How about a trip to the Yamaha website.

And maybe check it out on Amazon?

Even a previous Wooting.

Speakers look a lot better without the grille. Think this will push enough noise out to drown out the sound of a nagging wife?

The $230 moofi reciever is $229.98 at Walmart with free site to store shipping.

newegg has it at that price with free shipping every few weeks too. I love my Woot!/Moofi but I love it more when they have the best deal

Possibly not, however it could cover the sound of digging a deep hole.

I just got a 55 inch tv and the speakers on it aren't great. I was thinking about getting a speaker system, and after seeing this, and reading the previous comments, I have a qustion. Do I need a reciever, whatever tht is, with this speaker set if I get it for my tv? What exactly is the receiver for exactly, and can I do without it? Thanks

You will need a receiver. That is what will process the sound for the speakers. Think of it like hooking up the speakers to your computer. You need a sound card on the computer to produce sound, and then from there you can hook up speakers for all the different channels that are supported.

A/V receivers act as the nerve center of your home theater system. They perform a host of essential functions, including decoding your DVD's surround sound formats, driving your loudspeakers, and switching between audio and video components. If you want high-quality surround sound, you need a high-quality A/V receiver. However you will be able to hook other devices up to your receiver as well, like blue ray player etc.

Last time there were speakers on Woot there seemed to be some confusion as to what 5.1 speakers are.

To clarify they are exactly .9 short of being 6.0

a reciever has the amp that provides power to the speakers. no amp, no sound. recievers also do video switching(HDMI, Component, RCA), audio processing, effects etc. so with these yes you need one.

for something like a soundbar you don't though. discrete speakers and a reciever are usually better but there are some very good soundbars as well. the TV out audio goes to them and you would still hook all your HDMI up to the TV. depends on which meets your needs best

Could someone recommend a decent receiver to pair with this system?

How would there be any confusion? 5.1 is five main speakers, plus subwoofer (the ".1")

Decision wandering between

Yamaha NS-SP3800 5.1 Set on woot for $140

OR

Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System on Amazon for $180

Anyone with experience in AV can give me a helping hand?

I'm dying to see the back of the speakers to see how they would mount on the wall. My dad's single-woofer Yamaha speakers have bolt mounts, so I'm guessing these do, too.

Anybody got a pic of the backs?

Parakaspor: The latest hotness in receivers seems to be adding in network capabilities in order to stream Pandora, Spotify, etc and also MP3s stored on your PCs.

Pioneer calls this Airplay.

The Yahama page (linked above) has a manual you can download. It might have something. You have to sign in though.

Actually, Airplay refers specifically to wireless streaming from Apple devices.

Got the receiver....wondering on the better speaker system.... I'm not a big audio freak but would like a decent, stable, durable, and decent system.

Here's the owner's manual. Look under the Support tab. You can easily mount them on the wall with a few screws, the bracket is pretty well designed.

This is a good price, of a solid entry level speakers package. I have heard it once, and was impressed (given the price). I am an audiophile, with equipment at the 5-figure range; but these were listenable and enjoyable for movies.

I'd say get it, especially when it's less than half price of Amazon.com and B&H Photo, both at $299!

$85.00 off puts it at $145.00. Pretty decent for the $.

MO BETTER
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882115313. I have this amp which is an older model amp(does not have passthrough) but delivers very nice sound.

$229 - $50 = $179.00

Sigh. I bit the bullet and created a login. Absurdly invasive for an owner's manual on a product site.

Looks like each satellite has two keyhole mounts on the back and could be mounted vertically or horizontally.

CNET Editors' Review

The Onkyo package has a good CNet Review and is theoretically better based on the specs.
Buying it from Amazon will give you Free Shipping and most importantly it will give you an affordable and easy returns policy.

With the 7.1 Onkyo kit you can use the Rear Surrounds as Rear Surrounds or as Front Effects speakers if you buy a receiver that does Front Effects.

Got these for $149 too on 12/23. Hooked them up to a Yamaha RX-V471 receiver and a Samsung 55" LED TV. I think they sound good. Very happy with them. Plus this is $10 less.

Onkyo. They make good equipment and if you set it up right, you will definitely notice the difference between 7.1 and 5.1 channels.

I have a question about the "Advanced YST". From the Yamaha documentation:

Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) is a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance.

I'm thinking that's probably just marketing BS, but in case it isn't does that mean that these speakers should only (or ideally) be used with a Yamaha receiver that supports Advanced YST?

So I'm new to the external speaker arena and I'm a little confused about the need for a receiver based on previous comments. My setup is such that I have my TV hooked up as the monitor for a Desktop PC. The speakers on the TV are pretty awful for playing music.

Could I hook these speakers up to my desktop and bypass the need for a receiver?

Bought this a week back the 1st time around and hooked it up to our new TV. Disclaimer the speakers the Yamaha's replaced were 15yrs old, suffice to say the TV sounds amazing.

i got these last time. I am thinking (still) of replacing my Polks with these. the yama's have much better bass but i have to crank my yamaha rcvr v876 WAY WAY up. Like to -10, i have been able to discover the rcvr goes into + digits, these spkrs are so inefficient. I would be ok with them if i thought running the rcvr so high was ok.
Also the volume now needs constant adjusting between dialog scenes and helicopter/machine gun scenes. This is a common complaint but it is so pronounced with the Yama spkrs over the Polks

I know that feel bro. I bought the same.

I think these sound fine in my place. Just keep stuff off your sub, or you'll get some scary vibrations. :O I'd prefer 7.1, but my tiny place barely has room.

It should be noted that the speaker cables that come with the set are crap. I didn't bother touching them. I just bought some 16-gauge cable, and a shielded sub cable on amazon.

You'd still need a reciever, as your desktop doesn't have any way to power the speakers.

YST is a well-known technology, going back at least 30 years. And it works inside the subwoofer speaker, so that it presents an ideal impedance to ANY amplifier connected to it.

No. The YST info refers to the powered subwoofer only.
