These are so beautiful, I really want some. But reading the exploding stories has stopped me from buying. I already have every size of pyrex from my mom, just not covers. I have used tinfoil in the past and will keep doing so. thanks wooters for the info.

the corps should pay their fair share so lets raise their taxes...

oh wait, that means they'd raise their prices in order to make up the difference, which then get passed on to us poor people. So, we'd wind up paying more to make up their "fair share"...

it's doesn't make much sense to me...taxing corps is as regressive a tax as there is...

sorry for the political rant.

Pyrex glassware... Oops, looks like I went to home.woot.com by mistake...

Where is woot.com?

As usual, I've learned something from the thread accompanying the product, and, in this case, I will now leave my Pyrex in the oven until it has cooled sufficiently. Or it's finished breaking, whichever comes first.

The internet continues to be both blessing and curse. I asked if the lids were BPA free, and the response was the replacement lids are more of a toxic danger than the BPA lids.

I know about thermal shock, and yes glass presents a known danger, but the web amplifies issues out of proportion. All the information helps, but at the cost of a paranoid population.
It's exploding glass, toxic plastic, dangerous food additives/preservatives, pesticides, etc. It's madness.

Eat fresh fruits and vegetables (organic, if you can afford it, or if they're available), lean protein, complex carbs, and be well.

The stress of worrying about thermal shock will destroy your immune system quicker than the remote possibility that it will happen. Take the necessary precautions, and it's highly probable it will never happen. Hundreds of million opinions out there. Two thirds of the country facebooked. Be informed, but remain discerning. Peace to all and to all a good night.

Good points. Many of us cross the street every day even though the chance of being hit and injured is more likely greater than the chance of being injured due to thermal shock. As 7mistral says 'Be informed, but remain discerning.'. There is no need to add the fear of being injured due to thermal shock to the other stresses encountered during this holiday season. Don't worry, be happy. Cheers and happy holidays.

Well I could get the set that is close to this one at Kohl's for about $5 less shipped, but since it won't let me use my Kohl's charge online for some reason Woot wins my money this time around.

Anyone know if WOOT will ship to 3 different places if you pay 3 different shipping fees?

Actually it IS your mother's Pyrex, from the point of view of what it's made of. Pyrex switched to soda-lime glass around 1950.

However I think modern Pyrex is "funny shaped". Big curves instead of nice straight sides. The loaf pan gives me an oddly shaped loaf, much narrower at the bottom than the top.

I bake exclusively with Pyrex - it's the only truly nonstick bakeware. But the new stuff is oddly shaped for brownies, bread, and other baked goods. I'm taking my vintage Pyrex cake pans with me to my grave!

Kirika wrote:It's not always the user's fault. My sister simply removed her dish from the oven and placed it on a pot holder. She left the room, and within a few minutes she heard it explode. It's not like she submerged it in cold water or something, it just self-destructed.

Sorry, that's still user error. A pot holder isn't going to provide enough insulation for a hot glass dish. If you're going to set hot Pyrex down somewhere it needs to go on a cork trivet or a generously sized kitchen towel folded in half or even quarters. No metal, no direct contact with counter tops, stove top, burners, etc. And that's a DRY, not a wet or even damp towel.

I've been using Pyrex for nearly 50 years and have never had a piece break on me. I do prefer the vintage stuff though because the shape of the pans is better. The stuff they make these days has those wildly slanted sides - I can't figure out what they were thinking. My new loaf pan looks more like a pig trough than a loaf pan. I still use it but I'm looking for a vintage loaf pan to replace it. I guess it's still ok for lasagna and casseroles, but I kind of care what shape my bread and brownies are. Those slanted sides really ruin the square pans for cake and brownies.

As much as I like the old pyrex I'd pass on this deal..and prices will drop over the next 6 months on nearly everything. Maybe Pyrex will even begin to make it like they used to: Here's my comment:

I have never in 50 years of reading about Pyrex seen the disclaimer "
Glass is pre-heated oven, microwave, .... safe"

I suppose that the electric element could cause a lot of extra heat as the oven heats and
that could raise the temperature of the dish a lot more than 550 F .. but I've ALWAYS been
under the belief that Pyrex can take it

If you look up Pyrex in Wikipedia it says 'nothing' about breakage .. which is weird.. but a reference
from Snopes.com DOES say that Pyrex has changed ..and it's more suseptable to breakage since
1998.

If this link won't work look up Pyrex at Wikipedia and check reference number 1 and 2

Just my quick 2 cents - have used Pyrex dishes in England for years with no troubles. When I moved over to the USA and bought Pyrex, a piece exploded whilst cooking in the oven... I was shocked: first by the explosion,(which was very loud!) and then by the obvious difference in product quality either side of the pond.

This is the cheapest I could find.

Beware the Easy Grab!
I'm not sure HOW exactly I did it but I somehow briefly got my hand stuck in the handle slot.
Yes. Stuck. The pan was cool and wet. Somehow when I hooked my thumb through the slot to pick it up out of the sink, it slipped over the bottom joint of my thumb and stuck fast. I didn't panic... Just managed to eventually squeeze my knuckle back out.
I am now the proud owner of a 17 piece O.G. Regular handle set.
Because I am really good at hurting myself.

I'm in for one. I love Pyrex. All my Pyrex is modern, and I have had no problems with it. I even dropped one of my larger bowls on the floor (linoleum over concrete) and it bounced twice without a break or chip.

The cheapest I found it anywhere was ShopWorldKitchen.com for $48.99 plus shipping.

It looks like we replied to your original email and I just replied to your second email, just for good measure.

You may want to check your junk mail folder to see if our emails are ending up there.

Turns out I missed it with an ingenious fake wall. For all the other bad searchers....

The square lid is not located in the same area as the others are. It’s on the side. The dishes are stacked in sections and the lids are underneath each dish section. There is this cardboard liner (inside) that wraps around the side walls of the outer carton. The square lid is between the liner and the outer carton.

Mine arrived today. Looks like a pretty good set for what I paid. However, some of the lids seem quite loose. Granted, this is just out of the box that sat out in the cold all day. Anyone else have issues with loose lids?
