kovo wrote:How do these compare to ice cubes? If I filled a cooler with like 900 of these things, would it stay cold for days?

I think we're out of luck. What I remember about specific heat and conservation of energy, from my Intro Physics class, looks like if they DID cool for days, you'd have to superchill them for at least that long. I can't see any way they could possibly cool for longer than it takes to chill them. Count me out. I'll just make my drinks stronger and use ice.

Say I put these in my hot cocoa, will they grab the chocolatey goodness and bring it over to the whiskey I drink later?

I got some of these from a Living Social deal about a month ago, honestly they look cool but I dont think they work very well at all. For the price I suppose I would buy them again to have a set but past that dont expect much from them.

It's better to get whiskey stones than kidney stones - that's for sure!

Have used and did not enjoy. Everyone says these are not a replacement for ice.

But I want to make it clear: these are MUCH LESS effective than ice. Whiskey not refrigerated will be slightly cooler than room temp even when you've left these in the freezer for hours.

I would not call it "cold." I would not call it "chilled." I might call it "soda-located-across-from-the-beer-refrigerator-at-the-supermarket temperature"

Looks like it would take all 9 to keep a non-adult beverage (12 oz Coke) cooled. Guess these are intended for the adult beverage market only.

Whiskey stones sold out the last time there were on a woot site, rather quickly if I recall.

I bought these from woot (or maybe sellout.woot) last time they were up. They are definitely cool but do not work that well. They are designed to work best in a 4 oz. drink and do just that. They are good for about one drink per 3 stones. Once the one drink has been drunk, the stones usually aren't cold enough for another drink. I bought 2 sets and that seems to be about the right number for one person to have 4-6 drinks in an evening or 2 people to have 2-3 drinks each. Very cool topic starter, average drink cooler.

Aren't they more to maintain a temperature than to change it? That's the idea I got anyway. Been pondering them because I use ice so seldom it always smells funky when I go to get some out of the freezer.

i received these as a gift a while back and here's my take:

pros:
-doesn't dilute the whisky
-only slightly cools the whisky (some people, like myself, don't like their booze too cold)
-looks cool

cons:
-only slightly cools the whisky (if you like a cold sip, ice is far more effective at lowering the temperature and keeping it cold)
-can scratch glasses
-might crack the glass or chip a tooth if you're not careful

that said, i like my whisky room temperature. the change in temperature using the rocks was hardly noticeable. if you like your libations undiluted and very cold, you're better off putting the bottle in the freezer. if you like your dram unadulterated and slightly below room temperature, you're better off putting your tumbler in the freezer.

These didn't work well with Vodka. I got better results with reusable ice cubes (water sealed in plastic). Amazon has them various colors, shapes and sizes at comparable prices.

In for six on my two accounts. These seem a unique office party or stocking stuffer item.

And since I drink my whiskey on the rocks and hate when the rocks water my drink down, I'm keeping a few packs for myself.

(Nothing worse than ice cubes ruining my Johnnie Walker Blue Label or Crown Royal Special Reserve, even though I use bottled water to make ice.)

Imagine if they took the incredibly reassuring "generally regarded as safe" and simply moved the word generally to the end:

"Regarded as safe, generally."

or:

"Regarded as safe. Generally"

Great stuff. I think I'll stay more assuredly safe by using the hardened water stuff...

You're right, maintain temp is the idea. However, I don't keep my whiskey in a chiller or in anything but room temperature, as I thought a lot of people did. I guess this is why the stones don't work as well for gents like me.

I have the Teroforma stones, which are quite similar (they're the same size, but they're made of Vermont soapstone instead of Colorado soapstone).

Out of curiosity I took my handy instant-read kitchen thermometer out and tested a dram. I put two ounces of water into a rocks glass, both at room temperature, and added three whisky stones (straight out of the freezer). The temperature of the liquid in the glass went from 74° F without stones to 66° F with stones.

They give a dram a pleasant chill, but they don't make the whisky cold by any stretch. If what you want is cold whisky you should be putting ice cubes in it and not messing around with stones. I like my whisky neat and not particularly cold. I opt for the stones when a slight chill benefits the whisky, as with a Glenlivet Nadurra I picked up last year, but for other whisky I just sip it at room temperature.

I haven't had any problem with odors. In practical usage, they don't retain odors for long, but if your freezer stinks they will too when they first come out. To clean them after use rinse them off and air dry them before returning them to the freezer.
