Disclaimer: my kids will have batteries, i got yelled at for buying those after I was shown the 8 boxes the queen got with coupons.[/quote]

Did you not know to always check with queens first? Especially, when she is a couponer?? *Beware of Buckyball revenge!!

Really! I was making a tiara in the kitchen and it came apart and I never did find the last one! I'm so glad to know this.

By the way, one set will make one very cool Christmas tree ornament. We had both of our sets on the tree last year.

I ordered the cubes last time and like them. I break them out during conference calls or discussions with co-workers. They are small, but they give my fingers something to do other than pick my nose. I have internal magnets in my fingertip and nose, so anything to break the attraction is a friend of mine.

I'm popping for a couple sets of buckyballs to round out my collection.

hcir wrote:I saw a "demo" set in Brookstone that had been out for a few weeks. Most of the balls were still there, but the shape was so mangled by this time that I found it hard to believe that anyone could create anything cool from such a jumbled mess. I watched the youtube video and was left with the impression that your ability to form intelligible shapes depends entirely on the original shape of the object. That is, it's easy to form nice shapes from a cube, but not so much from an amorphous mass. I was concerned that after a few attempts, mine would look that way and the whole thing would be rendered useless. That's what made me wonder if these were worth buying. Does anyone have any opinions about this?

It's actually quite easy to create order from the amorphous mass of Buckyballs - just start pulling on one. As you pull it away from the chaos, it will pull others along and actually create a string of balls from which you can make the shapes which are so cool to play with!

miken927 wrote:I was surprised after visiting the the official Bucky Balls website that they're so small! From the woot pics, I expected them to be about pea sized, but from the video on the website, they look to be about ball bearing sized. Not that that detracts from the coolness, just putting it out there.

To be more specific, since I linked to it almost 18 hours ago on my post,
http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=4757546

you need to go a bit deeper

http://www.getbuckyballs.com/products/#!/buckyballs

to see the video and more specific details about the buckyballs, etc.

Interestingly enough, if you read down at the bottom these items were voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer. It may be voluntary, but it is still an official recall and there is a link to the official Government U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Site listing the recall and clearly stating that "Under federal law, it is illegal to attempt to sell or resell this or any other recalled product."

I think I will stay away.

Actually as many folks have pointed out, the recall was for a previous mis-labeled batch.

Your loss for staying away!

Anyone know if just one set is enough to be able to mess around with and make cool shapes?

I bought this in a previous Woot, and I only opened one package. My brother, some little kids I know (with strict supervision), and myself all had (and still have) lots of fun with the one pack. I have the other set in my future gifts box, but I'm seriously considering buying more so I have more to play with. :P

But yeah, just one is still quite fun.

Please provide a short explanation as to how a given "repel" pole forms. I am interested in giving you my life savings for investment.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who realized the problem with the nomenclature. :-)

(There's nothing inherently repulsive or attractive about a pole... if you flip over one of the magnets they'll change from repelling to attracting and vice versa)

Orders over $45 for some, like me. I still don't know why. Wish someone at woot! would explain. I've purchased a lot at woot! and have declined several purchases due to the tax turning the deal from a great deal into just an good deal.

I see it's working again; it had just vanished before. There wasn't even a link on the main Woot! page for Deals.woot and couldn't bring it up via a history link either. All other sites worked OK. Weird!

Oh Good God! Recalled because they were labeled "Ages 13+" instead of "Ages 14+"!?!!

How stupid does a 12 year old have to be to swallow a magnet? But then again, I would have to say that judging by the lawsuits and warning labels in this country, there are plenty of 30+ year old adults walking around who shouldn't be allowed to play with magnets, either.

YAY! I should have my 3 orders by Christmas--which I'm pairing with my 3 orders of Bucky Cubes, still unopened, for my 3 kids. They'll love them, I'm sure!

Got them on Saturday--much earlier than the date posted for receipt. There will now be 2046 Bucky magnets from Woot under the tree for Christmas. :-) (216 Balls x 6 plus 125 Cubes x 6).
