Obama's warranty runs out in nine months. We'll have to see if the American people pick up the optional extended warranty or opt for a newer model.

You get a new one, and you can choose to port your existing number as well. This single device handles both numbers.

You may be able to keep your existing phone # (https://go.ooma.com/phone_numbers). I believe it costs $40 to port the number over unless you sign up for a year of Premier, then it is included.

either way--providing Ooma has available numbers for your area code--or you can go outside your area code--say if you've moved and don't want your old friends calling long distance...

The thing about VoIP systems is that most of my generation (and younger) don't see the need and just use the cell phone. Some of those accustomed to having a landline already have vonage/ooma/magicjack, while others are locked into bundled packages or don't feel like VoIP quality is sufficient.

Bottom line: There's just not a large market for these.

I'm currently on one of the triple play packages from Cablevision (bundled phone, internet, and cable service). If I cut out the phone line I'm pretty sure the other two fees go up. Has anybody done the research to determine what is better?

I had the same deal from Time Warner. I dropped my home phone and my overall bill only dropped around $10-15/mo despite my invoice showing a ~$35/mo fee for the home phone. Bloodsuckers. Your mileage may vary, but it may take awhile to save any money with the Ooma if you are in the same boat.

COnsidering the options of Romney or Santorum (LOL!) or Gingrich (LOL!) or any of the yahoos that consist of the Republican presidential field......the extended warranty is without a doubt the better choice as the new model could be lacking features...like a brain.

adubisalive575 wrote:I'm not sure, but that is exactly my point. VoIP is a great concept, but overall dependability and quality are not there yet to fully engage my support. Latency and flux on download/upload make it far too difficult to be reliable. VoIP data can't get rebounded and resent the way other data can't, so when the conversion between our receiver and the net isn't flawless on the fist attorney at transmission, we hear lag and echos and incomplete words and or conversations.

This looks to be a gamble. For those of you who use it and like it terrific; for all the rest out there who bought and it failed or they returned this item, that is where this apparent never ending supply has come from.

I can see you will never own a house, buy a car etc.

How is this a “gamble?” It costs $140 with the reward to save hundreds of dollars a year, and has great reviews.

Looks like the eastern side of North Dakota can get local numbers, at least in the bigger towns. Anything West of besmarck can't.

Right, you were saving more before because your services were "bundled" - dropping something from the bundle raises the effective cost of the remaining services.

Do not mistake coincidence for fate.

There is no monthly fee unless you want Premier service and then there is an annual fee of $119. We waved the Premier, still get caller ID and call waiting, have no problems faxing and only pay $3.47 in taxes and 911 fees.

Goosedude wrote:Well...this does allow you to associate your GOOGLE VOICE # with the 2nd line on your phone and you can set it so that when you dial out it shows your GV number in the caller ID. They call it GOOGLE VOICE EXTENSION I think.

I am assuming that dialing into it from outside the US would be standard Long Distance rates depending on where you are calling from....that is unless you are calling from another OOMA device (Free calls from OOMA # to OOMA #) or using their OOMA App.

If the other person uses a Google Voice number to call the Google Voice number, that would also be free, and calling from a US-based Google Voice number to the Ooma number would be free.

The Google Voice Extensions are a feature of Ooma Premier, which lets your Ooma Telo act as if it were a phone directly connected on the Google Voice number, Caller ID and all. But you can simply have your Google Voice number forward to the Ooma number and get your GV calls on your Ooma phone.

Neither Ooma nor Google Voice have free International calling, so you might want to compare rates: Ooma and Google Voice.

How are they bloodsuckers? You get a discount for having all 3, once you remove one you're no longer getting a deal. Remove one, prices go up on the rest. Try not to look at it as phone costs X TV costs Y and internet costs Z, it's about the overall cost. Dropping 1 only saves you 10-15 dollars, but Ooma is still less then that so you're still saving, no?

I disagree. Both my husband and I have cell phones. We also have kids. This allows us to stay in contact when the kids are at home and allows for a "family number" so friends, teachers, etc. don't have to worry about if they are calling my cell or his cell. I think there is still a place for home phones, just not a monthly bill to go with it!

MWPollard

quality posts: 15 Private Messages MWPollard

I have a cellphone, but save a lot by not getting an unlimited plan. With Ooma for my home phone, I don't need an unlimited plan.

Then there's also my DVR. If the DVR isn't connected to a phone line, Dish will charge me an extra $5 a month. The unit calls out every morning at 3am to test the line and to send quality/reliability metrics.

And though I rarely send faxes, I can if I need to.

And I don't have to worry about my poor cell signal at home, dropped calls when I walk to another room, etc.

Wow - I woot!ed so much my sig can't contain it all!
