I can't comment on the actual quality of the Samsung trackpad. What I can tell you is it seemed to always be getting in the way when typing. With the trackpad being so large, my hands were constantly coming in contact and moving my cursor in different areas... it was really a pain. My wife ultimately chose the Dell XPS 14 over the Samsung because in her words, "It fits my bag better." Not the best way to choose a laptop but she is very happy with the Dell.

Can somebody tell me if there is any big difference between this deal and the Toshiba I just bought on Monday featured here? :

http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/8af7d0f1-506d-4487-88f1-e6c7bb5c7b14/toshiba-p755-satellite-intel-core-i3-laptop-w-15-6-hd-led-display-6gb-ddr3-64#6

Both refurbished, both equipped with similar memory and hard drive... I am thinking that the one I bought for $379 was a much better deal.

I got in on that deal too. Backlit keyboard was the clincher, although still a good deal without.

It has a beefier graphics card and bluray, and the processor is just as capable (2630QM). The screen may not be as flashy, but mine is hooked up to a monitor anyway.

I second that! I got the same RC512, and it's great. (At first I thought that's what this ad was for!) I went ahead and upgraded the memory, and got a faster pair while I was at it. This is a great VM host, so I can do software testing on any platform while at a coffeeshop. The drive is the slowest part of the system, but is still good enough for now that I'm not going to bother getting something else.

These machines have a hybrid UEFI/BIOS. If you don't know what this means, then don't worry about it. If you do, you'll be disappointed if you try to use it. The Linux kernel will fail to load, and you'll be stuck with a Windows only boot manager, or set the machine up for BIOS only mode. (I was able to get MacOS to work on it, but killed it after allowing it to "upgrade" to a newer release. =)

I am not a fan of Apple simply because of the price and the attitude, but I must admit I'm addicted to being able to do almost everything on the trackpad with one hand.

Yes, I know that's actually three questions.
Layoff already.

Why does it matter if you can do everything with one hand--nevermind.

I too purchased the RC512 a few months ago. I had to turn it over to the repair center, but they got it back to me in a couple of weeks in perfect condition. After upgrading the memory, the thing is a monster, powering through everything I can throw at it without even breathing hard.

I like the sleek styling of this one better than the RC512, but the video card would be a deal breaker. You can run most games with the card, but with only 512mb of memory you can't max graphics and your computer will work harder (heat up).

BTW, I installed a 500gb 7200rpm hard drive on mine and had no noticeable performance improvement.

I got this computer last time it was up on Woot. Actually, my native resolution is 1366x768, so this one has a little finer resolution. I absolutely love it. I was a little worried about the refurb aspect, but the only problem I've had was with Windows Update, and that was solved in two days with an email to Microsoft (their customer support is really good now, btw).

It's fast enough to play modern games on about mid-to-high level settings, which makes this an amazing bang for your buck, considering it's a laptop. The battery has great life, and the BatteryLifeExtender app that comes installed makes it last even longer (in terms of years, not operating hours, mind you), and I don't have to worry about forgetting my comptuer's on while it's plugged in - I can just switch it to charge up to 80%. Then, when I know I'm about to be portable, I switch back to 100%.

My only complaint is that the built-in microphone is next to the keyboard, so I tend to put my hand on it while chatting and typing. Some Skype partners have complained about that. Other than that, though, this is by far the best deal I have ever received for a computer purchase in my life. 5/5.

If the trackpad gets in the way while typing, you can turn it on and off by pushing Fn+F10. It works great, and actually handles a couple multi-touch gestures (zoom in, zoom out, rotate clockwise, rotate counterclockwise, scroll up and down, scroll left and right)!

Turning the trackpad on and off every time you type is a major pain. IMO this trackpad is too large and really gets in the way.

Today's woot is an i7 and you bought an i3.
Yours probably uses Intel HD graphics and has a screen resolution of 1366x768, judging from the Toshiba website. It's also heavier and a little bigger.

Writing off taxes doesn't mean saving money, it means recouping some loss/operating expense.

It is a capital investment. The extra cost is usually associated with the extended support plan that covers the duration of the capital expense (expense amortized over 2-5 years, so the unit really should be warrantied for that entire duration).

Plus, the usual spare power supply, battery, docking station, and other add-ons that are required for a laptop in a work environment add up quick as well.

I have a question about the keyboard. Currently, I have a 17 inch screen with a keyboard that does not have a numpad. I can't imagine how small this keyboard is if it has a numpad on a 15.6" computer. I have normal, man-sized hands and I'm wondering if anyone who owns this kind of configuration has run into any problems?

The keyboard is a full sized keyboard. If your 17" doesn't have a tenkey then the arrangement of the keyboard just isn't as efficient as the 15" models. Sometimes they'll shrink the size of the numbers down, but the actual keyboard part will always be full size unless it's a netbook.

Can the keyboard be swapped with a backlit one? Anyone know if it can be ordered from Samsung?

I've been debating pulling the trigger on this one all day, just afraid I'll miss my backlit keyboard too much. If it could be swapped out for $40 or so it's a done deal.

This difference is that this laptop doesn't just have built in Intel graphics, but also a dedicated GPU;A AMD Radeon 6490M but your Toshiba does not.
Also the resolution on that Toshiba laptop is only 1366x768 whereas this one on w00t today is 1600x900.

No, it's not an identical model. That link is a laptop with a 1366x768 resolution whereas the laptop on woot is 1600x900. Also, on your link the laptop doesn't have a dedicated GPU, the one on woot does.
Also, that laptop has a 500GB drive, this laptop on woot is 750GB.

Also, the laptop in your link comes with 4GB of RAM, the laptop on woot today comes with 6GB.

Identical, really?

tkebidder wrote:only use an i7? blah I got the i9 and won't go back

I would say that in order to be fair, the Intel Core i9 chip six core is better compared to the i7 when you look at specific tasks:

"The i9 doesn't extract significant advantages from its pumped core count (which brings processing thread count up to 12) in a lot of day to day tasks, so don't expect to see an increase in game performance, Windows startup speed or other single-core optimized tasks. It's when you start rendering video or doing 3D modeling—tasks that are suited to parallelization—that the i9 flexes its muscles."

Check out the article for yourself at:
Gizmodo.com

I think for most users the i7 is more than fine, but if you got the cash, and the time to wait for a deal on a machine that has a i9; go for it.
