Still no update on shipping, but here's my story for this Barrels of Crud

So, there I was. The Barrels of Crud pops up, and my browser is immediately loading the buy page. Clicked, entered code, and page error. Back a page, click again, error. Lather, rinse, repeat several times. Suddenly, I'm back to the main page again.

So, I start all over. The same routine. Enter code, click, dead. Backspace, click, dead. 5 or 6 times through and I get a notice that I've already purchased this woot.

The moral of this story? Next time I log another browser into my wife's account, and double my odds.

A little higher than I thought.

I did fib on a couple of the questions below. My first computer did have more than 512KB because I bought the multi-function expansion card so I could have all 640KB. Also I didn't build the PC I'm currently using because it's my work laptop. I did build three of the four PCs at home though (and use KVM switches).

With regard to nerdiness...I didn't score very high, but I can say that my first computer was a Commodore 64 with a 300BAUD modem and I dialed in to BBSs because that's what real nerds do.

Also, I nitpick grammar.

I am duly impressed: my tracking number is in my Woot! account, but not even in FedEx's system yet. I am tentatively extra excited to see what might be coming under the new leadership! Also, this is much faster than recent experience has led me to expect!

Kudos to the Colonel!

Ditto. Biggest thrills were upgrading to a floppy (in your face Trash-80 folk) and a blazing 1200 baud modem. Oh yeah, also receiving Sysop status everywhere!
That's what real nerds DID.

I also still have my Quicksoft PC-Write word processor Dot Command and Alt Keypad character code cards (I don't know why).

I used these in high school. My junior year we had two Model I's for evaluation and my senior year we had eight for an actual class. One of them actually had a floppy disk drives (TRS-DOS, don'tcha know).

I seem to recall that Model I's could store one program per cassette tape and showed "**" when loading but that some update allowed them to store multiple programs per tape and showed "*A" for the first program, "*B" for the next, etc. I also seem to recall that for a short program you could type it in faster than you could load it from the tape, especially after the third or fourth failed load.

Hm... Here's what looks similar to my first computer:

Except it was not this cute black thing, but a handmade clone of such, bought on a computer flea-market... Oh, and it was hooked up to an old black and white TV, because my parents didn't want to buy me a monitor (you don't need colors to practice your BASIC programming or to play those games). And of course games were tape loaded. So yeah:

(ok, I'm surprised I've scored ANY points on sci-fi/comic part, and shocked I scored more on that than on history/literature).... duh...

My Sinclair (as pictured above) used a regular tape player for loading, so I could store multiple programs per tape and just start "playing" at the right spot. Programs being mostly games, of course. At certain point I could tell which game it is by the sound it produced, so I could locate the one I wanted to load by quickly winding up the tape and listening in here and there...

Ah... the old days...
