are you really surprised that something labeled "whiskey stones" are not meant to chill a 12oz coke?? Jeez... not sure how it could be made any more clear!

I did a side by side comparison on my blog of two similar products, Whiskey Disks and Whisky Stones.

You can read it here-

3oz is a "double" when talking whisky or other distilled spirits. Presuming you drink them neat, as if you don't, why would you be worried about dilution?

I did't read thoroughly.. if these
are Granite and not soap stone.. you
can get pieces of granite from any
tombstone or similar place .. in
any sizes and shapes you want..

the fun of having someone cut them
for you would be the fun of it.

But did you know granite releases
radon gas which is an alpha (the
most poisonous to living tissue)
..

Granite or soapstone you can get both
for nearly 0.00

And why not try just some round pebbles most of which are a hard
stone (like granite is) . If
they're tumbled from a stream
they'll have softer edges anyway.

all in all this is a novelty like
the brass tit ty bra that Madonna
wears in the shower (not sure but she was wearing it on stage). and
was it useful or worth having? Not personally.. if she likes it then..
she's got the money to throw away.

If you have the cash for this

.. then I'm buying Amazon stock. seriously.

Awesome -- finally a wooter with a thermapen (or the equivalent).

Lowering from 72 to 67 sounds perfect to me.

This also means I can put a 9 pack into a wine chiller and chill two glasses of room temperature red wine down to a more ideal 60~65 depending on the wine type.

In for 3

My wife purchased a set from sur la table that looks identical to these. I'm sure she paid well over 5.99. IF you have to have these purchase them here.

When it comes down to it these rocks are too small to even chill a drink. I've used mine a handful of times and I've always been let down. I've seen larger ones used at the local whiskey bar and they are great.

i haven't read thru all of the presumably incredulous comments, so i'll just ask:

has the 70's pet rock connection been explored yet?

Beard and stone seller: Oh, not like these, sir. Look at this! Feel the quality of that, that's craftmanship, sir.

Mother: Hmm...all right, we'll have two with points and...a big flat one.

That's the Life of Brian quote. And how are these different from the ones you pick off the ground again?

It is the customer after Brian and his mother that asks for two and a packet of gravel.

Why are you chilling your whiskey? Trying to hide the defects in flavor and smell?

Buy cask-strength scotch and then you can hit it with an ice cube or two without diluting it below normal strength, plus you get the changes in flavor as it reacts with the oxygen bubbles in the water.

And....if I drop My Stones into something, isn't that called Tea-Bagging?!

Thank you...tip your waitress...I'll be here all week!

It doesn't freeze, at least not in an ordinary freezer. I keep my gin in the freezer for cold martinis without ice.

MUCH LESS effective than ice. Whiskey not refrigerated will be slightly cooler than room temp

Agreed. Barely any temperature drop and the stones are heavy in the glass. I'd rather refrigerate my scotch. (assuming I want it chilled)

I've purchased these before as a gift, but at a much higher price than today's woot. So, it would seem, the last time I got these, I spent about $13 for the pouch they came with which looks to be missing from this set. I'll take that deal any day. In for 3.

Why are you buying cast-strength scotch? Do you think you know better than the master blender/distiller who otherwise would blend and/or dilute your scotch down to an ideal flavor and alcohol profile?

Hey jaymanmsu, Ever here the expression "On the rocks?" Scots used to use cold rocks to cool their Scotch. That's where the expression comes from.

Assuming this to be a possibly, a possible solution may be to soak them in white vinegar. White vinegar is great for killing odors in all kinds of things.

I tried this with my old Pet Rock collection. I have found the process to be more user friendly with the Pet’s! Plus this gives them a new meaning to their existence. Teaching them how to hold their breath so they don’t drown was rather time consuming. But, against popular belief, you can teach an old rock new tricks.

Here's a hot idea! If you don't want your whiskey too watered down, use less ice. Or man up and take it neat. Adding water can actually be a plus in some cases (http://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/how-to-drink.htm).

If these stones are just steatite then at a Mohs hardness of ~1 they definitely cannot scratch glass (hardness ~5.5).

haha

I'll have to remember that there could be worse options out there when I add these whiskey stones to my drink. I guess the only danger is that my whiskey will be it's true strength instead of being a little less toxic with water.

jymgardner wrote:What about those who like more than one cocktail? It would seem that the stones would not do the job for more than one or two max. True?

My suggestion: If you want a cold drink, make a single large piece of ice that fits your favorite glass. This versus multiple cubes actually reduces dilution as the larger single cube/ball melts slower. I freeze a cleaned (powder less) water balloon that's as large as will fit into my favorite glass. Try it and see how long it lasts versus your standard ice cubes.

Sláinte!

Jymgardner - THANK YOU for this PHENOMENAL idea!
I had priced out some of those expensive metal sphere ice cube compressor devices, and they cost a small fortune!
Going to try this asap!
Any advice on making a perfect sphere with the balloon?

Seems like a low-cost way to try out a novelty item or, as several have commented already, a fun stocking stuffer.

Personally, though, I'll stick with ice. Most rye and bourbon - and even some Scots whisky - benefits from some water to "open it up." A couple of ice cubes made with good quality (well-filtered) water and protected from "fridge flavors" is a plus.

I like how the liquor's characteristics reveal themselves differently as the cubes melt in the glass.

So - probably a pretty good deal and good opportunity for a trial run. But we're still gonna pass.
