Firesheep? You'll want to set up an encrypted VPN tunnel. Also, the iPhone hotspot has its own data cap, even if your iPhone's own plan is unlimited.

Meanwhile, my workplace's WiFi apparently blocks attempts to use a VPN so that they are uninhibited in their monitoring of everything.

ivanivanovich wrote:Yyyeah ... I was quoting the AT&T page and noting that woot doesn't require a data plan. So I think we agree?

3G connectivity does require a data plan, but these plans do not involve a contract commitment. Service is month-to-month, and starting at $15 with higher priced tiered options. When no such service is further required, it can be discontinued from within the device settings, and 3G connectivity will be disabled at the end of the current paid month of service is expired. When it is required again, it can be turned back on from within the device, and a new month becomes activated with a renewed charge being applied to the service holder.

I hope this settles the confusion once and for all.

So, since we're all going to be here for a while I have a question.

My back has started getting quite hairy... doesn't bother me much... except for the hair growing over my shoulders.

I have a compulsive addiction to grabbing handfulls of hair from my shoulders and tugging it out... it's painfull- but I can't stop myself.

I shaved my shoulders once but my wife complained that she didn't like the shaved shoulder "feel" (after stubble started growing back).

Should I listen to her- or should I go back to shaving my shoulders?

(not pulling out my shoulder hair is not an option- I've tried- but I keep finding myself doing it)

Maybe I misunderstand. Have you bought this tablet from AT&T and avoided signing a data contract?

Because I think AT&T wants your John Hancock on a contract for the pleasure of giving you a discounted tablet.

Which is why, when you click on Add to Cart on that page, a box pops up and says, "Tablet or iPad orders require the purchase of an AT&T DataConnect Personal Data Plan...."

That is, whether you intend to use 3G or not, you get the plan in order to get the tablet. You can cancel the plan and keep the tablet, but you do pay for at least a month of 3G.

True. I've only been around here since October 2008, so I've had about an equal amount of Woot time before and after the Amazon takeover. To me, things don't really seem that different. Those of you bemoaning the downfall of Woot must be thinking back longingly to a time *well* before Amazon came along.

This is the TENTH tablet to be offered during the Woot! off since they started.

In Order of appearance:
Apple iPad 64GB with Wi-Fi & 3G
Archos 7 8GB Home Tablet with Android
Sony Dash Personal Internet Viewer (Technically)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7” 16GB Android Tablet w/WiFi
Vizio 8” Android Tablet with Wi-Fi and Folio
Sony Dash Personal Internet Viewer (Technically)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1” 16GB Android Tablet
Toshiba Thrive 10.1” 32GB Android Tablet w/WiFi
Archos 10.1" 8GB Android Tablet with Wi-Fi
ViewSonic gTablet 10.1" Multi-touch Tablet

I love the Sony Dash but it is NOT a tablet. If you think it is one, try using it without plugging it into a wall socket. :P

And if you still think the Dash is a tablet, why don't you also include the Chumby 8 (runs the same OS and has a similar form-factor)?

I'm not sure when Amazon took over- I've been around since early 2010- not sure if that was before or after Amazon.

What I do know is that every woot-off I've ever been in people have claimed it is "the worst ever" and that woot has gone down hill.

Personally, I think people have selective memories.

Must be programmed in objective c (suck)

Droid solves ALL those problems:

No itunes (Hurray!)
Programmed with Java/Eclipse (easy)

Apple makes NO sense from a business point of view.

If I had the time, I would like to go play with the Xoom, Playbook to see how it fairs. I seen those cheapy tablets that sold for $200 - $400 and those were beyond junk. Unresponsive screens, crappy resolution, no apps, laggy. One good thing about apple products is the apps, it pretty much stays with you for life which is helpful if you have multiple devices. 3 ipads, 2 iphones, 2 ipods.
I tell you if you are a parent, the ipad is the cheapest toy you will ever buy, unless they break it. I give my kids these things when we go to the mall and they never complain about going home or wanting to buy any toys at the checkout or at toy stores. Well worth the money. You just got to limit their usage to 30 mins each session.
