I got one of these during the previous woot and I love it - i'm about 5'4'' and it's the perfect size for me, but I would imagine for anyone taller it would not cover as well.

Either way this is a great throw and it is great to put on top of a comforter (or underneath too if you prefer) and will keep you cozy and warm.

Yes--you will want to kill the kitty for nagging you to turn it on.

If you have cats or dogs you will need to make some kind of sheet cover for it. When it is raining they run in and lay their muddy paws on it while they preen themselves.

I like that 3 hour turn off, since I suspect the cat know how to turn it on.

I have one of these and keep it folded to 1/3 width and line the seat and back of my desk chair with it. Works well to keep the chill away.

I need these more in Georgia than I ever did in Vermont. Single pane windows and worse insulation = way too expensive to crank the heat up.

Got one of these for Christmas, going to use it as an electric blanket. It's a little small for that purpose, and even on the highest setting it doesn't get that hot. But we've yet to our heater on, and my room/bed stays quite chilly because of the window, and this definitely worked to eliminate the chill. Mine didn't have any chemical smell. I haven't washed/dried it yet, so I can't speak to how well it hold up. I think regardless of brand, you can always get unlucky with washing them, and I didn't want to risk it before getting any use out of it.

If you're looking for an electric blanket, I'd probably hold out for something else(i.e. full sized blanket, more heat settings if you want it quite toasty), but this can definitely work as one, and may work quite well as a throw on a cold couch.

I have a very similar model to these, however mine does not have the three hour shut off. That's a deal killer for me, since I use mine throughout the night and wouldn't want to wake up freezing at 2 in the morning when this thing shuts off.

Also, although this is too short to cover your body, if you have a full size comforter over you it will "trap" the warmth and keep your entire body warm. Also, a queen sized electric blanked will run you around $60.

Just started using a Sunbeam fleece electric blanket (queen, $20 - buy this stuff when it's not cold) and pleased so far. It didn't have any strange odor. It has a 10 hour shutoff - another difference between a blanket and a throw, apparently. If this is a similar design/quality, it should be good.

I turn mine on about 30 mins before bed time to get it to warm up, so I don't have to get into a cold bed. Once you get down under the covers, the heat from the blanket and your body heat will be trapped, so it will stay warm long after it turns off. I like the 3 hour auto off, because if they are right about the blankets causing cancer, at least I'm not exposing my self all night long. I'd love one with an option for 1 hour auto off.

If that is the case you'd be better off warming the blanket up, then turning it off. You'll still be a cat magnet.

yeawuteva wrote:I heard electric blankets cause cancer. Anyone else heard this?

I've read stuff about the electro-magnetic field (EMF) thrown off by the wiring in the blanket, and how constantly sleeping with a blanket on may be linked with cancer. I don't know, but if you use it to warm up the bed before you get in, then shut it off when you get in, you're not sleeping every night amidst an EMF. YMMV.

Can these be a possible fire hazard? Or is that just if you do something stupid with it?

Soapie0

Okay - I'm going to sleep. I've officially decided that I'm okay this winter. I'll wait until it gets warmer and then buy what I really want on sale. (And because I know you care I want a queen size electric blanket that does NOT shut off after three hours and senses the cold spots - like my *toes* and sends extra heat there.)

Please make sure my Woot coupon gets delivered to me by then! :-) (Especially as an apology to my husband, as in "I'm sorry. I was under the mistaken impression it would be FUN for you and our son to go out in the workshop and assemble the Woot Red Toolbox Air Hockey Kit. I didn't realize that 'assemble' meant you actually had to drill the holes yourself and buy the hardware to hold it together. I thought you just slapped it together. I'm sorry that what I thought would be a fun fifteen minute project involves going to a hardware store and spending an hour lining it up right before you can play. Yes, I realize our son got bored a long time ago. You're a good daddy to keep "assembling" this. Don't worry, honey, Woot will send you a coupon to make up for the fact that your wife was just trying create that bonding moment with our son they told me would happen "thirty seconds after he sat down at the air hockey table.)

BTW, can I throw in here that for Christmas I got my first Shun knives? You know the ones? Woot sells them on here for a million dollars? Williams-Sonoma had a four hour flash sale and I got a couple of Shun knives at 70% percent off!!! That's right - I said 70% percent off!!!

Anything you plug into the wall is a possible fire hazard. Malfunctions may be rare, but they happen. I wouldn't use it while sleeping personally, but I know a lot of people do.

I was tempted by the idea of a pre-warmed bed... however, an extra blanket or two does wonders and flannel sheets and/or fleece blankets are great for avoiding cold sheet shock (not to mention being safer and using less electricity) so I think I'll stick with the low-tech approach.

I'm in for 1 maybe 2. As far as the color goes, I don't care as long as the thing works. We have dodged a bullet with minimal snow so far here in Wisconsin, but it's only a matter of time!

An added bonus is that I can use my Woot Coupon (Thanks Jumbo Woot!) before it expires.

I use a Sunbeam electric mattress pad every winter for years now (maybe six or more). Works very well to preheat the bed with separate controls for the wife and me (she likes a 5 or 6 whereas I usually just go with 1). Plus it turns itself off after 10 hours which is good as the wife NEVER remembers to turn hers off. I like electric mattress pads better than blankets as since heat rises, I would rather be above the heat than below it! On the other hand, a fleece throw would be nice for the sofa as the sofa just wouldn't look right with a mattress pad wrapped around it...
