Please, I understand the haters coming out of the woodwork to rag on the price, but watch it when you insult my beloved tablet!

You cannot get a better tablet for $99, or even $249! (Though I would not buy it at that price when you can go elsewhere).

$249 buys you a POS Android tablet. And $99... that gets you one of those glorified Sony alarm clock thingies. Think about it.

I'd put the value of the Touchpad at around $350. Because, if I budgeted $350 for a tablet, I would buy something else. But any less, and I would definitely get the Touchpad.

16GB at $250 is questionable. I own one of these (32Gb) and would not sell it for $200. I like it too much. At $250 I would think about it. At $300, sold! Bottom line is these are easily worth $200.

I can't believe people would pay that much. There are name brand Android tablets for $25-$50 more that will actually be supported in the future. Not to mention the Kindle Fire coming out soon...

At least they dropped it, seemingly in response to the wooter-rage.
Also, there are now a few less wooters competing to snap up deals thanks to this.

+1 to all complaints related to the price.
I think most tablets are overpriced anyway.

Since HP promised another run at the discounted price due to the sudden and surprising demand, it shows they can make a few bucks profit even at the $99 and $150 price points.

Now if someone was to contact Foxconn and ask them to ODM a tablet with exactly the same hardware (but slightly changed chassis) and officially put android on it, it'd sell like crazy for $200/$250.

Judging from experiances on the inside, there is a 90% chance Foxconn designed this tablet for HP AND manufactured it.

WOW. This angers me more than the fire sale hoarders who bought dozens for $99 and sold for $200+ on ebay

Woot probably has something that automatically moves the process along when there's no purchases for a certain amount of time. And they probably have someone that's keeping an eye out for things that aren't moving at all to just kill the item (or speed up the automated process). I've seen both happen in the past.

Woot-off killers really only show up when there's a large quantity of something and it doesn't sell at all. Then we have to wait for the automatic process to slowly bring the quantity remaining to 0.

BTW, don't be surprised if this shows up in some people's $1 x3 item. The left-over inventory is probably where they get the stuff to fill that particular stocking.

Should have been doing that anyway. Many items on Woot are not always a better deal. (But usually)

As far as the HP pad goes, can you still find one for $99? Doubtful. Firesale prices don't count when talking about MSRP or markup.

I got one for $99 and for that price it's great. The $250 Gingerbread Android tablets are the real crap out there. This thing is a VERY nice piece of hardware and WebOS is just fine until there's a stable version of Honeycomb or even ICS that I want to run. The only app it doesn't have that I am actually missing is Netflix. The browser is not bad at all (and supports flash), the email client is also very nice.

Yes, $250 is too much but how many of you people claiming it's a $99 device actually got one for that price? The mania caused by that price actually had people buying these things for $300 on Craigslist (a friend of mine actually sold one for that).

$175 is probably what they should have been charging.

Overpriced in general, yes, but in all likelyhood, HP had to make more, because of contractual obligations. Buy the TPs or break the contracts.

Personally, I think it would have sold like gangbusters at 300 bucks. A ten inch tablet for half of what anyone else wants?

For those who want to run Android (quite easily) and still have the luxury of booting into WebOS, here is the link to Cyanogenmod 71. Alpha 2.1. I use it all the time, very very stable for an alpha build. Even at $240 the Touchpad is a nice tablet considering you can run Android on it.

I thought HP reneged on that promise... a week or two ago I saw a thing posted that Best Buy was selling them for 150 with purchase of an HP computer or laptop. (Or 500 bucks without.)

Did HP change their mind again?

HP would be lucky to break even at those price points. Those are probably close to the actual cost of manufacture. Anyway, it doesn't look like there will be another pure standalone run. The most prominent deal is HP Touchpads being bundled with specific laptops at Best Buy and Walmart/SamsClub. TigerDirect appears to have had a tablet plus accessories deal. However, none of these deals are based on charging $250 for a 16GB TouchPad. Many are based on the 32GB Touchpad for $150.

The tablet is sort of a steal at $250, if you don't mind a bit of research and hacking to bring it up to speed, and if you don't know what iPads are like, and if you're OK with the possibility of webOS reaching the end of the road. It's probably the winning price on eBay. Still, most of us remember the firesale prices.

on the one hand, Woot's a business out to make a profit, so they can charge whatever they want for the thing. If it doesn't sell, they'll either grind the Wootoff to a halt or they'll have to end it early and look like a bunch of 'tards. Looks like some people bought it, so there you go.

On the other hand, Woot, you're a bunch of gourds for this move. Hope it lost you a few customers.

bestbuy has always rubbed me the wrong way, ever since I saw them insist to an old lady that she had to leave a laptop she wanted to buy with them and pay them 100 bucks to remove the bloatware. I got so torqued, I did it for free, and I had sidework with a passion.

Since then, they have basically proven to me that they are asshats. Even when the first firesale started, they were jerks about it, first refusing to sell them, then taping signs to the window that they were out. I'd like to see their receipts for the day to see how many employees bought a "sold out" tablet.

In fairness, it may only be my BB, but never, ever, EVER will I buy something from them, unless fate conspires against me and I have no choice.

Betamax actually had better sound and video quality than the VHS. It just didn't have the extended recording time, so VHS won out. Believe it or not, though, Betamax is still somewhat alive in Hollywood. Working as a messenger, I used to pick up past episodes of The Young And The Restless for the show that they had stored at some video bank in Burbank and those shows were actually on Betamax.

I don't really understand the outrage... I do agree that $250 is a bit much for a touchpad that is no longer supported...

Saying the MSRP is $99 is pretty foolish since that price was only established during the firesale. That isn't a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price in the sense that we all know.

I was told these actually cost HP $320 to make... It's still a deal.

And there will be a way to put Android 2.3.5 onto these (Last I knew it was in alpha testing).

HP did produce another run but offered it to HP employees first. They sold most of the run to HP employees. Some did get released to some retailers under the buy it with a laptop/desktop deal.
