Does this support 3d TV? The pioneer website says:

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Pioneer+Receivers/VSX-1021-K

"All of Pioneer's newest receivers support the latest HDMI 1.4a specification."

The woot site says HDMI 1.3a... which is it?

Does this support 3d or not?

Hi boys and girls, I recently purchased a LG 55LW6500, 3D, HDTV. Have a Cablevision HD box.
Logitech Z506, 5.1 surround speakers.

Will this AV receiver be a good match-up to connect everything ? I would like to use the Logitech speakers and not the TV speakers.

Also would I be future proofing my system to be able to add a BD player and whatever comes out down the road ?

Right now I have one HDMI cable from the TV to the cable box.

Thank's,

COMPUTIAC

jelainemiller wrote:Building a new home theater system so in for one. Now I just need to find a good set of speakers. Also, what do y'all think of 'power conditioners' and the like available. Necessary or not?

Power conditioners are marketed at those who feel that the line voltage coming out of the wall contains enough dirt/harmonics/noise/interference to have a noticeable sonic impact on the output of the audio devices plugged into it. Anyone who believes that their system is affected by such noise would also never buy a receiver, since housing three separate audio devices (tuner, preamp, and amp) in a single chassis which share the same power supply would create at least as much sonic interference in and of itself. (Also, they would purchase extraordinarily expensive speakers which they would believe to be capable of reproducing this minute distortion.)

(Of course, they are also marketed at those who have more money than sense, like anyone who would but Monster cable.)

So if you are buying a receiver (and/or have speakers which cost less than a new car), you automatically don't fall into the category of someone who would buy a line conditioner. Unless you own any Monster Cable products; then go right ahead.

(Or maybe you simply wish to spend the money because you like buying gadgets regardless of their real-world usefulness. Go right ahead in that case as well; the economy needs more people like you!)

I suggest you get a Smart Strip Power Strip. I have a couple of them and I’m a big fan.

My old receiver (no HDMI inputs!) died a couple weeks ago and I have been on the lookout for a new AV receiver. I saw that this was on sale a couple days ago on Gizmodo, but the link I saw wasn’t right and I didn’t see it cheap anywhere. I put it on my amazon wish list and was pleasantly surprised when it showed up. It may not be the best, but for this price, it certainly will be a lot better than what I had.

wonmoc wrote:7.1 is just two more speakers so you can probably use the 5 you have and buy two more to add to the system

whizzr wrote:You couldn't be more wrong, and if you don't know any better than this, I would encourage you to NOT post such messages, since they serve only to confuse other people.

It is not as simple as merely two more speakers. 5.1 is an electrical and encoding standard. So is 7.1. The receiver must specifically support the standard and electrical connection that you are trying to use.

In my case, by your explanation, I'd go to Bose and try and buy 2 more cube speakers. If they even sold them to me (and I doubt they would -- they know better) there would be no speaker terminals on my Acoustimass system for them to connect to.

Actually, whizzr, wonmoc couldn't be more correct -- which means that you yourself are the one who could not be more wrong. All of the necessary crossover and steering can be handled by the receiver, so there's nothing that would stop someone who wished to continue using their Bose Acoustimass 5 system with a 7.1 receiver from buying two more Bose satellites (readily available from many sources, including Amazon) and hooking them all up to this receiver. (I would differ vehemently with your opinion that your Acoustimass system is "really nice," but you are certainly entitled to your opinion on that point.)

I'm confused, though, as to why you first asked a question, then later posted as an expert to contradict someone who replied to you. Was your initial question an attempt at trolling? Or did you do some research, reach an incorrect conclusion, and then come back to use that incorrect information to bash someone who actually had some accurate advice? Just seems weird.

axelf78 wrote:But can you use iControlAV2 via Apple TV box? Doesn't that require bluetooth?

I don't think you'd be able to to us iControlAV2 to run the AppleTV. If you use the little included metal AppleTV remote it's IR control or, if you use the "Remote" app (for ipad/ipod/iphone) it works over your wifi to run things on AppleTV.

Shouldn't be a huge issue though b/c you'd just use Apple's "Remote" app to run things (instead of iControlAV2) and then, if you need to make changes on the receiver, just switch to the iControlAV2 app. The Remote app/AppleTV has some volume control as well, so if it's just a volume issue you won't have to switch apps.

**edit** Just realize I wasn't clear on what you meant. You're right, the receiver has to be hooked into your home network (either wifi- by the pricy dongle- or ethernet) to use iControlAV2. So AppleTV will help you watch your content...but not solve the problem of getting the receiver on your LAN for iControlAV2 to work.

This looks good, but where would I get speakers for it?

I don't find many 7.1 speaker packages on amazon that don't already include a receiver and in many cases a blu-ray player.

What's the best way to go about finding speakers for this unit?

"$150 for an optional Wifi adapter is insane, should have been built in at no additional cost five years ago. Also they refuse to provide a list of supported internet radio because it basically doesn't support any."

axelf78 wrote:It is insane. Is it not possible to use a generic adapter?

The statement above about the internet radio is way wrong!!! You have to sign up online at http://pioneer.vtuner.com and register your receiver. Then you will have access to more channels than you know what to do with some 1800+ or so ;-) The internet radio is absolutely awesome! Love it!

Download the icontrolAV2 app for your Android phone at the marketplace and you will surf all over the world in no time :-)

Hook up the receiver to a WiFi router via an Ethernet cable. Then you don't have to buy the optional expencive WiFi/Bluetooth adapter for the receiver.

I put in a home network (LAN), so this should be able to hook right into it. I also have a wireless router, so I can then control it with my Xoom Android tablet using the iControlAV2 app that other posters have mentioned.

Here's a direct link to the iControlAV2 page on Android Market:

On the contrary, there have been some incredible TT's made since the 80's, but you'll need a few grand to buy them, for the most part. If you don't have that kind of dough, try a Rega, Music Hall, etc... I get the point you're making, though -- it's cheaper to look for an old Thorens or something of that ilk at a garage sale. Those deals are few and far between these days, though.

Agreed -- couldn't have said it better myself. There's nothing magical about a "7.1" speaker... no alterations to the crossover or anything of the sort.

bilively wrote:This may be a dumb question, but I assume that it would work with a 5:1 speaker setup?

Not a dumb question at all. You can configure the receiver for 5.1 output by omitting the rear speakers in the speaker set-up. It will route the signals accordingly so no audio information is lost.

There are few sources today that generate true discrete 7.1 surround sound. In terms of theatrical releases, there are only a few dozen 7.1 titles that have yet been made world wide (Toy Story 3, Megamind, Art of Flight, Super 8, Transformers 3, some others). There are actually more Blu-ray titles available in 6.1 or 7.1 than there were theatrical titles originally mixed this way. In most cases, the Blu-ray mastering engineers either remixed 7.1 from the 5.1 stems or just applied some processing to fill out the surround soundfield from 5.1 to 7.1.

But the bottom line is that this receiver will work fine if you only have a 5.1 speaker configuration.

Oh wait... I fell into that all too common marketing BS thing. It really doesn't deliver 110 watts x 7. It must be a Peak Power rating (power capability for 2 microseconds)which would likely be 40 watts x 7 RMS.

Actually the power rating on receivers may be peak power or RMS (root mean square), which is about 70% of the peak power rating. But these numbers are not terribly meaningful in that there is no standardization of the testing and no regulation. The 110 Watts/Channel rating on this receiver appears to be peak power into 8 ohms, with a 1 KHz test tone at 0.05% THD. Hit it with a full spectrum audio signal and the amps may crap out sooner (at a lower power output) hitting higher distortion levels than the rating.

But the flaw on your reasoning is assuming that either the power output rating or the power consumption are constants. The actual power usage and power output are variable depending on volume level, number of channels in use, the actual content being played back and the efficiency of the connected speakers. The power usage rating of "550 Watts" is an estimated average based on expected usage. Actual power used may be higher or lower depending on the type of content and usage habits of the user.

Should work fine for connecting to your home network and, by extension, the internet. You'd be turning your extra router into a wireless bridge and, as far as the Pioneer receiver is concerned, it would have a wired connection to your home network.

But the Pioneer Bluetooth adapter is different. This allows you to connect a Bluetooth-enabled device to the receiver wirelessly and make the receiver act as if it were a Bluetooth audio device (e.g., a Bluetooth headset). This would work with any Bluetooth enabled phone or player, regardless of whether that device (or the receiver itself) has network access. It is a point to point solution.

Check your turntable, many have a switchable pre-amp built in. I have an older (10-12 year old) Aiwa that has one. On off switch is located in the front. I had a different turntable prior to that (forgrot the brand)you had to remove the turntable mat and there was a slot in the bottom of the turntable in which you would rotate the turntable by hand to locate switch...
