Those deals are few and far between these days, though.

Anyone who believes that their system is affected by such noise would also never buy a receiver, since housing three separate audio devices (tuner, preamp, and amp) in a single chassis which share the same power supply would create at least as much sonic interference in and of itself. (Also, they would purchase extraordinarily expensive speakers which they would believe to be capable of reproducing this minute distortion.)

(Of course, they are also marketed at those who have more money than sense, like anyone who would but Monster cable.)

So if you are buying a receiver (and/or have speakers which cost less than a new car), you automatically don't fall into the category of someone who would buy a line conditioner. Unless you own any Monster Cable products; then go right ahead.

(Or maybe you simply wish to spend the money because you like buying gadgets regardless of their real-world usefulness. Go right ahead in that case as well; the economy needs more people like you!)

Here's something you can buy that scratches any credulous itch, and also can be practical: float everything on a UPS. They have cool displays with lots of irrelevant but reassuring info, will keep the entertainment flowing while the infrastructure burns down around you. Also, I like the cool-down backup (necessary for my projector) in case of outages. Sadly, we are all Monster Cabled now, albeit for a Monoprice pittance. But everything is swaddled in neoprene like Diana Rigg

The statement above about the internet radio is way wrong!!! You have to sign up online at http://pioneer.vtuner.com and register your receiver. Then you will have access to more channels than you know what to do with some 1800+ or so ;-) The internet radio is absolutely awesome! Love it!

Download the icontrolAV2 app for your Android phone at the marketplace and you will surf all over the world in no time :-)

Hook up the receiver to a WiFi router via an Ethernet cable. Then you don't have to buy the optional expencive WiFi/Bluetooth adapter for the receiver.

You are twisting my posts around. Are YOU trolling? I know my Acoustimass. I do NOT know this receiver. My original post was whether the receiver would support 5.1, which I did not know. What I DO know is that you can NOT add two more speakers to an Acoustimass system that was built and designed to do 5.1 audio. The speakers must be connected through the subwoofer, and as I already said (and you QUOTED ME saying it, so I don't see how you missed it) there is NO PLACE TO CONNECT THE SPEAKERS. Hooking them to the amp would bypass the Acoustimass' audio processing, resulting in no sub-woofer output for the additional two channels.

Sorry, but YOU are wrong too. We were talking about th Bose Acoustimass, which, regardless of what you self-annointed experts think, can NOT be magically converted to 7.1 simply by hooking up more speakers. It's advice like this that is why people have so much trouble with technology.

Fair points! Keep an eye out, though, and those old nice tt's DO turn up at garage sales, Craigslist, etc... I have an Empire 598 that I installed a Formual IV arm on (all for under $150), and then added a Grado Signature Jr. cartridge to. It's fantastic. I'm in the same boat you are, though -- 98% of my listening is to digital formats these days (out of convenience and time constraints, more than anything).

Don't think so. The only powered portion of your Bose system (if it's anything like the one I am familiar with) is the sub. All you'd need to do is hook up the LF lead to the sub output on the receiver, then use the speaker outputs (on the receiver) to hook the satellites directly up to the receiver. The Bose bass module doesn't do any processing or amplification to the satellites, does it? It's just a pass-through, from my understanding. Bypass it. No biggie.

EDIT: and if you don't want to bypass the module altogether, you CAN just add the extra 2 speakers directly at the receiver connection. Why couldn't you do so? The other speakers all feed from the speaker-level outputs in the receiver, right? So what's the problem?

DAMN IT...that one day I'm traveling and cut-off from woot (to Singapore) this comes up! I've been looking for one of these for the 60" HD 3D plasma! WAY too many HDMI cables running behind the thing, having ONE cable to the plasma and on to the sound system would rule...day late and a dollar short...WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smartpost is not smart. It should be called slowpost. My package is sitting since two days one hour away from my town. I could have picked it up by myself. It should arrive today but nothing. So it looks like I am not getting it before the holidays. Thanks Smartpost and really disappointing after sales service.

I am looking at this device as it was delivered this evening. I plugged it in long enough to make sure that it powered on, plugged in the included FM radio antenna and put a quarter to eighth inch converter with random earbuds in the headphone jack on front, radio played.

Unit fires up just fine so far under this level of testing, but getting FM radio over the headphone jack is not much of a test.

Remote operates previously owned Pioneer equip w/o any programming.

I cannot wait to test out the various other features of this, I will post back later...

OK, got it set up, networked easily with DHCP set on router, tons of internet radio stations pre loaded, easy to add new stations thru simple web form. Able to control ipod on screen.

Sounds better than the Pioneer VSX D-812-k I swapped it out for, seems to have a better FM tuner.

Completely pleased with this purchase

quality posts: 19 Private Messages wasserkapf

I set mine up, and found a bug.

I have an "older" external HDTV tuner, hooked to a 42" HD monitor. The HDTV tuner has DVI (digital video) and optical toslink (digital audio) outputs. I use a DVI to HDMI converter cable.

If you use the HDMI for video input, you cannot select the digital audio as an audio source. It will only use the HDMI input for audio source. I have to output the video directly to the monitor, then select SAT/TV on the receiver for the audio.

This defeats the whole reason that I purchased this for: putting the video through the receiver.

So now I will have to purchase a new big-screen TV (>=42"). Will woot! help me out with this?

wasserkapf

quality posts: 19 Private Messages wasserkapf

I finally figured out how to use a different audio source with a HDMI input. (I read the manual)

When switched to the video source, on the remote push the RECEIVER button, then the SIGNAL SEL button. This will allow you to chose the audio input to go with the video input.

All is now good in Packer/Badger Land.

After Woot-ing for 7 years, this may be it. A $300 item via Smartpost? Unit is gone, never arrived though FedEx shows delivered to addressee. Tried to track it so that I could be home to receive delivery, but given the highly variable Smartpost method, I missed it. Some shmuck helped himself and I'm out $300.

Anyone having an issue with Airplay? I can use the iAV remote with my iPad and iPhone but I cannot get it to connect at all. Called Pioneer tech support and didn't get much help, they said it should be working without a problem. Any help would be great.

I have the system connected via Ethernet and a D-link DIR-655. Thanks.

Make sure your receiver is set to "Home Media Gallery". Also, check the device you're trying to play music from--there should be a little square in the bottom right-hand corner of I-tunes (or the "music" screen on your i-phone) that lets you choose the VSX-1021 as the speaker output (instead of the device). If you can use your ihpone or ipad remote with the receiver, you should be able to use AirPlay--good luck!

+1 on this. I did get mine, but only because my super happened to notice it sitting in the lobby and grabbed it (since SmartPost usually ends up with USPS here in NYC, they don't have to actually deliver it to a person and get a signature; they can just dump it wherever they leave the mail).

Shipping a $300 item in a box that says what it is and not requiring any sort of signature? Really, Woot?

Yeah I got it, it was something to do with the darn router(D-link), had to turn on Multicast mode through the router settings, after that it popped right up. Working great right now, now just to find the right speakers, because if these old phillips work like they are(best they ever sounded) then I can't wait to get a real system.

The sound is good, setup through the computer is nice too. However, this unit DOES NOT have HDMI pass through. When it is off, the unit will not send anything to the TV. Also, the unit DOES NOT allow sound through the HDMI out. It intercept it and only send picture.

If anyone knows diffrent, please email me at ke6irj (at) yahoo (dot) com and help me. I read these features were included, so I am disappointed.

I ordered this receiver on 11/15. The item never arrived. I contacted Fedex Smartpost to place a tracker on the item and they can't seem to find it. They told me that I needed to contact the vendor.

I contacted Woot a week ago tomorrow and they have yet to reply to my request. I asked them to please send another unit out or refund my money. Nothing.... Poor service to say the least.
