I have this exact model and it heats a small room (200 square feet) very well. I paid about $160 for it a couple months ago and I'm glad I have it. It's definitely better than any electric heater that I've ever bought and I've tried a lot living in the tundra zone of the U.S.

The thermostat is nice, so it doesn't run all the time and it doesn't seem to cost a lot for electricity. I'm in for one to heat the living room in a pinch until the wood heat kicks in. When the zombie wars start these will be useless, but until then they are excellent for zone heating.

I have a large 3 story house with 4 bedrooms on the second floor, and my roommates and I are looking for ways to bring down our electric usage a bit. Since the bedrooms are all to the 4 sides of a main room in the first floor, they are pretty close together. Does anyone who has this think this space heater would do a good job of keeping a few bedrooms on a second floor reasonable warm for not too much electric usage? I figure since the rooms are close together and if the doors stay open, the heat should still circulate reasonably well, but I've never owned a space heater of any sort, so I don't really know.

I own one, my older sister owns one, my grandparents own one, my parents own one.... noticing a trend?

this unit works great and is very easy to use and efficient. It gets plenty hot to keep my mother with bad blood circulation warm and, she uses it all day long.

They are durable and have lasted through near daily winter use for three years so far. I have bumped into mine and kicked it on accident and the unit still works great.

we tried the Amish heater and several others and have liked this the best, we even have a wood fireplace and blower at my house and prefer this.

I would buy another one and just may.

It's tough to find (as has been mentioned) the ls1500-3

However, if you search for lifesmart and mica (this has one mica panel) you come up with a few more links.

Such as this one which is for a SND-1500-3 but looks awfully similar. However, the rated room size is about half of the ls1500-3 and it either has 1 or 2 panels (the description could be better) and still costs 50%-100% more.

I saw an ad for this (made by the amish!) and it claimed to produce - I Potty Emergency you not - "orthoheat", or heat that literally warms the bones.

Yes, because the heat produced by this unit is soo much different than regular, non-ortho heat.

It's a lil' box of warmth, how sweet. I bet it glows menacingly in the middle of the night.

This is the kind of thing to keep under a desk or at the other end of the room looking inconspicuous. Also, Far-Infrared heat can be used to make your intestines sweat off "unhealthy food" accumulation, e.g. plaque or mucus from plastic-y less than edible substances. I'm not a doctor, though.

I purchased 1 of these LifeSmart heaters last time they were the woot - not exactly like this one (I paid $99.99 on Nov. 2, 2011 & has a plain black cabinet) and am not impressed. Mine draws the same amperage as a $24.95 milk barn heater you can purchase @ WalMart, therefore no energy savings. I don't know about this one, but mine does not have the quartz bulbs like EdenPure infrared quartz heaters. My opinion is you are paying for a pretty cabinet.

Deal a day until the next woot-off. Now you have to patiently wait every night. On the brighter side, daily woots are typically more "useful" than some of the woot-off items. Woot-offs are mini-parties essentially, you arrived at the climax of the fun

Trouble is, this unit has to be Vented, and it's a big pain, so haven't been able to Use it as a Heater. But...I don't Really want yet Another piece of machinery in the way, do I?

I feel like this is really overpriced. I have a quartz heater and it is amazing, but I only paid $25 for it from Amazon. You don't get the fancy casing, but you get plenty of warm, radiant heat.

Most people have natural gas but some have liquid propane and some even have oil.

I assume they meant that although your electric bill will raise your (oil/gas/propane) heating bill will drop even more

I'm not the first to point this out but I want to remind you all that as far as efficiency goes, ALL 1500 watt electric heaters have the exact same efficiency - 100%.

When things are inefficient, energy is wasted in the form of heat. If a 1500 watt heater is not efficient at turning electricity into heat, just where is that energy going? It's a rhetorical question.

Buy it because you like the way it looks, or you like that it is quiet and has a fan, but don't buy it thinking that it is more efficient than any other electric heater.

ThatPoshGirl

quality posts: 31 Private Messages ThatPoshGirl

PS. This is the $25 model I got from Amazon. There are a lot of similar models, some with fans and some without. I used it quite a lot throughout December and my electric bill only went up about $10.

That's actually not as dumb as it sounds; infrared heaters don't work like the combustion of a fire or convection of an oven, they actually radiate energy which heats the objects that absorb it. The previous "warming the bones"comment is a pretty good way to put it.

Air, not being very dense, tends not to absorb the heat, so these don't affect your humidity as badly either.
