I bought the 16 GB version here the first time they were offered. The tablet is pretty nice, but I find it really is a poor substitute for a netbook if you want to do any serious work. Essentially it is a happy fun toy for streaming movies, watching tv, playing games, looking at the mobile version of the Intertubes, and such. One thing that annoys me is that it won't play my .wmv, mpg, or .wma files. Oh, I'm sure i could screw around with some codecs or hack it into working, but really? It's not like playing these basic file types is a "higher function" that only real geeks would want to do. It should handle such basic chores right out of the box.

I sold mine to a coworker for $50 less than I paid for it just to get it off my hands. I am investing in a netbook.

That's what tablets are - expensive toys. Lots of fun and great for couch surfing but not a productivity device....yet.

Check deals.woot, SD cards are posted several times a day from all over the place, typically for less than $1/gig. (if you don't want to trek into d.w. land, try Amazon and Newegg)

Capitalism is alive and well... All the Woot sites are up and active. Check with your local IT to see why you cannot access it. Or call your political representatives... If you are waiting for someone else to do it...

I have a Xoom and have used it as an ereader, but I prefer a smaller device. FWIW I have a Sony ereader and a Kindle Fire, and the form factor is just a whole lot easier to hold. I found the Xoom to be a bit awkward due to the "widescreen" (16x9 or 16x10) shape - holding it landscape makes each line too long for me to comfortably read (and I don't even have Marty Feldman eyes), and holding it portrait is odd because it becomes too tall (and heavy). Maybe an ipad or Touchpad or similar 4x3 dimensioned tablet would be better.

However, you should buy three of these. ;-)

I've had one for months (thanks, woot!) and its great. Has a switch to keep the orientation stable so as you're reading in bed a small tilt won't caust the tablet to flip over on you...

Also anyone know if you can connect to a VPN network? I would assume yes. I work from home and when the internet goes down I am stuck so I was hoping to find something that I could connect to work and not lose time.

Thanks

Sure you can tether the Thrive to the iPhone however that will cost you extra depending on carrier.

Woot lists this as NOT having a GPS,
Toshiba says some models have GPS,
It looks like on their website that this model "should" have GPS.
What's the word on this?
GPS or no GPS?

Cheers

Mine has GPS. I use it when tethered to my phone with Google Nav all the time (larger screen than my phone).

"not productive"?!?

Dude - I was able to follow my fantasy football teams while watching the game 30 feet from my computer because of my tablet! Now, if that is not productivity, I don't know what is!

I bought the 16GB version a couple weeks ago and other than an occasional issue with WIFI, I love my Thrive. I bought the standard dock for it and it sits on my nightstand charging overnight. Sweet for using in bed where even my netbook is very cumbersome to use.

administrator1956 wrote:I'm not sure why you trolls love so much trolling about ebook readers.

But it's easy to have an idea: lot's of people didnt ever read A BOOK with an e-ink screen (lots of people didnt ever read a book, apart from school ones), so you have an easy game for your trolling.

With e-ink reader (especially the vizplex pearl ones) you can read comfortably FOR HOURS with just ONE HAND in EVERY LIGHT condition, at home or outside, and just FORGET the device you're holding in your hands while you're reading. Like when you read a real book.
You bet this won't happen with a backlighted tablet, which is only useful if you're reading (not for long) in a dark room and you know how to set its screen.

No, I read books on my tablets in all conditions. And both the Xoom and the Galaxy Tab are easy to hold with just one hand, although the Xoom's a little heavier than ideal and the Tab's a little slicker than ideal. But you're right about one thing; you adjust the screen and bang, there you are, easy to read. Plus you have much more control over the display: Android has many more fonts to choose from, many more font sizes, much more granular interline spacing. It isn't just a matter of brightness or contrast; Android apps like Cool Reader (and I'd suppose there are similar iOS apps) give you so much control (and so much more control than most e-ink readers) over these other factors that you can have the tablet display as easy to read as you like it. But for that matter, to help with brightness and contrast, apps like Cool Reader give you a huge selection of backgrounds to use while you're reading. You make it sound like you've read more than most Earthlings combined, so you know that real book pages aren't white or gray the way they are on e-book readers. In Cool Reader, I just select the background that's most comfortable for the reading conditions I'm in.

And I'm guessing you don't read everything because you don't seem to notice that I'm an editor and so I read for a living. I also mentioned four books I'm reading on my tablets, so nice try there, Sparky. And yes, more people prefer e-ink displays, and to each his own. I'm not saying they're wrong; but you're making a point that's wrong by saying that tablets are unusable as e-book readers. Lots and lots of people in the real world disagree.

...and what a scam that is. "Unlimited" data is already throttled after you reach a threshold...for me, they wanna tack on an extra $20 a month to use my device as a wi-fi hotspot. I could see an extra $5, but $20? No, thank you....

I can't help but wonder if there are people addicted to Woot like there is to the Shopping Channels. I had a friend whose wife would buy stuff all day long, every day. Put them big in financial trouble. Their house looked like a variety store. Do you think there are people who buy 1-3 of each item offered on a Woot off?

dbcooper wrote:I need ports. iPad have ports?

Ports are so Twentieth Century.

Go wireless.

I had an Android tablet. Half the apps don't work and you have to root the danged thing to make the other half useful.

I gave my wife my old tablet. She started using it, but soon found it more trouble than it was worth, as I had before. It is collecting dust while she uses the heck out of her iPad.

iPads work amazingly well right out of the box.

BTW, I sell computers and tablets for a living. My customers come back raving about their iPads. They actually use them. Continually. Most of my Android customers enjoy their toy for a few weeks before it ends up forgotten on the bottom of a pile somewhere.
