Could this have been used in someones house ?

Yes. It was probably bought at the store and taken to someone's home. Once arriving at their home, there could have been an issue that needed repaired. Someone sent it back to Dyson for repairs. Could have been something major, or something minor. Either way, it was repaired to original and sometimes better equipment. I bought a refurbished Dyson from woot 3 years ago. I love it and not one problem with it.

Skunkmonkey wrote:I'm just curious. If Dyson products are so well-engineered and don't lose suction and all that, why are there so many refurbs? Though many people speak very highly of Dyson produts, I'm leery to jump because it appears that a great deal of them get sent back.

Has anyone ever had to return a Dyson? If so, what for, so that we might know why many of these are refurbished.

A lot of refurbs are items that were returned due to buyer's remorse. In the case of a Dyson, someone comes home to find their significant other bought it and freaks out, "You spent six hundred dollars on a freaking VACUUM? Take it BACK!"

Does the brush have it's own motor, or is it pneumatically driven (with vacuum air)?

Or is that an "animal" model only feature?

Proud to say, "Yes, Wooters! I bought one in September of 2007."

It's still going strong. Love it on carpeting. Hate it on bare floors, but the Roomba loves bare floors, so I am good.

My "pet issue" is feather dust from my parrots. Dyson loves it.

I bought a refurbished Dyson from Woot 3 years ago. It is the best vacuum I have ever used and have had no problems with it.

Well, BuyHappier.com (linked from the bottom of Woot's page) has this model "recertified" for $329. Makes $254.99 seem pretty good.

I found THIS one. Though I like mywoot.net better because it has more functionality, hopefully it's back up soon.

Refurb just means that they already found and fixed the problem that you would have run into with a new one. And the price is much better!

Just thinkin... you think a company ever finds itself short on sales and wants to drop the price temporarily to move some inventory, but can't because it is under contract with the Big Box retailers it deals with to not sell to competitors for a lower price? So they take a bunch of new inventory, label it as refurb, then undercut their contracts.

Not sayin it happens and I don't have any proof or reason to think it happens. But it would explain the large number of refurbs that some companies seem to have. Just sayin.

Buy at least one and you are guaranteed to have a ball.

If you are a guy, buy 3, then you can brag to everyone that you have 3 balls.

I've had a refurbed Dyson Animal since 2004. It's amazing, it comes apart easily for emptying and cleaning and given the number of times it's been taken apart to clean I'm amazed that none of the plastic parts have broken. Still going strong.

ScoopLV wrote:My guess is that nogoodniks buy them from places like Costco, vacuum their house, then return them. Some stores have very lax return policies, and mouthbreathers have learned they can game the policy as a kind of appliance rental.

I liked my DC25 so much I bought another here for my mother-in-law. She likes it, too.

Or, could easily be that people send WAY too much believing the "hype" and that's why they return it because they realize the $120 vacuum works just as good or only so slightly less that the 3 or $400 savings is the way to go!

A majority of them are stuck on the Sanyo (check it out first) however, like I said earlier this one is working and is more accurate because it does full percentage points instead of 10% at a time.

Washable filters and a bagless vacuum are the way to go...kinda disheartening to look in the container and see how much dust and filth find their way into the house, but it beats paying hundreds a year on flimsy filters and bags

This is discussed every time a refurb'd vacuum comes up. Typically these are returns, possible floor models or demo units. Slightly used, but opened so they cannot be resold in the stores. So the store sells them back to a company to be refurb'd. These will be like or close to new.

We Bought a refurb'd Eureka from woot! last year and it is still going strong. The belt finally broke just last week, but it is ok because the original packaging came with an extra (just like the brand new ones)

altschul

quality posts: 3 Private Messages altschul

We bought this the last time it was on Woot. Thus haven't had it very long and can't comment on the durability/longevity. But, I am really glad I got it.

It isn't extremely loud, it has very good suction (it has eaten two socks), and it is very maneuverable. (The ball thing actually took a little getting used to, since most vacuum cleaners can't do that, but now I can navigate around things like crazy.) The canister is easy to remove and empty (I have easily salvaged the two socks, and multiple Legos). My only dislike is the wand/hose, which took a while to figure out how to use (until I read the easy-to-comprehend manual and went "oh duh") and isn't quite as flexible as I'd like for really getting into corners.

But overall this is a really nicely designed vacuum cleaner and as long as all the clips and things don't break, I expect to be cheerfully using it for a long time to come.

Ten items sold in eleven hours. I continue to be unimpressed by AmaWoot. I'm sure glad I decided at 1:02 AM to sleep through this one.

Maybe I'll check in later just for laughs. Surely there's something better to do... like a good dump.
