It really depends on what kind of VPN your company is using. There's several different ways to connect to those networks, but not a lot of companies have Android clients yet (like Cisco). Your mileage may vary.

What I ended up doing is putting my VPN settings into my wireless router so my entire local network could connect remotely, but we're not using a very strict VPN.

Pah! When I was a kid hammers and chisels hadn't been invented yet. We had to scratch the rocks- (a few atoms at a time) using our finger nails.

editorkid wrote:I disagree with this too. I despise low-resolution e-ink screens. It's not much better than reading the very original Macintosh 128K screen to my eyes. I've downloaded a few books from the Gutenberg Project and am reading them on my 7" and 10" screens with no trouble or fatigue at all. These are not pamphlets -- Babbit, The Great Gatsby, Only Yesterday, Since Yesterday.

We will have to agree to disagree. I can read for hours on my high-resolution e-ink Kindle DX, but not on my android tablet. My wife reads 2-3 books per week, and agrees. Some folks seem to be OK with backlit displays for reading, in my experience, most are not.

I bought a Entourage Edge when I was trying to decide about this topic. (It has both backlit, and e-ink displays) I found e-ink to be far easier on *MY* eyes. I have both a Kindle, and this tablet. I use one for reading, and the other for everything else.

I suppose lots of people just never tried a non backighted ebook reader (lots of people do not read books at all, not my fault).

You just try and then talk again.

(regarding Kindle: Amazon's drm and mobipockets are garbage, you better not confuse it with a Nook or a Sony or any other real ebook reader)

Seriously? You make a decision based on one minor design element? Wow.

BTW, that bit of chrome has a purpose: it identifies which end of the Thrive is the top, so you can find the power or volume buttons quickly.

Wouldn't be the first bout of server issues over there, though. I know the woot workshop, which I think runs d.w., is in Seattle and we are having a storm today, maybe IT folks can't get to work? Just guessing.

This. If you are lucky and have a Juniper SSL VPN you can use JunOS Pulse which is excellent on Android (as well as iOS and their Windows and Mac OS X clients are rock solid too).

I got this one in the original Woot back in December. It is a little big, size wise, to use as an ereader, however, it does work. I still use my Nook 1st Ed, for true book reading. For about $70 less, you can get a new Nook Tablet, a 7 inch tablet that's easier to hold while reading in bed.

so I need to know
Woot lists this as NOT having a GPS,
Toshiba says some models have GPS,
It looks like on their website that this model "should" have GPS.
What's the word on this?
GPS or no GPS?

Any android tablet will serve you well as an ereader. Kindle app for all your kindle books, but also many other apps that will even read your book out loud in the oh so pleasant voice of android!

I'm not sure why you trolls love so much trolling about ebook readers.

But it's easy to have an idea: lot's of people didnt ever read A BOOK with an e-ink screen (lots of people didnt ever read a book, apart from school ones), so you have an easy game for your trolling.

With e-ink reader (especially the vizplex pearl ones) you can read comfortably FOR HOURS with just ONE HAND in EVERY LIGHT condition, at home or outside, and just FORGET the device you're holding in your hands while you're reading. Like when you read a real book.
You bet this won't happen with a backlighted tablet, which is only useful if you're reading (not for long) in a dark room and you know how to set its screen.
