How long will this take to ship to NYC?

Hello Everyone - Can someone please help us all (well maybe mostly me) figure out a couple functions/abilities of this laptop.

1. Can this machine bitstream DTS Master Audio and Dolby true HD over the widi connection?

2. Can this type of laptop be closed but left active as a widi streaming center using an external remote like say for windows media extender?

My hp's battery went and it's going to be time for a new computer soon - I planned to get a desktop and run it out to my 60" top of the line tv then keep a second monitor by my seating for normal use BUT if this laptop can do most of what I need then it might be a nice fix

This laptop is powerhouse for most people. Not quite a Macbook pro, but for this price I would put it near a second runner up. Square Trade folks! You can extend the warranty this on the cheap there.

Please call Samsung customer service and tell them about all the problems. They have a replacement policy that would replace your tv with a new or a certified used one at no cost to you. You have to persuade them of your negative experience and perhaps they will replace your tv. They replaced mine!

What do you think?

Squi,

This isn't a CAD workstation. This is a general purpose LT with decent video to game with. Gaming rigs and CAD don't mix well.

So, I haven't purchased a laptop in a couple years, still running a Core 2 Duo w/ matching RAM sticks. So... this Woot has 6Gb. I've always tried to run matching sticks if possible. Will upgrading the one 2GB to a 4Gb, for a total 8Gb running in dual-channel mode, affect the performance at all? Maybe 2%? Probably not noticeable?...

The disk eject is exactly where you'd reach to pick up this laptop. As such, everytime I pick up my laptop with my right hand, I inadvertently push the ejection button. This is a stupid issue, as the button should be an 'innnie' but it's an 'outie'. The result is, after only 5 months of use, the plastic covering the blu-ray player has broken off. I have the Best Buy warranty so I don't care, but you might.

I'll just chime in being a owner of this laptop. Got mine off woot the last time it was on.

I bought this laptop to replace my aged Dell e1505. You can't even compare the two, in terms of awesomeness. The screen is very bright, colors are accurate and sharp, and the 720 resolution is perfectly fine for the laptop. And as someone mentioned earlier, if you use the handy hdmi port, it pumps out 1080 and looks great on my HD monitor. I'm an avid gamer, and this little powerhouse doesn't disappoint. every game I've used on it runs very smoothly on high settings. I love pretty much everything about it.

However, I DID have some issues when I first received the unit. the bloatware is atrocious, but then again its fairly easily removed(not to mention you can just slap on a fresh coat of windows to solve that problem). The second issue I had involved the graphics cards. It has the dedicated 1gig card, as well as the integrated hidef graphics. When I first started playing games, they would fail within a minute of running with a BSOD. I did a lot of research, refreshing of drivers, etc, but the problem still was there every time. Finally after about a week, I ended up going in and disabling the actual graphics card. I know this sounds odd, but I've had absolutely no issues since then, and like I said, all the games I play look amazing. The only info I could find on this particular issue is that the games cant distinguish between the two graphics cards or something and it ends up freaking out. Another thing I read is that when using the laptop screen as your monitor of choice, everything has to be throttled through the integrated card, and thus issues arise when trying to use the dedicated card, however, when using an external monitor via the hdmi, it bypasses the integrated altogether, and runs on the 1gig card. I'm not super computer savy,so I don't really know the main cause.
TLDR;I turn the graphics card off when I'm gaming on the actual lappy, and turn it back on when I'm porting it to the monitor.

On a separate note, the speakers really do sound very tinny. It leaves a whole lot more to be desired.

Overall though, once the issues were averted, This machine has been solid and amazing ever since, and I'm extremely happy with the purchase. For those of you who don't like to "get your hands dirty" to work out a few quirks, you may want to reconsider. For the price, this machine is top notch, and well worth a few hours of troubleshooting.

I got it a month ago and put SolidWorks 2011 on it, and I can tell you it runs. Unfortunately I just checked to make sure it worked but didn't actually use it for any CAD yet, so I can't attest to how smooth it is.

This seems like a really nice laptop, but I am hesitant because I don't like the screen resolution. But maybe the problem is really the screen size. I was checking a bit and this is typical for a 15" screen. It seems that if you want at least 1600x900 you need to get a 17" screen.

I did have a problem with this exact model laptop from Samsung I bought back in August. Woot eventually took it back after 2 months of delegations with Samsung. Samsung will not warranty this device. Good news is, mine was just a bad harddrive...At this price point, I am tempted to get one and replace the harddrive if it comes with a bad one.

I got this computer last time and I'm super satisfied with the purchase. To address things that people have brought up:

1. I have experienced the dvd tray accidental opening. In the month I've had it the tray has opened about 3 or 4 times from picking up the computer. Mine hasn't been damaged yet, hopefully I'll just get used to where is a good place to grab and it will stop happening.

2. People keep complaining about the 720p resolution. If you are such a computer snob that you need 1080p then I'm surprised you don't have an external monitor that is bigger than 15". At work I use 1080p and when I come home to this 720p I have no issues adjusting. For watching TV and movies I hook up to my TV with HDMI and it looks great.

3. I was surprised at how light it is. It's noticeably lighter than my previous Acer laptop.

4. The speakers are super weak. Whenever I need sound I just use headphones or external speakers.

5. My battery life is good, around 5 hours I think. There are different power options so make sure it is on power saver when you're running on battery. Also turn the brightness way down.

Overall I'm really happy with the comp. I haven't had any performance issues. By the way I love the multi-touch track pad, the two finger scrolling is really smooth.

If I bought this I would spring for the Squaretrade warranty. Squaretrade frequently offers a 30% off deal so 1 year would be a $63 and I think you can purchase the extended warranty up to 90 days after your purchase date.

I too bought this laptop when it was $50 more and do not regret it one bit. I needed and upgrade and was looking for something like this. I live in NY and it took about 2 weeks I think for me to receive it. I have upgraded to 8gb of RAM, and that is about it. Oh and have this hooked up to a 27" monitor. And I did add $100+ squaretrade warranty for 2 year of coverage just in case.

I play Battlefield 3 on this with no problems, just make sure you update the drivers from the Nvidia website.

Hope this helps.

This S01 version has a recalled processor chip set. You will need to pay Samsung if you want it fixed.

Assuming this laptop does have the recalled chip set, it doesn't seem like there would be much of an issue with only one hard drive and one Blu-ray player. The problem does not affect the first two SATA ports.

My old netbook died Friday night and $600 is about what I had hoped to spend on a new one, making this almost too good to be true... I am torn on the refurb status, but the SquareTrade warranty seems like it'd be enough to alleviate that.

I, too, am on the fence with this one. One can assume (how I hate that word) that if these are refurbs, that Samsung would have taken care of the chipset problem before recertifying the laptops. Big if, I suppose...

I haven't read all the posts so far ... has anyone who has purchased this same laptop in the last few woots found the chipset to be "updated".

The pricepoint is great for a i7 quad ... id like to use it for video editing and specifically rendering ... just connect it to a bigger monitor...

Thanks for any response and input ... mahalo

I purchased this laptop and I also bought the squartrade extended warranty for the first time. I only intended to buy a one year policy but I learned that the second year is available at half price, so I bought a 2 year extended policy. This was a very pleasant surprise.

That was my thinking too, but that makes it a $735 purchase then. My credit card automatically doubles the manufacturers warranty for up to 2 years. So buying a new laptop effectively gets me a 2 year warranty. The question then becomes will one be able to find this (or something similar) new for around $750 or less in the coming weeks? I'm thinking probably. I've had so-so results with Dell refurbs in the past and am a little wary of buying that way again.

I did and so have others. If you read through the threads from the last two sales on the laptop you will see.

I have a feeling that this is the reason for them being sold as refurbs this cheap. Samsung is dumping the inventory.

I also have a problem with the video card as described above. I have to disable the nvidia display adapter in order to play games.

If you are willing to give up a spare USB 2 port there are several Bluetooth adapters that will do. Make sure they have Windows 7 drivers either packaged or on a website.

Wrong! 1080p allows for much more space with palettes in Adobe Creative Suite Apps. Try doing video/web development in 720P every day. No thank you.
