Your glasses are safe.

In general, only stuff harder than your glass can scratch that glass.

Soapstone, or Steatite, has as Mohs hardness between 2 for carving stone and 5 for unusual soapstone with many hardening impurities. Glass is usually 5.5-6, so it is unlikely these rocks will scratch anything but that special plastic cup you use for your finest Chivas Regal Royal Salute scotch.

i'm gonna get technical on ya'll.

the stones can not possibly cool as well as ice. ice cools when it melts because it sucks up a bunch of heat when it changes states from a 32 degree solid to a 32 degree liquid. (to be specific it takes 334 times as much heat to change ice to water as to raise the temp of water 1 degree). it's called the "latent heat of fusion".

don't believe it? see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latent_heat

Yes... and no... it's all preference, a splash of water with these chilled rocks (or just using ice) produces a different flavor than straight. I take my Crown with Coke (a-cola) ;)

Thanks woot! for bringing these back for a second go-round. I missed them the first time. Now, in for 6. They are just cool and rugged looking. It's the perfect way to "glam" up the gift of a bottle of booze!!

Thanks for you "helpful" suggestion. I prefer things I clean to be just that... clean. Not to be sticky because they've absorbed something that is unable to be washed away. Now if only I could wash away i.d.i.o.t.i.c. comments...

I saw these things at a party just the other day. I asked what they are and someone said Whiskey stones. I had never heard of them before but after they told me what these things were used for I was sold. Great idea if I do say so, you won't get ice melting in your drink anymore, and it will keep the drink cold for hours, or so it seems. I'll be looking forward to getting mine in the mail soon and trying them out -- hello JACK !!!

Too bad that the proper way to drink whiskey or scotch is with a little water and no ice. Water enhances the flavor and cold dulls the senses. Of course, if you just want to get pickled, it doesn't matter.

Great stuff. I think I'll stay more assuredly safe by using the hardened water stuff...

I think you're confused. GRAS is an FDA rating, which basically means "it's been used in food so much with no reported problems, so we don't think we should bother testing it" http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodIngredientsPackaging/GenerallyRecognizedasSafeGRAS/default.htm

Basically, they're saying: putting these rocks in your drink has never hurt anyone, so we're not going to waste our time certifying them.

Pretty sweet. I missed out on them a few weeks ago and am glad they're back. I've been eyeballing them for quite a while now and didn't want to spend the $20 on thinkgeek. Now I got two (because you never know when you may need a gift for someone). Had to justify paying $5 for shipping on something that cost $5.99, right?

I bought a set of these on woot a while back. The good thing about them is that they don't dilute whatever liquor you are pouring on them. However they do change the taste (not for the better) and you basically have to use all 9 of them if you want it halfway chilled. they don't chill nearly as well as ice does. i wasn't really impressed with mine. i used them a few times and now they just sit in the freezer.

Bought 3 sets of these on home woot a couple weeks back. Was going to give 2 set as Christmas gifts. Used one set a couple times. After a couple of uses they are starting to crumble around the edges. Do not provide enough cooling for a shot. Going to give all 3 sets to my grand children as building blocks. They look like they would go good with Lincoln logs.

Wow... let's not forget what these really are - some cube shaped rocks. I'm not sure if this is even a step up from the 1980s plastic version. I mean even when those worked they weren't worth the effort.

I can't help but feel slighted that there is no Woot-off. The only explanation I can think of is that the Amazon overlords didn't want the competition.

One thing i noticed with these over the ones from thinkgeek is the shape of the stones. The one from thinkgeek are perfect cubes, these were a little misshapen. At least in the 3 sets i purchased before but they're a great price.

I purchased two sets of these last time they were on here for purchase. They don't make things cold that are room temperature so don't try it. Just use ice. Also things that are cold it will keep cold for a half hour at best. When I first got them I rinsed them off like the instructions say then they dried for 3 hours and ever since they have been in my freezer. Needless to say I have 18 square pet rocks. Plus any avid whiskey/scotch drinker usually adds ice to there beverage not only to chill it but to mellow it a little. I personally enjoy a scotch on the rocks with a dash of lemon and a dash of lime and with the right amount of ice its a perfect blend. However, on these rocks all the juice sits at the bottom, it gets warm in a short time, and its so strong its just all together not enjoyable for me. Then again maybe you like piss warm scotch. ;-)
