OK, I have nothing invested in Ghosts n Stuff. What IS dubstep? I would really like to hear an example of REAL dubstep.

I was into electronic club music a decade ago and Deadmou5 sounds like a logical extension of that. Or where Dream Theatre would go if they had no talent. Or Peter Townsend. Townsend seemed like he was heading in that direction (electronic music) in the early 70s.
So, let's answer the question: what is dubstep?

I think a number of people pointed to viable links in that regard, plus there was that super-informative post at the beginning (seriously) about the WUBWUBwubwubwubWUBWUB stuff ... no exaggeration, that's what it sounds like. Imagine driving down the highway with a tire starting to go flat - that sound would be dubstep, especially if it suddenly started happening while you'd been otherwise listening to some electronica on the radio that vamped a lot.

Not my thing, just aware of it.

For those people that now suddenly feel the need to stay abreast of strange musical genres, I have to recommend you start listening to Annie Mac's live stream from BBC Radio 1 on Fridays .. she's into all sorts of crazy and pretty much launched dubstep in the UK ... for which I shall eternally hold a grudge.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006wqdc

Oh, and for what must be my 10th edit ... Ghosts n Stuff is used heavily in TV soundtracks ... for example it's been used multiple times in Chuck episodes during fight scenes. There's something to be said for Deadmau5 as background music.

Dub Step, oh where for art thou Dub Step? A rose by any other name is still a rose.

To me the genre of dubstep has become a specific stylized song type that is being played by DJ's all around the world during shows. It is much like the Ragtime sound of yore or the slow dance played by Lawrence Whelk's Big Band's of the 50-60's.

Dub Step is a very unique type of music within the electronic music genre. But that statement is like saying Baroque is a certain type of classical music. There are many composers that fall under that umbrella and each have songs that widely vary in sound. Such is the genre of Dub Step! Many artists creating lots of music that varies widely is sound but follows a similar style.

Like Ragtime music, when you hear Dub Step you know you are listening to Dub Step. You could listen to a whole show of ragtime music, but more commonly the band director would have several pieces in that style rehearsed, but it would not constitute the bulk of the music heard by the audience. Such is the current state of Dub Step. It has become a staple song style that audiences feel cheated if a DJ does not include at least a couple of these songs during a set.

I go to a lot of electronic music shows, so I am seeing this emergence in real time. To back up my credibility, the concerts I have gone to in the last 2 years alone include: Deadmau5 (twice), David Guetta, Above & Beyond (twice), Avicii, DJ Tiesto, Paul Van Dike, and a festival know as DEMF the Detroit Electronic Music Festival - Movement.

Dubstep entails a much slower and more deliberate percussive section, wild synth sounds, and a very specific meter (mostly 4/4 but with driving bass not necessarily on the down beat).

FOR EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT UNDERSTAND SPECIFICALLY WHAT DUBSTEP SOUNDS LIKE search for it on wikipedia and listen to the samples that are posted on the page.

My personal favorite is Skrillex - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.

I hope all the people who are worried about sounding old because they didn't know what DubStep is, find this post useful. Perhaps the moderators will even deem this my first quality post since 2004. Then again maybe this Rose of a post is only a thistle

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

The only Dubstep track I have heard and have made a note to check out the artist is SKRILLEX - Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites. I have a pandora station based upon this and have not been dissappointed with the content.
I must admit that I listen to a diverse range of music, I'm sure that much of it would drive the average person nuts.

Now THAT's a about as Quality Post as it gets when discussing "genres" in music! "Electronic" is a genre, dubstep is a style within that genre.

Do we really have to look to London UK for semi new sounds. Let's have fun with das racest or the great sounds coming from Williamsburg/bushwick N.Y.and all the small underground scene all over gentrified U.S.A.

Here's how I figured out dubstep. Maybe it will work for you:

1) Start a track upon entering the bathroom.
2) Conduct your business.
3) At about 45 seconds in, you will hear the "drop".
4) An especially good drop will be "dirty".
5) Celebrate your epiphany.

Intro to Dubstep might help you figure out the beat.

It's really best experienced at a show as a group where everyone is dancing to it. I didn't really get it myself until I went to a dubstep show. The energy of a crowd that is into it is something to behold. You wont get that from just watching a few youtube videos with your speakers turned down.

To be honest it's not music everyone will like. I think some don't like the complicated beat. They think there is no beat. Some don't like the electronic sound. Part of the appeal of dubstep is that it sounds so filthy vs other forms of electronic music.

There also is a lot of BAD dubstep out there.

Here are a few of my faves. If you want to listen at home, do it on a sound system that handle a LOT of bass. Turn up the volume loud enough to rattle the windows. Turn the lights out and listen for the buildup, climax, then the dirty bass drop.

Adele - Rolling in the Deep (Deathstar Remix feat. MartyParty & Minnesota)
DJ Fresh - Gold Dust (Flux Pavilion Remix)
Professor Green - Monster feat. Example (Camo & Krooked Remix)

All of these are a little old, but they have been ones I have always enjoyed.

Try it, you may like it. If you don't like it, well at least you an idea to what this whole dubstep thing is about...

Dub-step is the Electronica's Hipster genre. It's one obscure 'tool'/'sound' used in electronica music/production isolated, refined and repeated to the point where it can crudely be considered an 'instrument' of sorts (where the song is based around and developed through dubsteb)

So yeah, on that note, I use to listen to dubsteb back when it was Hot Butter. And by that I mean, it took this long for electronica music to be considered proper music; so stop feministing it up.

Relax.
