If you're on the fence at all, it would be a good idea to check out the extensive Engadget review!

Good deal. But 'tis the week of CES which means it shall be obsolete before it arrives at your doorstep.

Might have jumped on the 16GB last week if I had caught it in time. But an extra $40 for a few more gigs when there is soooo much cloud? Nah.

I used the Thrive briefly, but I do own other Android tablets. From the little bit I used it seemed like a decent tablet. Very responsive and fast to open close apps. There is a nice amount of support for it too. Check out the Thrive forums here:

Thanks for the link. Watching it now. It looks pretty good. MUCH more useful than the ipad.. Would like to see it below $300 though...

Still not getting the whole tablet thing when I have my Wooted Acer netbook (best Woot ever, BTW) of roughly the same heft but with significantly more horsepower, storage and ports. And it was cheaper, even after spending $30 to upgrade the RAM. Pass for now, but who knows, maybe the discussion will change my mind tonight.

I love my 8GB Thrive. I take it everywhere, the SD card slot is nice as it can support up to 128GB XDSC cards. Not only that but HDMI mirroring works great and the USB port is very nice. Performance is better than I expected from a Honeycomb tablet and can't wait for the ICS (no official date or announcement yet thought)!

I bring it everywhere, from taking notes in class with Evernote, to playing 'Tank Hero' in my spare time.

Those Acers are champs..I got one too on Woot. Quite the little workhorse.

Why would I buy this when Asus is coming out with a 7" Quad Core running ICS for $250?

I'm sitting in my New Orleans hotel room right now entering this comment using the exact same tablet as the one being offered. Love this thing! A great deal!! In for 3 if I had the money.

I checked, it seems like this tablet will not be getting Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich - ICS).

From: http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/THRiVE-Tablets/No-ICS-4-0-for-Thrive/td-p/251509
========
No ICS 4.0 for Thrive!
12-28-2011 07:37 AM

On the phone with support for my wifi disconnecting problem and not waking up and asked about ICS. He said the Thrive will NOT be getting ICS and there will be a new tablet coming out soon. Thrive is going back to best buy today if my problems aren't resolved. Very dissapointed in it so far....
========

I have the ASUS Transformer, Color Nook, and the Vizio table that Woot sold before.

Android 3.x is nice. IMHO, 2.x (froyo) is a joke on a tablet.

Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich - ICS) is better and has some nice features. Also, Google is now starting to enforce/define how a proper Android App should look and act. And, it based on the assumption of building on the Android 4.0 (ICS) framework.

ICS is the merger of the more phone-oriented version of Android (2.x - Froyo) and the more tablet oriented version of Android (3.x - Honeycomb).

Otherwise:
I LOVE my tablet(s) for the ease of checking email, news websites, woot :-), etc, etc.

Today, I suggest that people only buy a tablet that has ICS, or will be getting ICS. Heck, at CES they announced a few tablets with ICS under $300. Yes, you get what you pay for.

IMHO, as long as a tablet plays 720P videos fine, plays flash fine, has access to the Goggle and Amazon markets, has decent performance, has decent capacitive touch, then IMHO, it's fine for 99.9% of the tablet use out there.

This tablet may be good (expensive) for kids especially if they want it mainly for games, ereader, photos, and videos.

For adults, I suggest getting a tablet that has, or will get, ICS.

Chances are that if you don't run into situations where a keyboard is in your way or annoying in some other way, tablets just don't have anything to offer you.

Sorta like if your typical uses aren't hampered by a screen that's smaller, or a processor that's lower-powered, than a larger notebook, then you're not missing out on anything there.

Sounds like you have what works best for you.

Slight grumble. Just got the Thrive 16GB I ordered from Woot at $279. I would have paid the additional $40 to get the additional 16GB. Slightly irritated with Woot for running these two offers so close together - or for not offering a choice between the two in a single offer. Oh well. Thrive is a great unit for photographers by the way with both SD and USB ports.

"I am not sure that what was said by a non-Toshiba rep via their contracted support can be taken with anything other than a block of salt."

Said on the same thread. Tech support does't know anything. Its all speculation right now, and I would be HIGHLY surprised if they decided not to update it. If not, then go to thriveforums.org and get instructions on how to root. I'm sure that developers will get ICS for it through unofficial channels either way and its pretty easy to flash a new ROM.

(Edit) Also said on that same thread: "Just talked to support and they comfirmed that ICS will be the next update in February and other countries have already received the ICS 4.0 for the Thrive." ;)

Does anyone know if this is factory refurbished or Nuko-refurbished? I'm now leery after the problems I and others had with my Galaxy Tab. ("refurbished" usually means "fixed.")

Wasn't a similar Toshiba Thrive just here for less? Don't get me wrong, your ports rock my world. I need them...and soon. But over $300? For serious? Yeah you're the 32 gig version so if you were any other tablet you'd be in high demand, but you have those ports. Those ports are your claim to fame but they are also your internal memory downfall. That fantastic full sized SD port renders your internal memory irrelevant. You can't charge extra for it. Not only that but you're nearly a year old. Something new lies ahead and while today you may be a bargain, tomorrow you might be nothing more than a decent price on an improved upon product. Talk to me when you're in the $200's. I'll wait for you.

Bought the 16GB version from Woot on 1/5/12 (refurb) - received today. Updated Android to 3.2.1 through built-in software; ROM ver is latest. Love it - Already using in preference to my iPad (v1). All videos play better (of course, no flash on iPad). Complaints - speakers sound tinny and volume is too low ( but headphones/earbuds fix that problem), the Thrive is heavy (fix is lying on couch and balancing on stomach), and can't find Grindr app.

I'm really seriously considering this one... I really want it. I said when the last one came up that I really wanted it, but was broke at the time. And right now I have the money, but I need to save my money....

Argh!! Maybe I'll ask for this as a phd/birthday gift. Maybe I'll buy it for myself this fall. Ugh... stop taunting me, woot!

As I mentioned, tablets are awesome for checking stuff, viewing photos or movies, etc. They are not great for typing, or general computer use.

I can use my tablet while on the couch, on the chair, in the kitchen, etc. It's much harder to use a notebooks in many of those situations.

I now use my Color Nook to show pictures at work, or anywhere else. :-)

Toshiba may not be updating the thrive with ICS but....
It can be easily rooted and installed, if not now, very soon.
I dont root these things but as I read on the forums, the technerds are furiously working on brainwashing their thrives with ICS.

And you are always 3 days away from being obsolete no matter what you buy.

I have a 32gb, I used it all the time.... I love it.

I got one of these at Christmas. Good tablet - responsive, battery life is good and it seems to charge quickly too. And the important thing about the battery? Its user replaceable! The only tablet I've found that is, so you can carry an extra battery if need be! (batteries are cheapest on Amazon)

It has full sized usb and hdmi ports so no special cables or adapters needed. I got a 2 port usb dongle & plug in a usb kybd & mouse for those times when I'm not in the mood for the touch screen.

Angry Birds on the HDTV is loads of fun.

Good range of accessories on Amazon for it.

I bought a 16gb for my gf the other day on woot. It came in perfect condition with a engineering version of software ending in 018. This software does not allow for updates via the OTA app. If you call toshiba they will instruct you to return it to woot.

If you go to thriveforums you can root and update very easily and the issue is taken care of. However rooting may void your warranty.

In researching this it seems as though the units that are refurbed and sw flashed by the refurb company have a incorrect version of software, so there is a strong possibility of you receiving a 018 tablet.

So be prepared to root and have a GREAT tablet or return it to woot for a refund.

I was all set to buy two but then I seen it was being shipped "SmartPost". Sorry, but until Woot changes their shipping, I will not be subjected to this nightmare shipping again.
