Yamaha delivers amazing sound for the price you pay. Just got one of their sound bars and it's literally rocking my socks off!

I have yamaha speakers and a reciever for 10 years now and they have been very reliable. Surrond sound sounds great for movies and of course the disco is also great.

The father of one of my ex-girlfriends used all Yamaha components for his home theater. Receiver, speakers, CD player... you name it.

Sounded great and seemed to last a while... at least longer than our relationship, so you will get at least 2 years out of these.

5.1 means it supports 5.1 surround sound channels. Check dis out!

The .1 is the subwoofer, yo, since it's not really a full channel of sound.

The the .1 is the subwoofer. So you have front, center and surround speakers + subwoofer.

The + 1 is the sub

the subwoofer only covers 10% of the standard spectrum so that speaker comprises the ".1" of the set.

No, not generally. There could be some funky all-in-one system that needs to stick together due to crazy ohm ratings. But "regular" speakers and "regular" receivers are fine regardless of brand.

5.1 means 5 satellite speakers and 1 subwoofer, just like a 2.1 system means 2 speakers and 1 subwoofer and 7.2 means 7 speakers and 2 subwoofers (yes, these exist!).

The subwoofer is the .1. In a surround sound set up, speakers are counted separately from the sub. 2.1 is 2 speakers and 1 sub, 5.1 is 5 speakers and 1 sub etc.

This is going to get complicated to explain.

The decimal point value denotes the LFE channel or subwoofer output in a speaker setup and how many Subwoofers there are on that channel. To give an example, in the typical 5.1 setup, the 5 refers to the 5 main speakers (Front-Left, Center, Front Right, Rear-Left, Rear-Right) while the .1 refers to the single subwoofer, usually positioned to the right of the Front-Right speaker.

In the typical 5.1 HTIB setup, however, the LFE channel is not usually a dedicated subwoofer channel like you find on a standard 5.1+ channel audio receiver. In this typical setup, the bass is redirected from the main channels and supplemented instead through the LFE channel (differentiating it from the operation of a standard subwoofer channel).

A system is not limited to only 1 subwoofer. The 5.1 is merely a designation of one example setup. I.E.: I myself have a 5.2 (which would indicated that I have 5 main speakers and 2 subwoofers). This extends into other common setups such as 6.1 Audio (which is the same as 5.1, however, a rear center speaker is added to the configuration) and 7.1 Audio (which is the same as 5.1 roughly, with side speakers added) as well as 7.2 which adds a second subwoofer.

Edit: My goodness, it seems quite a few people have shown how to count to 6 speakers :P
