My daughter has this model (620) and I have the earlier model (600). The biggest functional difference between the two is this one doesn't have a subwoofer jack out but is functionally more elegant in other ways with the IPOD interface. When you first listen to it, you don't think it needs a subwoof, sound is very good but if you hook a subwoof up, sound improvement is very noticeable. These do get loud, I used mine at a St Patrick's party tonight (indoors) with over 50 people and kept the volume less than half of total. Reviews I read before buying compared very favorably to the Bose and Bosch at much less cost, even before the Woot deal. Having rechargeable li-ion battery is great, maybe it's best feature. When working in yard or car, just grab and go and don't worry about replacing C cells. Battery is also replaceable if/when it wears out but GF has had hers (600) for over 3 years. Having radio is nice for NPR or sports broadcasts. I connect my 30GB and 8GB nano directly and daughter uses aux port for her IPhone 3. Since my IPODs use different bases (about 5 included), I just leave the base off. As the 600 is no longer being made, I see they sell for $300 now, bought mine at Costco for $100. I fully recommend the 620 at list price, this is a steal.

No problem with any of the older rectangular nanos. Don't have experience with the new square one but should be fine.

Don't do it. I recently bought an Altec Lansing iPhone speaker from a close out and it stopped working after the last iPhone software update. All I can get out of Altec is an email saying they are working on it, and that was a month ago.

Got this for my daughter for Xmas. Reasons I chose it:
> very reasonable price
> it beat the heck out of the $5 buck toy speakers she was using
> it had rechargeable batteries vs the toy one that seemed like it needed new batteries weekly
> very portable (can set on a small bathroom counter)
> it has FM radio.
Only thing I did not take into account was what was most important to my daughter at this stage -- clear, LOUD sound.

A week after Xmas, the JBL On Stage IIIP went on sale at Target, so got that and we did a side by side sound comparison.
Given the power difference (and speaker capacity), it was not a contest - JBL has remarkable bang for the buck sound....and the JBL lost on every other important criteria...um, I mean my important criteria. Per usual, at my daughters age (18), my persuasive techniques are near zero, so she is now very happy with the JBL (although the JBL is plug in only, so it will not consume batteries.

Not many models has all this one has at this price point, and is a quality product for what it is -- highly recommend.

I have one of these from a woot about a year and a half ago. I use it outside while working in the yard, use it at the beach. Still going strong.

Has great sound. Not sure how much I paid for it, though.

Quality product, IMHO.

Last time I bought one of these, it wouldn't reliably play an iPhone 4. I called them and they were confused why I didn't know I needed to purchase a 'free-just pay for shipping' adapter. I returned the unit instead.

But you can still plug a cord into the aux in to play it. I wonder if there is or will be any firmware fix for your unit...or any others with the same problem. Doesn't Apple concern itself with the hardware makers out there?

Bought one of the previous generations of this item and the sound output was great but sadly the dock connector stopped working about 4 months into ownership. Tried working with Altec to get it fixed/replaced but their customer service is not so good...

The reviews on Amazon look pretty good and the price is not bad either.

Yes, me too. I have been waiting a long time for this. Thanks

I had one if these, not sure which model. It was rather lightweight, so the bass didn't rattle the roof, but it had nice clean sound and was totally worth what I paid. The batteries lasted for about 5-7 hours at normal volume. And it folded flat so it wss a lot easier to pack in a suitcase than other docks ive owned. Id still be using it but my kid broke it. Def worth 55$.

pretty sure this is the same thing (but Woot is silver and the walmart one is black, hence the different product number):

Cheaper at walmart even with tax.

I got this the last time it was on here. Use it a lot at work. Decent sound quality and plenty of volume. I have to hit the on button a few times to get it to work, but other than that it is a good box. I am going to get this one for my wife.

The only difference that I can see is the 520 doesn't have a radio. No big deal though.

LOVE this thing! and $50 is a great price, we have one for our bathroom that we haul around the house, outside and travel with it. The sound quality is great, much better than the more expensive--but similar--Pioneer speaker dock. Bought one for my sis for Xmas, and she loves it too.

Pros:
-Works with our iPhone 4s (but we get the 'non charging compatibility' message on the iPhone when we use it--but still plays/works great!)
-Dock is large enough that we don't have to remove our cases
-Really great sound--like a boom box (gets quite loud, but doesn't have that 'full sound' that comes with surround sound/subs, if that's what you want)
-Portable, small--folds right up
-Aux jack in back for iPad
-Radio

Cons:
-Charge is only a few hours (3-4 w/iPhone)
-Compatibility message

I would/will buy another one in a heartbeat.

I bought one last time through. I use it all of the time - indoors and outdoors. The rechargeable battery and the tuck-away remote are the deal makers. It stays by my bedside and is my primary iPhone charging dock.

I also bought the Pioneer, white, dual-docking unit a few months ago. The Pioneer sounds better and the bluetooth on it is a nice feature, but the Altec gets 5 times the use because of the battery.

Buy with confidence, especially at $55.

We have owned one of these for over a year. It's been an excellent set of speakers for the kitchen. The sound quality is very good for the price. It isn't a top of the line but I can't imagine you can find better sound for $50.

My teenagers drag this around the house and outside on the deck, the unit is not overly fragile and the battery is excellent.

I Wooted a recent Altec portable iPod dock for twice the price of this. With this you'll get what you pay for: an inexpensive player with the merits of ease of use, portability, decent treble, but no discernible bass ummph. It'll be fine for what it is.

Most likely. It has a standard iDevice dock adapter hole, so as long as you take it out of that, there should be plenty of room. I have my iPhone 4s in a bumper, and it fits just fine without the adapter in.

I bought this from Woot a year ago (black one) and I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I'm an avid rock climber and boulderer and take this with me outside all the time. It's not too heavy, takes a good beating and the rechargeable batteries last a pretty long time. I use it with a Nano and at a reasonable volume, I can get about 4-5 hours. Great at the campsite too. At home, I keep it in the kitchen which also makes for a handy charging/music station for my Iphone 4 which I stream Spotify on. My exact model goes for $150 + tax at Best Buy so this is a real good deal.

This unit works on 7.5 VDC. If you hook it directly to your car power( 13.5 VDC typical) you will burn it up. But you can get a CLA (Car lighter DC to DC adapter) to drop the voltage to 7.5 VDC and be in busines.
Not sure how well the radio would work inside the car as there is no external antenna connection. Also, you might pick up noise and static from the charging system and electronics in your car. Most quality car radios have proper sheilding to prevent engine noise from being detected on them.

This is a very good product and great value. I have had one for my office for about a year now, and I love it. Audio quality is surprisingly acceptable, with decent highs and pretty good bass. Really solid build - you can tell it just works as compared to some of the low-end crud that's out there.

Very happy with mine. Grabbed this from another deal a day site about 2 months ago. Works like a charm. Charges my 4s quickly, w/o issue. Plays Pandora, Spotify, RadioParadise, etc, or you can play what's internal in memory. No GMS sound, so the shielding is good.
Haven't used it on battery power, and I have read of issues with the unit timing out and going to sleep while streaming some services when on battery. I haven't had that problem, but I haven't tried the battery either.
Sound is rich, full and very good for the size.
It's about a foot long and stand about 4" high. Speakers are small, but put out solid sound.
Great item and a good price.
