Get KalemSoft Media Player and you can play any video file (included 1080p) on the TP (NO need to convert them)! And you can play them without the need to copy them to your TP!

Depends on how you look at it... Since you got one at a firesale price... Have any problems with your charging area with the original charger that came with it? A WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE.

And a whole lot of people have not - the overwhelming majority I'd bet. I got mine brand new during the firesale and never had a problem charging it via USB.

Fountain3586 wrote:First of all, why no one ever talks about why this Tablet was actually discontinued blows my mind...

I know why, want to hear? Who cares if you don't want to, I'm going to tell you anyway.

So, my husband and I own a couple of these tablets, as we got ours on sale like most everyone else. Of course as I started to use it, I wondered why it had been discontinued. I looked for every reason, questioned every aspect of its existence... and I figured it out.

Ever use the charger that came with your touchpad? Not easily! I originally used the wireless charger with the touchpad, so I didn't realize at first that the charger that plugged into the touchpad was pretty useless. The very first time I tried to plug the charger into the unit, I was very careful and wanted to make sure that I didn't hurt my new baby... but it was useless. No way was I going to get my charger into that hole. The port at the end of the charger would by no means fit. I got a little rough with it, but not to the point of rendering it useless. The port was too small for the plug of the charger.

Then I started thinking, well, likely, if mine did that, a whole lot of other peoples from that same exact batch probably did that too.

My guess is that Woot doesn't have those batches of tablets, because these are refurbished... YOU SEE... HP NEVER INTENDED TO RELEASE MORE OF THOSE ORIGINAL TOUCHPADS!! They didn't want more and more people to figure out that they had a manufacturing boo boo at the plant in their initial release phase. That would be soooo bad for business.

There are a lot of blogs out there that mention the charging section not working, but no one ever really talks about how it must be a universal issue.

Of course it charges on the touchstone with ease, but if you ever have to use the charger that came with it, you're in for a shocker... IT SUCKS!

Seriously... How could there be so many REFURBS ALREADY?! It's hardly been 6 months since their initial release... Ahhh, I'm glad you get it!!

... one more thing... MY GUESS is that these refurbs were FIXED as far as the charging area is concerned...

:-) Happy Wooting!

I have had the touchpad since the fire sale. 32GB model. I have only charged it using the charger with no problem plugging it in and charging. So this problem you speak is not universal and would not indicate why it was discontinued. As to why it was discontinued is not manufacturing defect they got completely out of the tablet business. There are performance inherent issues with WEBOS that HP was not aware of when they bought Palm. Functionality webos works great and with the kindle app makes excellent reader. At 150 great buy new. 200 + for a refurb. Depends on you and what you want it for. But you are not going to find a IPS screen tablet for anywhere close to this price.

Ask them how the charger works that came with it... You'll figure out fast enough that it was a pain in the ass... Either A, the port was too small, or B, the port stopped working... They probably only use the touchstone charger!!

If you want to put a little extra work into it, you can setup the micro-USB to run in host mode. Then you can plug in a card reader.

I missed the Acer tablet and have been on tilt so I bit the bullet and bought this one. It would have been nice to have purchased one during the fire sale but this is still a decent price for what I want it for; basic web surfing and now I don't have to worry about my son breaking my iPhone.

Once again this is just your opinion. Sorry to burst your bubble but you have no idea what is going to happen. I dont use it but from the people I know who do love it. Maybe I will try it out but once it hits the open source it is far from dead. That is my "opinion"

That means nicer screen, Beats speakers, good networking... they didn't cut the corners on parts and design that you would have to for a $200 device. DEFINITELY worth it.

just to add a little fuel for comparison, i decided to host a pic of one of my many tech gadget spreadsheets: http://i.imgur.com/XAhsS.png

this one compares the Touchpad to the iPad 2, Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet, Nook Color, and HTC Flyer/View 4G

looking at the hardware, it's obviously a better value than a Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet: front-facing cam, bluetooth, bigger screen, faster CPU, more storage, bigger battery

the only problem would be software and your feelings towards webOS... once a stable Android 4.0 port is released, I believe that would severely up the value of this deal

as a side note, I don't think open-sourcing webOS will save it... it's a nice gesture, but I'm setting my expectations extremely low

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. The firesale price is about the right price for this tablet if you plan on sticking with Webos.

The things I wished this had was HDMI out b/c it plays HD videos with Kalemsoft Apps wonderfully. Also the front camera sucks

If you are not technical type and just want good out of the box experience. I would save my money and buy one of those android tablets that woot sells so often. If you have the patience to get dirty a bit, Preware root and the upcoming ICS rom may make this worthwhile.

You really have no clue, do you? Have you even listened to what the tech industry says about an Android tablet? They say not to buy one now. Where do you think Ice Cream Sandwich gets its features? It comes from webOS.

iOS fairs well, but it even has its downsides.

Nokia is running WP7.

You need to get out a little more.

I bought 3 of these and am typing from one now. I love it and not one of the 3 have problems with the plug not being able to charge. 2 came directly from HP, the other sams club so maybe I got lucky. Even at this price, they are worth it. They were discontinued due to HP stupidity. Webos is a great os that HP paid much moolah for, just to run it into the ground.

Review from a fire sale owner:

I've actually been satisfied with my Touchpad. Granted, I got it at the $100 price point, but between the strides made to improve it via official updates and homebrew patches (which aren't hard to install, especially with the ever helpful WebOS community) and the encouraging effort to get Android ICS on it, I could see this price point.

Pros:
-Relatively cheap for good hardware
-Despite limited app support compared to Android and iOS, WebOS is intuitive and great for multitasking
-Project to port Ice Cream Sandwich (android) is making steady progress, alpha version already out
-Active user and homebrew community is ready and willing to help

Cons:
-The aforementioned limited app selection
-WebOS web browser is at best difficult, often frustrating
-No SD card slot

If you're looking for a premium tablet with top flight functionality, the Touchpad isn't for you. If you're looking for a good value that becomes better with a bit of work and research, consider this tablet.

I started out with a 16gb for movies, but found I could only get 2 or 3 movies on it. Mind you, I don't keep music on my TP. So I got a 32gb and have plenty of room for movies now.

I don't think he's that lucky... you are buying into a statistical fallacy here. People love to barf their frustrations all over the Internet when something goes wrong, but not so much when everything's ok. A relative handful of people complain about an issue and you assume it's widespread because the other hundreds of thousands of people aren't posting about how their USB port works as designed.
