat to myself because of all of the built in stitches.

Just what the community needs, another thread for sewing.

I feel like this should be on home.woot and home.woot should be here. (Maybe woot's just stringing us along with a deal like this?)

Abandon that box of chocloates and flowers for her birthday. Nothing says "I Love You" like a new Singer (and perhaps a Dyson for good measure).

And on that note, I'm going to hold out for the Woot Overlords to offer this with the serger again. I have neither and would love to buy them in a set. For folks who plan to make their own clothing/costumes/cosplay outfits, the two together really will make a polished outfit.

How hard is it to thread? I bought one a few years ago, and my grandmother could thread it, but I never got the hang of it.

I'll buy a sewing machine in a heartbeat if someone knowledgeable can opine. Someone said "somewhat tricky" -- doesn't sound encouraging.

I want to make some curtains, draperies, and sheers.

a sewwwwiiinng machine ??? booooorrriiiinnng

but for those, who asked: Singer is a brand name and usually they are well built.

Some reviews over at Walmart (also, $189 + tax there).

Common theme in the reviews is that threading is very difficult. Even the 5 star reviews says threading was very complex.

In light of that, I think I'm going to wait for a deal on a machine that's easier to use. I want to make some curtains, but I haven't sewed anything since Home Ec class in high school. D:

It says it has an automatic threader. I don't know what that means, but I am tempted to buy it for that reason alone. If you thread a machine wrong, you are in trouble from the get go. When I first got my 50 (yes 50) year old White machine I thought it was broken, so I took it to the repair shop. She charged me a 10 dollar booooo fee and showed me how to thread it right.

Newer machines tend to be easier to thread anyway, even without an "auto-thread" feature. Of course, anything will make a straight stitch for curtainsj, as long as you know how to thread it. I bet the hemming stitches in the 100 stitch collection are sweet, though.

I am a Kenmore girl. I learned on one in the mid 70's. I still have it and it works like a charm!

I am very wary of a machine that is too cheap and does too many things. Just remember, with mechanical things, you get what you pay for... well I guess with anything that rings true too.

In my experience, Singers are much more durable & longer lasting than Brothers, as long as you get it serviced every so often. My granny's & mom's Singers both still work, & the machines are probably 40+ years & 30 years old, respectively.

By my math, the 5500 is .75778 times as good as the 7258.
