Yes. Double checked, and it's definitely got GPS. Now keep in mind that it's Wi-Fi only, so you're going to have to make sure you're at a hotspot before you check into Foursquare.

No SD card. You want to expand this, you gotta buy a bigger tablet. I use the heck out of mine, and it still hasn't been an issue with storage, but I also don't store a lot of music or movies on the device itself.

Bought one...even though I heard that my work is getting us all Ipads.

I don't know why, but I just needed it. My daughter really likes the kid game apps on my tiny phone, so she will love this. Now to sell that worthless entourage edge...EBAY here I come.

I still prefer even the 'first-gen' ASUS Transformer to this. Sure it's a little heavier and not as thin, but it has HDMI and microSDHC ports, 16 and 32GB models, and has a pretty high battery life, rated at 9ish hours standalone, and something around 12ish hours if used with the keyboard dock. The keyboard dock has 2 USB ports and 1 fullsize SD card slot. You can get the 16GB version right now at B&H (non-refurb) for $344.

As nice as these larger ones are, I see a problem lugging it around easily, as mine slips into a pocket or fanny pack nicely.
But, damn....it is SO Star Trek!

^^X^^

Is it 7" maybe? I got one through Sprint when they rolled out a year ago. Loved it! Spent hours and hours with it, and it was very handy, like you said.

But when I got a 10" (of something else), web browsing was so much more rewarding! Granted that it takes a little more effort to keep around, and it's harder to hold one-handed.

But the bigger screen is generally my first choice now.

I was ready to pull the trigger and remembered reading about the Newton rings (oil slicks) some Galaxy owners have experienced. Anyone heard of this?
Google samsung galaxy tablet 10.1 oil slick or go here to read more about it.

Good point. If you have a ton of music, store it on the cloud with google music. I don't worry about storage much anymore. Low storage on the device and cloud storage for music and things like that is the wave of the future.

Definitely keep the Transformer, lack of storage expansion kills the galaxy tab for me. Here's a head-to-head review of both on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDj9B24IQdc

My concern exactly...how are these as refurbs? I figure a majority of them are just returns from peeps who loaded a strange combo of unstable apps from the market and returned the tablet thinking it was a hardware issue...The downside the the "open" model, which still kicks the crap out of iOS and the Apple Store IMO.

I picked up the Vizio at Costco for $205 all in and I am decently happy with it. It is a bit slow, but it does all that I ask of it. However it actually weighs only 2 oz. less than the Galaxy despite being an 8" tablet. Since my daughter just got my old Droid 1 (wifi only now...) she can watch movies on that so the microSD is irrelevant and the Rokus make up for the lack of HDMI out, so should I bite the bullet for $120??? I am still in my 90-day Costco return window.

Per Samsung's spec page, it has these sensors:

    - gyroscope
    - accelerometer
    - ambient light
    - compass
and these radios:
    - wi-fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band
    - bluetooth 3.0
    - A-GPS

My 5" version balked on the Sandisk 32gb card I got. It's fine with a 16gb card. Was wondering if anyone was experiencing that problem. Apparently not... :-(
I've also got a 10.1. Wouldn't trade it for any other tablet currently on the market.

I had bad luck with tablets so I am not buying them anymore. I bought two tablets the past year. They both broke within 3 months. They are too delicate, drop them once they're toast, get them damp, they will blow out. I have two laptops, both are about 5 years old and (other than battery replacement) have ran without any failures.

For the same price, you can get a laptop with a nice dual or quad core processor, 17 inch screen, with a heck of a lot more memory, hard drive space, and something that can view video streams, run flash, and listen to almost any audio format with no hiccups. Android is not windows. They might be good for phones, but not good for writing research papers, creating spread sheets, or presentations.

I bought my tablets so my kids can play Android games, so they aren't constantly stealing my cell phone. There aren't that many dangerous viruses yet on Android, at least none that I know of. But tablets themselves are not kid friendly and they can't take a beating. I never bought this one on Woot, so maybe this one is better built.

I just snagged me one, I'll let everyone know what I think. This will be my first tablet. I've been wanting one and since I use Dropbox http://db.tt/slUL96k for all my files online I don't care about the internal storage.

The one thing I'm curious about is the warranty that will come with a refurbished. Any insights from others on this?

I'm excited, the wifey is going to be pleased I got something so cheap, because I was looking at the new Sony this weekend and she was not to happy about the price, so sorry Sony, you lose due to price.

I don't think anyone is claiming that it is. If you want something that boots in an instant just to check Facebook or watch something on Netflix or chat with someone on Skype or play a time-wasting round of Fruit Ninja on, it's nice to have a tablet. This is a luxury, not a necessity. If you require your portable electronics to be a little more work oriented, a laptop might fit the bill better.

That being said, I've decided that I'd rather have one of these than an Xbox and I'm in for one.

your post shows how little you understand the big picture of a tablet and no you're NOT supposed to drop them or laptops for that matter. So are you trying to say that if you dropped your laptop it won't break also??? If it doesn't out right break in two, your HD is definitely toast, esp if it's on when you drop it.

Windows is CRAP, always was, always will be. You pay so little because the market is loaded with garbage and you have to stack it up with virus ware to get it running safe.

Also, where do you think those laptops you're buying are made?

I understand. I just wished the tablets I bought were more kid friendly.. Made a little more sturdy, and can take a drop or two. I dropped my cell phone many times, but never broke. The tablet I bought was dropped once, and was toast.. LOL

I dropped my laptop about 3 times so far, still works. Once I sat on it, screen never broke.

Does anyone know what to expect with the new Transformer coming out and when the expected release date is? I want a tablet for school to take notes and do web browsing. I was looking at the Dell Inspiron Duo Convertible PC, the Transformer, or this tablet. Any words or wisdom?

False. With the new tablet updated netflix it streams just as good as my xbox 360 does. Not sure if your running off a dialup connection or what. but thats a very incorrect statement that netflix looks like crap on an hdtv from hdmi output.

A touchscreen isn't very conducive with either of those activities. I would recommend getting a small, simple laptop for cheaper that would allow you a full keyboard and word processing suite, along with any programs you might actually need to use for school (CAD, any class-specific test-taking programs, etc)

Woot sells those all the time, too. Keep an eye out for a decently priced lappatoppa.

Samsung makes nice devices.

Some clarifications. This will certainly not be the first tablet to get Ice Cream Sandwich. The Touchwiz UI that Android uses is a giant POS and is incompatible with every update.

I have played with this device, and would buy it even without easily expandable memory options or a USB port.....if it did not have touchwiz.

I waited ages on my Epic 4g for an update to Gingerbread, all because of Touchwiz. Same with all of Samsung's other handsets. Never again.

Dimmer? Duller? Heavier and thicker?? I must disagree. The Xoom is a pretty awesome piece of tech candy that I enjoy having. Very versatile and plenty of storage space. Very happy with my Xooma xoom xoom
