sensokaeru wrote:Is this like a Roku box that has to be linked up to your computer to work?

Well no. Roku isn't hooked up to your computer. Its hooked up to your TV and connects wirelessly to your router.

This device connects to your TV and also wirelessly to your computer.

Roku is a service that provides channels to view such as Net Flix, Amazon, and more. This device hooks to your computer and you have to hunt down stuff you can show on your computer. This could also be Netflix but I'm just saying.

You only need a 10 ft cable to match the range of this wireless device. Mono price will sell you 2 for $5 including shipping. Or pay $75 for this device which must be in the same room as the TV.

Yeah, you can carry this all over the house instead. (Must be in same room!)

This isn't like an HDMI cable. This thing plugs into a USB port. The computer can stream video files out the USB port, through the wireless USB dongle, to the Veebeam receiver. The computer may not even need a video card for that.

They include software that scrapes images out of your graphics card, and sends them out the USB port, through the air to the receiver box. Even if your CPU can keep up, the USB port doesn't have the bandwidth to do this smoothly at high resolution. Thus when the thing is acting as a monitor cable, it's limitations become fairly obvious pretty quickly.

If you're not using the screen scraper software, then you might as well use a real Roku.

1080p refers to how many horizontal scan lines a video signal contains. 1024 does not equal 1080 so it doesn't accept full HD /input/. The lingo gets a bit tricky when you see that the output resolution can be 1080p when the input can't actually be that high. It upscales just enough to meet the 1080p requirement. Stuff like that you should watch out for.

I think I'd probably prefer just to build a nice quiet home media server and put it near my tv, or network it through traditional means (reliably high-speed wifi or gigabit ethernet) and use a small playback device on my tv. A Popcorn-Hour type device would do either admirably.
Heck, if you're geeky enough to consider a home media server, chances are either your tv or bluray player (if not both) already support network playback of all the common formats.

Everyone keeps saying 'all over the house' when the device can't handle further than 15-20 feet. If you want to use this with a laptop, why not just set your laptop next to the TV somewhere? And if you have a desktop in the same room, I'm sure it's against a wall somewhere or you already have cables running all over the floor. If that's the case, run another HDMI cable along the wall to the computer.

Of course, if convenience is priority over quality or usefulness (Since this isn't going to perform nearly as well as a simple HDMI cable will) then by all means.

In my case I have a desktop computer in my living room area and there is no good path to run a cable around and hide it behind things (doors in the way on both sides). So for me this works perfect. I can see you point on the distance, but I don't need much distance.

my PS3 already does this. My BluRay player does this. My TV does this.

This device is becoming obsolete.

However, if you don't have devices that already do this, buy this! Internet Phorn on your TV!!

There's too much of a delay to use this sort of device as a gateway to gaming on your TV. It's fine for video playback since the discrepancy is between input and result and has nothing to do with audio and video.

Oh yea...then all you need is an HDMI cable and a $500 tablet...that is so much more economical. Oh, or maybe we should all have carts to roll our PCs around on, so we can get the PC close enough to the TV to connect it via cable. Gosh, we are all so stupid. Thanks for your priceless advice.
