Works great as an e-reader, but it is heavy. Hard to hold up while lying down in bed.

Would be all over this if hadn't gotten a transformer for Christmas.

I had this for about a week and returned it for an Asus Transformer and I've never been happier.

The Toshiba was thick as all hell and it didnt transition to landscape mode well. My Transformer is lightning quick and gets OTA updates from Asus frequently with improvements. I've never seen woot sell a Transformer, but I've seen refurbished Thrives, Xooms, and lesser tablets almost on a weekly basis.

I've had a Thrive since August, and have had absolutely no issues with it. The updates have worked fine, video playback is great for me even with .avi files. I bought a case with a built in keyboard for when I don't want to type on the touchscreen and it's totally replaced my e-reader. Went for a 3.5 hour flight last week and was occupied the whole time between books and games. It _is_ a little heavier than a lot of other tablets on the market, but I personally like the 'less-breakable' feeling.

Usually this is a troll question but I'll suppose you're serious.

READING with a tablet (backlit screen) is absolutely NOT comfortable. For your eyes (obviously) and for your hands/wrists: try to hold this device with a single hand for an hour and more, without touching the screen.

There is only one situation where reading with a tablet has its pros: when there is no light in the room; there you can set the screen on warm tones and low brightness.

Btw something like a Nook ST will perform far better for reading.

bulky and heavy? Seriously? I love mine and I guess it might be bulky and heavy compared to a 100 page paper back.

I have an Archos G9 80 that I mainly use as an e-reader. It's AWESOME! IMHO, the 10.1 inch tablets are too bulky to comfortably read for long periods of time, and the 7 inch were too small for occasional web surfing, email, etc. The 8 inch Archos was the "goldilocks" of tablets for my workload.

I have had no luck with refurb puters from WooT! The one I am using now was sent back TWICE B4 I got one that worked. And, I bought this tablet 2 months ago. Guess what? It had many bugs. Returned for money back. No more, no more!!!!!

It is very easy to increase memory. I am using mine to collect signatures on documents and photograph new clients. I can easily store that on a removable SD card.

I snagged one of these in December and I absolutely love it! Streams Netflix seamlessly to my TV through the built-in HDMI port. One thing to note: The HDMI port on my laptop (HP, bought through Woot as well) does not transfer sound to the TV. I have to use external speakers with my laptop when I stream TV/movies. What I LOVE about this Thrive is that it transfers a perfect picture AND sound directly from the HDMI port to my TV. Now, when I want to stream movies and TV, my go-to device is my new Thrive! No external speakers required!

To answer a question someone asked about eReading: I actually use mine for reading all the time now. You can read in portrait or landscape format, with automatic rotation. I used to use my Galaxy S phone to read eBooks. Now, I read everything on my Thrive. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the large 10" screen! Some say the smaller screen is more convenient. That is what my phone is for. But if I want to read anything for an extended time, I use my Thrive. Large screen, bright vibrant colors. Game-playing is AMAZING! I can't say enough how awesome this device is! If you can afford it, you definitely need to get one.

too many kindle/nook snobs here. If all you want is an ereader then yes this is a tad heavier. If you want TONS of other abilites and an ereader then this is perfect.

Thrive has GPS. "An Array of Intuitive Sensors
This tablet PC knows where it is, and what’s up, thanks to a suite of sensors including a gyroscope, accelerometer, e- compass and GPS."

I got the 16 MB version from here and mapping works great.

I never thought I'd be a tablet person, but then I bought Kindle Fires for my kids for Christmas, and I'll be damned but they are excellent gizmos.

Too bad I'm not in the market for one, because this is a pretty good price.

I bought the 16gb on Woot a few weeks ago and love it. There is a free Kindle app on Amazon that allows you to read Kindle books. Can't comment as to quality of text, eyestrain, glare, etc. I will note that this is significantly bulkier / heavier than an iPad or Kindle (due to the removable battery, USB / SD ports, etc.), so your hand may get tired holding it for long periods.

But I love it so far.

I bought a nice leather case that protects it and also works an EXCELLENT stand for eReading. I have mine standing up on my desk right now. Checking e-mail on my Thrive while I write this comment on my Desktop.

I have both a Xoom and a Samsung 7" Galaxy Tab and they both make great e-readers. I wear a really nasty glasses prescription (very myopic, astigmatism, tunnel vision) so if anyone's going to get eye fatigue, it's me... and I don't. These tablets are perfectly fine e-readers. I'm using the Android app Cool Reader, which is far more customizable than any Kindle or Nook or off-brand e-ink-based reader.

I would definitely take advantage of this!

Out of all of the different tablets out there, this particular one is has a great many features that others are lacking and you don't even have to worry about getting memory for it with 32gig already on board.

Yeah, my eReader question was serious, and thanks to everyone who answered. I'm really wanting a tablet (surfing, Netflix, Facebook, games/apps, other miscellaneous), but I think I'd also like an eReader. So I'm just trying to decide whether to go with a Kindle Fire and be happy with the limitations that it has, or go with full tablet. I almost pulled the trigger on the Thrive last time it was on Woot, but didn't. Just don't know.

Well parents are the same no matter time nor place / So to you other kids all across the land / Take it from me / Parents just don't understand

The chrome part around the camera gives this tablet a cheap look. The specs might be nice but I can't get over the look of it.

Ok, I have a dumb question, My husband has the IPAD and I hate apple, so I want a tablet that I can use for work and movies etc. Does this have 3G or do you always need WI-FI? and do you have to pay for a 3G service as with apple? Thanks.

Great tablet. bought the 16 gig for $279 last week.

Not a bad price for the 32... but you can get a SD card and add more memory to it too. And probablly cheaper too!

To make tether work right on epic, you have to have root and install wifi tether. then make sure it is infrastrucure mode, not adhoc. There are guides on the Google thingy.

Got the 16GB version in the last Woot and I love it. Some gotchas a bunch of folks experienced:

  • A lot of folks did not receive the correct power supply (Woot took care of those folks, but I don't know how quickly).
  • A few instances of people receiving Thrives with a "test" OS on them. i.e. not a full, usable version of Andriod.
  • Ships Smartpost - so don't plan on seeing it anytime soon.
  • Many of the Thrives are shipping with an OS that will not auto-update to the current version of the Android OS without being rooted. I received such a Thrive, and was able to successfully root and upgrade.

No regrets buying mine. Just took too long to get it.
Lots of good information at the Thrive Forum.

Let's face it. All of you really want an iPad.

Just spend the extra money and get the iPad and be done with it.

If you go ahead and buy the iPad you won't have to spend the next two years trying unsuccessfully to make yourself believe your Toshiba was a worthy purchase.

If READING is what you want to do, there is no substitute for eInk displays like the kindle has. Do not buy a tablet and expect to read eBooks comfortably. If you occasionally read a page or two, but want email, web, etc as your primary experience, this woot is a great tablet at a good price.
