Wow, Mercola? Seriously, that is the source you're going with? The same guy who recommends high amounts of saturated fat in your diet? The same Pinky who thinks that microwave ovens somehow alter the chemistry of food? The guy who claims HIV doesn't cause AIDS?

Not really, not exactly the same item but very similar from manufacturer's website for $30:

Putting aside the fact that mercola.com is probably the least credible health site on the web, I decided to go search his site, and see what his claims regarding corn syrup are. The only one that showed up was that it's linked to diabetes (along with all refined carbohydrates, including table sugar). That's not exactly a breaking revelation, and far from calling it a poison.

What's more, the reason he says that HFCS is so bad, is because he claims that fructose is bad for you. Since almost all the sugar in corn syrup is glucose, that's obviously not an issue.

So, not only did you cite a questionable (at best) source, but that source doesn't even back up your claim!

Thanks for that line. I look forward to using it!

I adore these salted chocolate caramels. When I ran out of them, I turned to Amazon, found a vendor with decent reviews and paid $30 for 1/2 the amount and, as it would happen, half the taste. I then went to Candy Basket to order and just couldn't justify getting a few pieces for $10 plus shipping. Then I went to the Sam's Club website. They had some sea salt caramels from Candy House at a price similar to the ones offered here. They arrived and were ok, but had a fruity taste to them and were on the hard side. I made a half hearted effort looking at vendors from Etsy but again, the price was exorbitant.

All that to say this: $28 for several pounds of Fleur de Sel Chocolate Covered Caramels is a bargain. I now know why people said they were sorry they had only bought 1 in the past, because that was me.

You people are bad, baad influences. I was so convinced that I was skipping this Woot, particularly as I recently ordered chocolates from a Wine Woot. I should have avoided reading the comments, but, alas, I'm a sucker -- I may just be in for TWO! I'm also hungry right now, so that doesn't help in the willpower department ... then there's the whole Valentine's Day justification. The boyfriend wasn't always into sweets, but lately he hasn't met a chocolate that he didn't like.

Soley based on the comments - in for 3. $75+ for chocolate?!?

These better be life altering chocolate!

Okay, I bought the damn chocolate. 2 of them. Now I have to eat it all in one sitting. Just saw a commercial for 30th anniversary of ET!!

30 years!! Damn, I'm old. Guess I better open a new account to buy more chocolate..

Resisted as long as I could... in for 2. Really didn't want to spend this much on chocolate this week, but I was kicking myself last time for passing them up. The dark are heavenly & husband likes the milk. They are worth it.

Regardless of whether corn syrup is bad for you, it definitely tastes worse than actual sugar.

I don't quite think you've got it either. It says a serving is 2 pieces, and that there are 120 calories in a serving. Wouldn't that make them 60 calories a piece?

I bit the bullet and ordered two. Usually, I hem and haw until something's sold out.

As someone who has made caramels from scratch in the past, the corn syrup is used to keep the sugar from seizing up and becoming hard like toffee candy. You don't need much, and it's not the same thing as high fructose corn syrup anyway.

Kuragari wrote:Regardless of whether corn syrup is bad for you, it definitely tastes worse than actual sugar.

Corn syrup is most likely not used primarily as a sweetener here, but for its anti-crystalline properties. Regular corn syrup (as opposed to high fructose corn syrup) is not as effective as a sweetener as sucrose or fructose as it it high in glucose which doesn't taste nearly as sweet on the tongue as either of the other two. It will, on the other hand, come between sucrose (table sugar) molecules and prevent or at least impede crystal formation. This allows the Chocolatier to achieve a nice smooth texture while still using the subjectively better tasting sucrose for sweetness.

It is used to strike a balance between taste and texture. They could have used HFCS and ended up with a very smooth, very sweet candy that didn't taste as good. They could have used only regular corn syrup and created a very smooth, but less sweet and tasty caramel. They could have used only table sugar, and risked a tasty confection that had an unappealing grainy texture. Instead they use a combination to achieve the best of both worlds.

Also, for the "fructose is the devil" crowd: fructose is primarily a fruit sugar, so if you truly believe it is bad for you, stop eating apples, bananas, etc immediately. The life you save could be your own! The rest of us will feel free to ignore the alarmist propaganda.

Just received my (well, *her*) chocolates. This is the fastest I've ever received a delivery from Woot. Ironically, it's the one time that I wish Woot would have taken longer to deliver the goods. Now I have to look at them for 11 days before giving them to her to enjoy.

Think they are coming directly from Candy Basket.

Just received my tracking number. Said it shipped on 1/30... So, wait... These chocolates time travel?

My order of two-sies boxes is on the way.

I am so sad.

I live in the very same city as Woot. Why, that warehouse is just 2 miles away. When I woot and buy, there have been times when I got a delivery in two days. Sometimes the processing of the order takes a little while, and it might be a few days before I get the message saying the order is ready to ship, and there is a tracking number. But, sometimes I have found a box at my front door before I discovered that I had the email telling me it was coming.

But this time... It's coming from somewhere far away. And I have to wait 4 more days.

Just like all the poor sods that don't live in the same city as Woot lives.

Hopefully I will be given and the gentle support from all you wooters out there that I deserve.
