Last time they were PRO X2 8GB

This is almost a great deal, but $24.99 for a refurb shipped, and for $5 more you can get brand new shipped free from amazon:

I just keep buying more and more crap...

Do you only need that USB part for setup?

Yes. Only USB part is needed for setup with this one. I have one and love it. I paid twice as much for one last year.

i don't get this product at all. if its just to transfer to the pc, you are already there. just pull out the card and stick it into the pc. 4gb at that price isn't good. however i also don't see the value in the wifi.. seems very pointless.

So, did anyone else find it amusing that the good writers of Woot seem to go out of their way to not list Shutterfly in the two spots of the copy where there is reference made to photo-sharing websites? No? I didn't think so. But, it's funny that on that same product page for this Eye-Fi thing, Shutterfly is an advertiser. Ouch! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Maybe the Shutterfly swag at CES was less impressive than Picasa's or Flickr's ...

These are class 6 cards, if the pic is correct.

They are trying to sell memory cards, not Shutterfly. Picasa and Flickr are more popular, so it makes sense to mention them first. Shutterfly is in the picture of supported services, anyway.

3eyore wrote:These are class 6 cards, if the pic is correct.

Yeah, it's specified in the description, as well. I don't know how well it works in devices that weren't designed for class 6, but there's a link to identify supported cameras also.

No Geo-tagging on this model. Needs to be pro or geo. That tipped the scales into "not buy" territory for me.

I take it you mean how there are 25 websites it works for, and they chose to list 2 popular ones? I mean I guess it makes total sense that looking at the shot of all 25s logos is too much effort and Woot should HAVE to chose the one you like that no one else has heard of because.... well... if woot doesn't agree with you they must be wrong.

If you have an android phone/device, iphone, ipad or ipod touch you can also have the card upload to that device (and then to an online site if you have 3g access)...when you arrive home the photos will then upload from your phone/device to your pc...to whatever folder/folder structure you designate. Unless you are a machine gun photographer (i.e. take a LOT of photos), this card is easily worth the money.

16gb same price, just no wifi. last thing i would want on a memory card is access for others to grab my contents

I think the idea is that after setting it up and when you are connected to a wifi network, images taken on your camera will "automatically" upload from this card while its still in your camera.

I suppose this could also mean your card could continue to have available space as image files can be "moved" off it.

The value is that if you're a photographer and have a product like an iPad you can zoom your photos from your memory card to your iPad without having to attach a card reader while on a shoot. Though for that you're probably better off with the Pro version, because that will transfer RAW images.

I wouldn't call it "necessary" but it's a very valuable feature depending on the situation.

I'm guessing you'll just skip over my last post directed at you outlining the true usefulness of the card. That tinfoil hat sure is impenetrable!

I had to set one of these up for someone once. It would keep disconnecting from the wifi.

We called customer support and where told it had something to do with our firewall. You would think that if it had to do with the firewall it would have never worked in the first place. I disabled the firewall and it still did not work.

I then reconfigured the card from scratch and it worked for about a day, then the same problem came back.

I don't recommend this product. A few other companies announced cards much like this one. Maybe this will nudge eye-fi to pick up on customer service. Maybe it will just cause some healthy competition and drop the price!

The reality is that for various reasons it is often useful to have immediate access to your photos while on a shoot. There are various model release apps on the iPad, so one possible use would be to use this card to grab a photo of the model, then import it into the model release app, and have her sign it right there - paperlessly.

They DO sell a card reader for the iPad, but this is comparably priced and takes up 0 extra space. Nothing extra to carry.

This has been one of my favorite purchases ever. I just walk into the house and turn on my camera after being out and all my pictures download automatically.

I had a project where I was taking pictures of (a bunch of) bamboo fly rods and could take the picture, then 10 seconds later, see how it actually turned out, rather than trying to tell on the little screen on the camera. So much easier than taking a bunch of pix - removing SD card and hoping they turned out.

Absolutely! Another annoyance that I've run into, is that I grab my camera on the way out the door to an important event, only to find the memory card is at home in the card reader when I go to take pictures. My first lawn tractor had a manual pull-start, which I could still use if I had to, but simplifying things is always a good idea. This allows the card to permanently reside in the camera, and constantly empty itself to make space on the card when I get home. What's not to get? I have tech-challenged relatives who will adore me (and feed me) when I set one of these up for them and simplify THEIR life too.
I'm in for three!

So can this thing replace the (rather crummy) WiFi that's built in to my old Borders e-book reader? Or does it magically connect *only* to the listed websites?

I are confused.

It just taps the wireless network to upload the images from the card onto your computer and then the software on your computer sends them to a new web site, if you choose, or leaves them where you want to store images. No way to use that for your e-book reader, that I know of.

It works by taking files that are saved to the card and uploading them to your computer, tablet, phone, or a number of picture sharing websites. Unfortunately it does not work like a regular wifi adapter, and it will not help you

I have the 8GB refurb version from a previous woot and love it. I take a lot of photos, and if nothing else it cuts down on the wear and tear on the SD card and camera from daily removal.

I get home, turn on the camera, and by the time I finish putting gear away, hanging up my coat, taking a leak....whatever...it's already transferred most of the photos.

Unless I've shot a sporting event with a hundreds of snaps, in which case I sometimes still pull the card for the sake of a timely transfer (WiFi is not as fast as USB).

I also bring it and my gTablet or MBP to a customer's location. While I shoot pics of their business, people, etc...they can see almost instantly what's available and make choices then and there.

Anyway: a requirement? No. Handy? Yes. Time Saver: 90% of the time. WOW factor: goes to 11. Happy I purchased: yep!

Two things:

First these are not compatible with older Olympus camera systems which use XD cards.

Second, I am wondering how you "re-furbish" an SD Card.... perhaps they should say... "re-package"?

I don't understand how you can use this with an iPad. It would seem like the iPad would need software to tell it to start uploading the pics from the Eye-Fi.

Also, what's the USB thingy in the photo? Is that part of the deal? What does it do?

By the way, It's not just pictures. Video can go straight from the camera to you tube, or wherever automatically. That is a huge time saver for me.

I am pretty sure this card reader is required to set up the eye-fi card. When I set one up, the eyefi software would not recognize the SD card with my built in SD card reader, but picked it right up once I used the included one.

In order for you to use this, you must first install the software on your computer, then set up any number of wifi access points for it to use. You also tell it what to do with the pictures when you set it up.

That is used to program the card to the account. One time use.
