The early units had the shorter cord. I bought one later and the cord length was fine.

I've had the Iconia A500 for about 5 months now and I can't say enough good things about it. The 32 gigabytes is more than enough space and if you are worried there is the expandable micro sd card slot which I also use.

A single charge seems to go on forever, even when I am running 3D graphical games. On that note it also runs very well. The Tegra 2 Graphics card is pretty stunning and runs very smoothly.

If you are worried about customization, there are plenty of launcher apps that make your tablet completely your own.

As a college student I would highly recommend this Tablet. Evernote helps me in the class and keeps me on top of my school work. Make sure to buy a bluetooth keyboard though. It just helps and makes the tablet that much better. Also pick up an HDMI cable as this runs 720p out to televisions and it looks stunning.

Tablets are largely a waste of money. Get yourself a modern laptop that has a new AMD(Piledriver around June of this year) or Intel chipset(Ivybridge in April) and it'll always be fast enough to do most anything you would ever want to do on a computer. This way you don't have to waste money by buying the latest thing in the future. Be sure that is comes with at least an mSATA SSD and room for a mechanical drive for mass internal storage. 'Tablet' laptops exist, where the lid can flip over and it has a touch screen.

X86 computers, like most laptops, are open. You can run whatever operating system you want on them, and you have root access. With tablets, you don't get root access. It is a very limited gadget unless you jailbreak it.

Yeah, I think the best bet if one is trying to extend wireless time, is to get an extended battery that acts as the AC power adapter charger, plugs into the power jack of the tablet.

Have you really not read the numerous comments on how simple it is to root not only this tablet, but just about any android tablet? 20 minute process and you're up and running whatever ROM you want to install.

Like I, and others, have said previously, tablets aren't laptop replacements, they're totally different machines with a different set of target uses. Of course I have an up to date laptop, but it doesn't give me the fun or freedom of my tablet.

Hi everyone,
I now this may sound a lil crazy but we want to get this for our 4 year old. He is really smart and loves tablets. We do have the ipad but he needs his own. Is this one worth the buy?

I own this thing, and the charger is a little annoying. It's actually still sitting dead in my bag from yesterday because I haven't felt like messing with the charger.

That said, everything else about this thing rocks. it has a respectable battery life, and can sit idle for about a week or so. Using it... I'd say it has a good ten hours of operating time out of the box, and naturally decreases with how much junk you've got running.

Of all the tablet choices that existed when I was getting mine, This is hands down the best one. The full-size usb port (it was the only one that had one) is made out of win.

...Yes, I use it for DnD.

I was looking at the Nook color last year hoping it could help me with editing, but the handwriting functionality had lots of glitches, really slow and choppy, so I knew it wouldn't do what I needed. If this works well, it would be a dream come true for me.

The processor on this tablet is about the same as the Toshiba Thrive I use. So as morriea said, I can't speak exactly on this tablet, but the app Evernote is capable of doing what you want. And I have no lag of writing with a stylus on my tablet. It is very responsive, and I see no reason why this tablet would be any different. As for the Nook color, it has not even half of the perfmance this one has. It said 800Mhz single core, 512ram. This tablet has a dual core 1ghz, and double the ram. I think you would be pleased, IMHO.

Thanks! I, too, have no problem with Evernote on my Thrive. Very responsive. I just hate to speak about a tablet that I have not had "hands-on" experience with. I have always thought of this as a sorta "sister" to the Thrive.

I also use the Nook Color with CM7 boot chip and would not dream of trying to use stylus input. Even overclocked it just does not have the OOOMPH. Do not get me wrong...I love the device, especially for the price, but it is just for quick net checks and playing with custom ROMS.

Having used this tablet myself for the past several months, I would have to say that I am extremely pleased. I have use most other tablets out there and this is definitely the best bang for the buck, especially at $300.

While the screen is not IPS like the others, it is very high quality for a regular LCD. It does have a lot of glare, but this is fixed using any good screen protector. The stereo speakers surprised me when I first played a song - very loud and clear, and nearly omnidirectional.

I have noticed that the microphone is not as sensitive as some of the other tablets, but it should be just fine for video chatting. Camera quality is ok, obviously it's no DSLR. The microSDHC slot and HDMI out are features I never planned on using but have turned out to be very useful. Throwing on a DVI adapter makes for easy powerpoint presentations at school.

Probably the most surprising feature is the full-size USB port. At first I figured it was more of a gimmick, but not I use it every day. Plug in a mouse and a cursor pops up, throw in a keyboard and surfing the internet is even easier. It works well with both flash drives and portable hard drives, and can even recognize NTFS-formatted drives if you're running the right ROM.

The only thing I didn't like about the tablet is how short the charge cable was, so I ended up getting a longer aftermarket charger for cheap on eBay. However, this may not be an issue for some people.

Right now I'm running a custom version of ICS which - although is missing some features and is still a bit buggy - runs buttery smooth. If you're on the fence I'd definitely say you should go for it. It runs really well out of the box and only gets better if you know how to install custom ROMs.

I'm about to get this, but as a student there is two things I'm worried about:

1: I want to use it to take notes using a straight up notetaking app or using a pdf presentation/powerpoint to write notes on.

Can I do that with this and is there a pen/stylus that is good enough to do this? I mean I'm obviously not going to be able to use the same thing as the HTC flyer or vision (what ever the name), but I'd like something close to it.

2. How are the cases and actual product holding up to backpacks that are tossed onto soft surfaces like car/truck seats and couches? Or just 1 foot drops from a backpack? My notebook the acer aspire timelinex 5830tg has no issues, but after a few months I put it in a special case to protect it from scratches and small impacts. *Typically see them w/ macbooks

Thanks

edit: ffs sold out. Hopefully it will be on in the next wootoff

How does this compare to the HTC EVO View, aside from the size, that another site recently ran a sale on daily?

Any opinions?

Beauty of a deal like this.....if you do not like it you can get your investment back on eBay or CL.

I can't see where it was refurbished and it works like a dream. I paid $355 and still don't see it on sale for that price anywhere. Lowest has been $400 once.

So I don't agree with you. This tablet has a 4 1/2 star rating on Amazon's 53 ratings. Sounds good to me. Maybe in the summer it will come down to that price but why wait that long? No tax for most states, $5 shipping, no gas driving to pick it up in east bum fork.

As you said, just your opinion and this is just mine.

Nite

I also got the Xoom on here about that same time. It's been great. No complaints for a refurb. AND...it came with the previous owners apps on it. I took it to my local Verizon store and they deleted the previous account and all the personal info in about 10 seconds and I got about 20 apps...Including Angry Birds Rio. AND...Ice Cream Sandwich loaded this week OTA (over the air)in about 7 min. It's a long update but the Xoom seems to run faster and load apps quicker.

Just my 2 cents worth since we're seeing a TON of tablets lately. Who knows what could be next.

Agree. I recently got delivery of mines (bought 2 for my other 2 A500). I can see the lid that holds the case close could wear out over time but really like how the case doesn't add any extra weight to the tablet.

Think they're equally matched, and my Thrive's just what I wanted.

I checked out the Thrive at a local Best Buy. The weight of the thing was a downer for me. The look wasn't appealing either but, primarily the weight.

There are such applications available. The stylus I picked up was not working with the pin-tip, but the stub-tip did. Until I lost it. Oh well, got it for a buck out of a clearance bin.

Wasn't too good about recognizing my handwriting, but then I'm not famed for my good penmanship either.

Mine hasn't had a problem, though again, I got a clearance case, not a good one, and I don't have a backpack to use anyway.

I have been close to dropping it a few times, but the worse of those it wasn't even in a case.

First off, i don't have this tablet but i've done a lot of research because I had the same question - can i buy this and write on it with a stylus for taking notes on PPT in class?

....and the general answer is most-likely not if this is a capacitive touch screen (which most tablets are, however with a resistive touch screen you can)

A stylus (even an expensive aftermarket) will still lag with handwriting, especially with fast and small print handwriting - as when you're trying to keep up with the professor's lecture.

Also, resting your palm while you write on the tablet proves challenging because the multitouch screen will sense your palm and redirect your writing.

These tablets are different from the PC tablets that run at the high $hundreds-$1000 which are actual laptops with capabilities of writing proficiently with a stylus and controlling via touchscreen. I hope this clears some confusion up!

A joke, right? The fact you pretty much have to connect it to a computer and sync with Itunes is a non-starter for me, but on the hardware end also, this is a much more versatile and connectable tablet than the Ipad.

If it's like my 16GB version I am using right now to make this post, it's quite wonderful. I use it for when I do not feel like firing up my desktop, to see what's for sale at the various woot sites. I do HIGHLY recommend getting a case plus a stylis, maybe a screen protector too - it's well worth it for the added protection and the stylis and protector to keep the display from getting dirty.

I use a lens cleaning cloth and lens cleaning solution to get rid of fingerprint and stray dirt from the screen. I've also used glass wipes that do work OK in a pinch.

For my needs, the ipad2 would need a big improvement with the cameras before I would consider buying one - the Acer, even the Samsung Gal. Have better cameras. They also have slightly larger displays (but not of the same quality). But, like most Apple products, you pay extra for the name.

I got the 16gb one new at walmart for $348 on January 1. It's a great item. I love the multitasking, and how it connects to my TV with a cable i got for $4 at Monoprice.com. I learned that the apps you use stay open after you go back to the home screen, so unless you do a force close on each one, the best way to clear them all is turn the tablet off at the end of the day...

Didn't realize shipping was so slow, this being an Amazon owned company.

I live in the Pacific northwest and am used to slower shipping times though whenever I've ordered from amazon it's always there within a few days.

This will be my first tablet so am just impatient for it to arrive.

Where do you check your shipping status? Under my account I don't see anything but the fact that I ordered it.

If you click on the Acer ICONIA Tab in your order list on "My Account", it will take you to your order page. If it has shipped, there will be a tracking number shown there.

Another way to check is to use FedEx's “Track by Reference” feature to get tracking info using your order number. Your order number is on your receipt which you can get via My Account. Leave the Account Number blank. Enter your order number in the reference box. Next, select your country and enter your zip code. Click TRACK and voilà, you may have tracking info.

Note that we send electronic shipping information to FedEx a day or two before they get the actual shipment so it can take a day or two for everything to sync up.

Yup, also have my tracking, eventhough it's only showing as initiated, but info has not been updated since yesterday, which is typical of fedex smartpost shipments. From previous deliveries, I expect this to be delivered Monday or Tuesday of next week.
